This is my first experience with the Pentax system. I actually made the switch over from Nikon to Pentax. In this review I will be comparing the K7 with my previous camera body which was a Nikon D700. I know there is a huge difference in price and maybe target consumer, but it's what I am basing the review on.
Size: This is one area of reason that I made the switch over to Pentax, the D700 was just too hefty and I wanted something that felt more mobile. The K7 achieved this. It is a great sized body. I was also drawn to the fact that it has a magnesium body which the D700 has. The K7 does not feel as solid as the Nikon, but it is much more solid then Pentaxs' other offerings IE the K100 which I picked up as a spare when I got the K7. Overall great body.
Image quality: The K7 is not as great in the image department as the D700, but it is not expected to be. The image quality is great for this level of body and sensor. Noise is noticable starting at around 800 ISO. At 3200 ISO the noise is at a point where I personally would not want to shoot an image.
Buttons: Everything is laid out well and is intutive. I prefer the ease of menu access on the Pentax over the D700. Pentax really knows how to increase the ease of using the camera. Although some of the buttons and switches do feel a bit plasticky for my tastes.
Rear LCD: This is as beautiful a screen as the one on the D700, right now I don't think you can find a better screen.
Menus and Options: Here is where the Pentax really shines compared to Nikon. Thier options nagivation is by far easier to figure out and work your way though. I partically like the screen you can access from the info button which allows swift changing of common options. Pentax has created a very intuitive system and it is a pleasure to use.
Overall this is a great camera. I gave it four stars because of the ISO performace. My expectations might be too high coming from the full frame D700, but still I wish high ISO noise was better managed.

I was happy with the camera but in the year and a half I have owned it I sent it in because it was draining batteries in about 3 days while turned off(under warrantee). Now it's in for electronic level off level, verticle white lines through all my photos, raw button falls off and suddenly not accepting the SD card that is already in the camera and has photos on it. Fortunately when I got it it came with a free two year extended warrantee. I'm just glad I only bought 2 lenses.

This camera would have been almost perfect but Pentax spoiled the deal by choosing Samsung`s lousy sensor. Just too noisy, therefore, make yourself a favor and go for the K5.

Comments about Pentax K-7 SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
two years ago now i bought this to replace my old canon body. while there have been a few issues getting used to the new lay out and body, i have been absolutely delighted with its performance. my parents shoot higher end and more expensive pro level canon bodies and were jealous of its performance. the body is very sturdy and while it is much smaller than my previous camera body, it has a much more solid feel to it which i found impressive. my biggest complaint has been the manufaturer's selection of lenses to choose from. pentax's own selection seems quite limited. i would deffinately recommend branching out to see what other companies have to offer. currently i mostly use a SIGMA f/2.8 28-70 and Zeiss f1.4 50 and have had stellar pictures even when mounted with a cheaper kenko 1.5x ring. other wise, it seems as if the white balancing program favors white background in high glare such as snow back-drops. a polarizer would likely help to remedy this minor issue, however. shutter speed is very responsive, but i would recommend favoring manual focus on fast moving targets. i favor landscape photography, however, and find this to be a literal delight to use and highly recommend it. if you are looking for a mid range digital camera that is competitive with more expensive nikons or canons without paying the 1000+ price tag then this is deffinately the way to go.

Absolutely loving it!!! Very user friendly, pictures are crystal clear. Use it for macro photography too and the shake reduction really helps to keep the images sharp. Shutter speed is fast. Accepts all my lenses from my old SLR. Even tried the video capabilities and those turned out great too.
A little heavier than I expected and a little bigger than the old SLR but you get used to that quickly.

Comments about Pentax K-7 SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
I am using the camera for family and travel photography and purchased it because of backward compatibility with Pentax lenses, a good experience with the K-x model and because I wanted a robustly built camera that was weatherproof. It is easy to handle, a nice compact size for a DSLR and appears to be well made. Like all DSLRs it takes a while to learn how to use it properly and is complex.

Primary uses of the camera are landscape and wildlife photography. Favorite lenses are the Pentax 35-80 and 70-300 zoom lenses. The camera responds well to contasts such as snowfields and lower slopes, and does well in low light conditions.

