The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM is a lens dedicated to digital SLR cameras with APS-C size image sensors offering a large aperture and Sigma's Optical Stabilization and provides a high level of optical performance. The combination of the large aperture of f/2.8 and anti-shake function makes capturing exceptional photos in low light achievable, and the wide angle is well suited for indoor photography. It offers superior peripheral brightness as well as a compact and lightweight construction. Two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements and three Aspherical lenses provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting. Designed with inner focusing and inner zooming systems, high image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 11.8 inches (30cm) throughout the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.1. The incorporation of HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) is capable of autofocusing with all Nikon D-SLR cameras.
Note! Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35mm SLR cameras. For Pentax mount, if the camera body does not support HSM, auto focus will not be available.

Bought this lens for my Nikon D200. Needing a 50mm format. Nikon has one that's a 18-50MM F3.5-5.6 AF NIKON. But bought one and was not to impress with the workmanship. It feels cheap.
I had a 18-200mm Sigma DC that I was please with. So I went and bought this lens.
After receiving the lens from B&H. I inspect it and the quality was good. Feels good too. Has a switch for off on for AF and has an another off and on switch for the OS stabalization.
I usually leave the switch on at all times. So when I take a shot. Don't have to remember to switch it on or off.
The result I get is pretty impressive. I used it and get great result without using the built in flash.
I'm not a professional photographer, but I'm noticing I'm having more keepers that I would otherwise delete.
The stabilization works I guess. I used guess coz I still get some shaky result with some of my pictures not allot but I do get some. Why I gave it a 4 Star should be a 4 1/2 star but don't have that to check. If your comparing this with the Nikon 18-50mm. I'd buy the Sigma. Don't take my word check it out yourself.

I bought this lens for my Nikon D80 prior to a fall trip to the north shore of Lake Superior. The build quality is the best I have seen on a lens in this price range and while a bit heavy, it feels solid and well constructed. I found the range of the focal length to be easy to work with and I rarely found myself changing lenses while walking around with it. The image stabilization feature seemed unobtrusive, I had no real indication that it was helping or not though it 'felt' like it was working as more shots taken in questionable low-light situations seemed to turn out better than I had expected them to.
Unfortunately, the images produced by this lens cannot compare to my Nikon 50mm 1.8 (non-DX) and 35mm 1.8 (DX) primes - both of which are very inexpensive lenses of seemingly lesser build quality than the Sigma. The chromatic aberration can be distracting at times, especially in low-light images with a bright full-spectrum light source (specifically, the moon on a clear night). The images are not as crisp as I had hoped and seem to be rather lifeless at times, especially compared to images from my cheap 35mm and 50mm primes.
That said, this is a very useful lens for walking around with. I find it quite versatile and feel that it serves as an affordable wide-angle for DX-sensor camera bodies like mine.

Comments about Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM Zoom For Nikon D-SLRs:
This lens is a great buy for the money. Seems to be well built and takes a very good picture. Yes, it can't compare with a prime lens but at this price can live with its imperfections. It doesn't focus super fast, but isn't super slow either. Not as light as the name brand, but think this may be because of better construction.

Comments about Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM Zoom For Nikon D-SLRs:
I'm a beginner with digital photography, so I bought this as an all purpose lens. The first thing I noticed was the quality in construction, handling, and function. I've handled a similar lens from Cannon, and I can confidently say that Sigma has a superior build. The autofocus is SUPER fast and integrates perfectly with my Nikon D90. Also, I love how the zoom is non-telescoping-very cool design.
For the price, you cant go wrong with this product.

Excellent aperture for a variable zoom lens. The pictures I have taken have turned out well and the lens hood helps immensely with sun spots. Under various lighting conditions, I have been able to get some great pictures.

I can push it in action situations too. It works well with my Nikon 600 flash when it is needed.

Comments about Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM Zoom For Nikon D-SLRs:
Very cheap and looks great. It looks like the most expensive fast aperture lens. It´s not so sharp at maximum aperture, a little soft, but very very sharp at F/5.6 or lower aperture. Focus ring works very well, zoom ring is a little heavy to spin.
Good contrast and colors. AF is very fast!

Comments about Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM Zoom For Nikon D-SLRs:
I was surprised at how sharp this lens is. I have owned the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 and loved it but didn't really want to spend that much so thought I'd give this one a try. I'm very happy I did. This lens is sharp even wide open and the image stabilization works very well. Focusing is not the fastest but quick enough for me and very quiet. I would definitely recommend this lens.

Comments about Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM Zoom For Nikon D-SLRs:
I recently got rid of my cheap Tamron lenses and wanted a good standard zoom lens to start building out my kit with. I was debating between this one and the Nikon 18-55mm VR. I had some concerns with the build quality on the Nikon and manual focus ring. After reading every review I could possibly find on the two, I decided to continue my growing relationship with Sigma lenses and settled on this one. The build quality is outstanding and I couldn't be happier with the pictures I've gotten out of it. If you're looking for a solid standard zoom lens but don't want to spend $600 to get it, this is the one.

Comments about Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM Zoom For Nikon D-SLRs:
Probably the best lens one can find in the price range, that delivers the specs.
Only concern is the focus ring is slightly too loose (ie - could use a bit more resistance when turning). But this becomes inconsequential in light of how well built lens is and the great OS and photo quality it delivers at low light - and for a great price.

Comments about Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM Zoom For Nikon D-SLRs:
I photograph events on occasion so this lens fit my needs perfectly. I use it on a Nikon D300 body so it converts the focal length to 27-75mm. It has a sturdy built and gives nice all-around color. So far I haven't had any major problems with it. The only thing is that I noticed some "color fringing" around objects in low-light situations.
