This is an Interfit SGM500 Flex Mount for the Vivitar 285HV on-camera flash. It is an integral part of the Strobies series of flash light shapers.
There are several light shapers that work with the Flex Mount. A Snoot, Barndoor Set, Softbox, Honeycomb Grids, and Bounce Cards are available separately.
The Flex Mount is correctly fitted when your flash cannot be pushed any further inside it and is flush with the central hole.

Comments about Interfit SGM500 Flex Mount for the Vivitar 285HV:
Attached pretty well to the Vivitar 285, but it is just a friction fit. As long as it is mounted on a light stand it work OK but it can work its way off if you are moving the flash a lot.

Comments about Interfit SGM500 Flex Mount for the Vivitar 285HV:
I purchased two of these. This is required for Interfit softboxes, octobox, snoot, etc. It didn't come with any instructions. Works great. Fits on the flash head snug and I haven't had any problems with it yet.

Comments about Interfit SGM500 Flex Mount for the Vivitar 285HV:
I use it with the globe diffuser attachment which works well. Does have a tendency to come loose if not careful. A little gaffer tape will make sure it doesn't go anywhere.

Comments about Interfit SGM500 Flex Mount for the Vivitar 285HV:
Honestly, I thought it was very easy to get on. It's snug, but you want it to be. It's also easy to take off. I havent had any issues with it at all. All the attachments I've ordered fit on perfectly.

Comments about Interfit SGM500 Flex Mount for the Vivitar 285HV:
I bought this adaptor in conjunction with other Strobist accessories, and a pair of Vivitar 285HV Flash Heads. The adaptor is a little tough to get onto the Vivitar head, and once it's on, it's not a tight fit and falls off fairly easily! Not a big problem for locked-down studio work, but annoying that a small movement or adjustment can often cause the adaptor to fall off, bringing the Snoot or Barn Door assembly with it.
