The Singh-Ray 77mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter - This neutral density filter gives you the capability to use fast film in bright sunlight. ND filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters reduce the amount of light reaching the film.

When used with a digital camera, you can effectively see how this filter works. After the initial exposure, you can check your LCD image and then make whatever change in exposure you feel you need to enhance your image. By rotating the ring, you can either increase or decrease the ND effect. This will be especially useful when trying to achieve "blurred" or "panned" shots.

The filter contains "index" points to help you mark your spot. They do not represent actual ND settings , i.e. non-calibrated - but are there to help you re-set your filter when you wish to recreate the effect.

Note! Singh-Ray cannot predict when vignetting may occur - especially with very wide angle lenses. To avoid vignetting, adjust your focal length, position, and/or composition to remove the vignetting - use your digital camera's display for reference.

Front ring can accept a Mor-Slo 5-stop Solid ND Filter or a Cokin holder for ND Grad Filters 1
Front Min/Max density ring lets you adjust density from 2-2/3 to 8 f/stops

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

There are times you want to shoot the frame with f/5.6 + ISO100 + 1/30 sec outdoors in the middle of the day. So that you want to use the maximum sharpness out of your lens, very low noise due to ISO100 and the motion blur of 1/30 sec exposure. To do that you either have to carry the whole set of ND filters or simply the Singhray variND filter. It is best to use this filter with wide angle lenses having 52 to 67mm filter threads and step-up-rings to avoid the vingetting due to the thickness of the filter.

Comments about Singh-Ray 77mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

I'm a Pro scenic landscape-nature and travel photographer. I'm often confronted with a situation where an ND filter is necessary to create an artistic touch for a marketable print. Before the Vari-ND filter I may have found myself composing with the tripod on wet slippery rocks photographing a waterfall or river scene. I would need to compose, focus and then find a way to install either an ND6 or ND10 without sliding into the river or worse dropping an expensive filter. Those days are now over! I can set up, compose and focus with the Singh-Ray vari ND in place while on the lightest setting and simply adjust the filter like a Circular Polarizer.

This is a must have for any serious fine art landscape photographer. I use this whenever I shoot in broad daylight. A great tool to slow your shutter speed and give more drama to an image. The best part about it is how you can dial the amount of light you want to capture.

Comments about Singh-Ray 77mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

I bought this filter to add a new dimension to my photography by allowing me to use longer shutter openings to show movement of certain elements in my images. It works well because the user can set the filter to MIN for composition and focusing, then rotate to darker for exposure. The user must use the histogram to determine the proper exposure since the camera's light meter most likely will not indicate correctly. Shooting in full manual is best, of course.

Comments about Singh-Ray 77mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

This "set" of filters is great for travel photography and for anyone trying to lighten their load. The initial investment is a bit steep, but compared to buying all the filters this one does, it's a good value.

I used mine for the first time last week for mid-day photography on a Mexican beach and was able to slow my shutter to 15 seconds! Yes, at midday!

I added a split neutral density filter and got some great shots, but also some garbage. You must be careful about how light strikes the front of filters - especially stacked filters.

Because this set is thick, it may cause vignetting on wide angle lenses - it does with my Nikkor 17-55mm, f/2.8.

It's a great addition to my bag and I recommend it!

Debated on spending this much money for a filter for over a year....finally broke down and bought it.....DO NOT REGRET spending the moolah at all!!!
NOW, I can take portraits (in studio or outside) and keep an aperture that's desirable...for shallow depth of field.
Doing shoots in bright sunlight can be a real challenge concerning the wide f-stop but this filter takes care of that.
PLUS, it takes the place of several ND filters...NICE!!!!

This one filter replaced multiple filters that would be needed to do the same as what this can do. The image quality is very sharp and the color is 100% accurate. This is great for shooting anything where you need to slow your shutter speed down. I just did a shoot of some waterfalls in Alabama and the shots look like they came right out of a National Geographic magazine. Take a look at the below link, photos numbered from 31-35 are all taken using this filter. I can't wait to go shoot more waterfalls.[@]

I mainly use it for flash sync in bright sun at big f stop

Comments about Singh-Ray 77mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

A great filter specially for DSLR cameras. You can dial the amount of ND with rotation of the front as in polarizer filter. Excellent for out door use, so you don't have to use different ND filters. One unite replaces all my ND filters. I just wished they would make it with a bit more friction on rotation so it would eliminate the accidental turn.

I bought this filter to use it with my 20mm lens on FF, but it just produces the worst vignetting i have ever seen. Step-up ring from 62mm to 77mm didn't help at all. I hope i can sell this one and go for the thin one. what a disappointment.

I bought one and broke it trying to clean Gunk off the brand new lens. [...] Singh Ray wouldn't give my money back but said they would fix the Vari-ND for $280. Great product but bad customer relations. There was uncured chemicals on the lens [...]. But it is a great product even though they charge so much and do nothing for you when their product is defective!

Comments about Singh-Ray 77mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

I purchased this filter after a professional photographer, who's blog I follow, reviewed and recommended it. Also, I planned a trip to Yellowstone, and I thought this would extend my range of image possibilities with the sunny, clear weather that was forecasted. The filter was very easy to use, obviously well made, with clear optics. Vignetting occurs at wide focal lengths; I adjusted my compositions for cropping in post.
