The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM is a lens dedicated to digital SLR cameras with APS-C size image sensors offering a large aperture and Sigma's Optical Stabilization and provides a high level of optical performance. The combination of the large aperture of f/2.8 and anti-shake function makes capturing exceptional photos in low light achievable, and the wide angle is well suited for indoor photography. It offers superior peripheral brightness as well as a compact and lightweight construction. Two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements and three Aspherical lenses provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting. Designed with inner focusing and inner zooming systems, high image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 11.8 inches (30cm) throughout the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.1.
Note! Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35mm SLR cameras. For Pentax mount, if the camera body does not support HSM, auto focus will not be available.

Comments about Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM Zoom For Pentax D-SLRs:
I find the lens pretty sharp wide open at f/2.8, I had the DC Macro Non-HSM a while back and its actually a bit sharper than it. I like the fact that lens does not extend when you change focal length.
Due to the HSM it is very quiet as you expect, but I did not find the focusing to be that much faster than the screwdrive mechanism type lens. I also did not find that much of a difference between the OS and the body SR. Overall I find the lens a good replacement for the kit lens and a good deal for the price.
The lens does not have the red dot on the back to use for reference when mounting to the body, but you can use the white dot for focal length as a a reference point when mounting it to the body.
Obviously one wishes it had a max aperture of f/2.8 throughout the range, but you can't complain for the price, also you can push the K-5 ISO quite a bit so its no problem in terms of shutter speed.

Comments about Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM Zoom For Pentax D-SLRs:
I wondered why my digital camera was yielding pictures of average sharpness. To get more reach at sports events, I purchased a 300mm sigma lens to replace the 200 mm kit lens from pentax. I immediately noticed an improvement. So I replaced my other kit lens with the above sigma lens. I now get the sharpness that the camera should deliver. Sigma lens is a good choice!!

Comments about Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM Zoom For Pentax D-SLRs:
This is a solid lens. I'm not 100% convinced the OS in this lens is an improvement over the body image stabilization, but it seems to be roughly equivalent.
Focus is fast and accurate. F/2.8 goes away by ~20mm but a significant improvement over the Pentax 18-55mm kit lens.
I am glad to have made this purchase.