Comments about Pentax K-7 SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
I have been using Pentax digital cameras for 5 years now. I have own and use a Pentax *ist DL, K-x, two K-200D's and now a K-7. I have enjoyed every Pentax camera I have, but the K-7 is truly an artist's camera. Removed of superfluous gimmicks, the K-7 is incredibly versatile and with configurable options and architecture for getting exactly the shot you want. The pictures, especially compared to Canon and Nikon are much sharper, are accepted and edited will in Aperture in RAW format and produce excellent prints and other digital media. The video is excellent and in many ways surpasses other DSLR video I have seen. As with many, it is less than idea in very low light, but does competitively well. The battery grip by Pentax is overpriced in my opinion but still a good option and makes the camera much more ergonomic for the grip. Consider a third party battery grip of good quality. Haven't found anything that is remotely a functional or performance deal breaker with this camera. Great quality build and body, great functionality and superior images. instantly my favorite camera to use.

Comments about Pentax K-7 SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
It's been a year I used this excellent camera! I've only used Canon DSLRs for jobs but I wanted to have one that's small and compact yet built with professional quality(mainly for travel). I was totally new to Pentax DSLR cameras and lenses...but geez...they are just amazing!!! I'm highly impressed with Pentax DSLRs and lenses, which insists me to get another Pentax DSLR recently; K-5! I agree that K-7 has somewhat high noise compare to other competitive models but strangely I'm enjoying its "film like" noise/grain! (It's not that smudging noise it more like crisp film grain like noise) Setting ISO at around 1250-1600 and make them BW image gives that nostalgic BW ISO 400 film images! As K-7 and K-5 use totally different sensors, it's like having two complete different cameras. Sure K-5 has better Dynamic Range with better ISO. However like I said, K-7 and K-5 is rather a different camera not just an upgrade and this is the reason why I'm keep both K-7 and K-5. I love them both! One thing that's for sure...is that at the current price of K-7...you can't go wrong, it's the best choice.

Comments about Pentax K-7 SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
This is a great camera! It's size is fantastic, not to big, not too small, and with the optional battery grip is quite a camera! It's weather sealed magnesium body feels very solid, the buttons and wheels are very intuitive and easy to use. The menu system is far easier to understand than any of the other major brands, and there are so many options for the user to explore that I have not found myself even once wishing for another feature. It works fantastic with all of my legacy Pentax lenses, some over 40 years old! And with Pentax's in camera image stabilization, all lenses are stabilized! The top LCD and big viewfinder are both very useful, and LiveView is available as well. Battery life is quite acceptable. I have gone up to ISO 800 with no noticeable noise in the photos, and the video, while not 1080p, is still very usable at 720p. I would recommend this camera to anyone who wants a pro level APS-C camera for a more than reasonable price.

I bought just the body and used my lenses from my K10d. Hung my Sigma 17-70 on it and am thoroughly pleased. Pics are sharp and I'm pleased. Like the feel. Lighter than the K10d and as easy to use. Only thing I won't use is the live view. Just don't like using it on any camera. Give me the view finder.

I bought the camera as a gift--I didn't think to ensure there was a memory card in it. A little disappointed that he couldn't use it right away.
Even so, the gift had it's desired effect--he was pretty emotional at receiving it.
He has since sent me some beautiful pictures:-)

Comments about Pentax K-7 SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
This camera is way more complex than necessary. There are so many features that access to them becomes overly complicated and laborious. Primary functions such as manually setting shutter speed or aperature should not require having to surf through various interdependant lists and pages and committing the process to memory. I miss my Ricoh KR-5! If only they would build a simple camera like it with a large digital sensor. I have the feeling that I paid a lot of money for a lot of features that I could never possibly use. Is the camera malfunctioning or did I mix up some setting somewhere way back on one of those pages that I can't remember how to get back to?

Comments about Pentax K-7 SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
The camera is feature rich, ergonomically dreamy, the LCD screen is exceptionally vivid, and the shake reduction particularly effective. What sold me on this camera is the Pentax Hyper Program Mode, which I had thoroughly enjoyed on my old PZ1P. The quality and power of the pop up flash is an unexpected surprise. Only drawback I can see is the clunky, fiddly Live View mode, which is not a problem since I use the excellent viewfinder instead.

I recently purchased the K-7 to replace my K200 that was a few years old. While a big improvement over my old camera body, images are still noisy at high ISO. Other than that, I feel that this is a good product for the price. Other improvements include faster auto-focusing and a better image quality. LOVE the rechargeable battery that comes with it but I would recommend getting a back up battery just in case.
