The waterproof & dustproof Pentax Optio W60 Digital Camera (Copper) is designed to operate at depths of up to 13 feet underwater and can operate at extreme temperatures well below freezing. A perfect camera for the outdoor adventurer as well as the everyday camera user, it incorporates a 5x optical zoom refraction lens that never protrudes from the camera body, yet it provides wide-angle shooting capability with a focal length of 5 to 25mm (approximately 28 - 140mm equivalent in 35mm format). In addition, a Digital Wide function provides an equivalent focal length of 21mm.
The camera can record still images at a resolution of up to 10 Megapixels with superb image quality and color rendering, plus the camera has a host of scene modes ideal for shooting scenes such as expansive landscapes, architecture, and group photos in confined spaces as well as close-up telephoto shots. Other features of the Optio W60 include a High-Quality Movie mode with HD resolution comparable to 720p HDTV quality, as well as Auto Picture mode, fast Face Recognition, Smile Capture, Blink Detection, an Underwater Movie mode, and the impressive High Sensitivity Digital SR mode that automatically adjusts the sensitivity up to ISO 6400 for sharp images of moving subjects - even in low light.
Users can use the camera's 2.5-inch IPS (In Plane Switching) LCD monitor to frame and view their shots, plus the display has an anti-reflection coating to reduce glare - even in bright sunlight, and the monitor's wide viewing allows users to view the display from nearly any angle. In addition the camera provides extensive in camera editing including built-in digital color filters, a dramatic fish-eye filter and a frame composite function for adding decorative frames to the images. The camera has both built-in and expandable memory using Secure Digital Cards, and the included rechargeable battery allows users to shoot over 200 shots on a charge, or view images in the display for over 3 hours on a full charge.

First pictures out of the box were taken in Bora Bora. This camera performed brilliantly above the water and below the water, still or movie modes. All the memories of a lifetime are captured beautifully. I could not have asked for more of a camera. Great pictures anytime I asked for them. Great battery life. If I had taken more time to learn the mode selections the camera would have even performed better. Buy the upgraded version of this camera and go to Bora Bora.

I wish I could give 3.5 stars, but the rating system doesn't allow it. The camera works underwater (snorkeling in Maui), although all problems reported in past reviews (can't see screen, water condensation inside lens) are true. Outside the water, the image is pretty good, unless there is water condensation for your last dip in the water. Flash is disappointing. Works well as in daytime shots, but in night shots, subjects are too dark. Worse than most my P&S, so maybe I am not using right. Other than that, very convenient camera that you can take everywhere. And get a spare battery, battery will last probably a day or two, especially if make movies.

I almost didn't buy this camera after reading the many negative reviews. I'm a professional and do most of my shooting with a Nikon D700. I've owned a dozen P&S cameras, most recently a Canon G9. It produced beautiful files but ultimately was not the carry-anywhere camera I was looking for. I fly fish and float tube; I wanted something safe in a watery environment where I wouldn't dare carry the Nikon.
The Optio W60 was one of the highest rated waterproof cameras. I liked the small size, the large LCD and the non-projecting lens with a wide setting of 28mm. The first files out of the camera were very disappointing and I seriously considered returning the camera. The files were flat and soft, much like RAW files from the Nikon. The histograms are very good, though, no clipping at either end and the exposures are very accurate. I've found that using the various program modes for specific situations gives better results than trying to shoot in either AUTO or PROGRAM. Using the "flower" mode gives pretty decent Bokeh. The files improve enormously when you set the contrast, saturation and sharpening sliders to the max. They do not seem over-processed and respond very well to post production. There is a manual White Balance function, this makes a huge difference. I've been able to get very good JPEGs right out of the camera.
The camera handles very well for such a small thing. The buttons are easy to manipulate, the menus are intuitive and not too lengthy, and I like the green button feature which allows you to easily access frequently used settings. Changing any setting is a matter of seconds, not endless scrolling. The macro mode is excellent. Shutter response is very fast. Battery life is not great and I'll be investing in 1-2 spares. The LCD does a reasonable job outdoors. Also, I find the images have more contrast when I shade the lens with my hand. Noise levels are consistent with most P&S; not as good as the Canon, better than a Panasonic. One of my pet peeves is cameras that are slow in Playback mode; this camera is very fast and has a very useful quick zoom feature for checking focus.
I bought this thinking it was the best of bad options. I've been pleasantly surprised and would not hesitate to carry this anywhere.
