The Sigma 50-200mm f/ 4- 5.6 DC OS HSM is a compact, high-performance telephoto zoom lens. It utilizes Sigma's own Optical Stabilizer function to eliminate the effects of camera shake so subjects can be easily and clearly seen in the cameras viewfinder in addition to the image. It allows the use of shutter speeds up to 4 stops slower than normal for steady, handheld photography.
The lens incorporates SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass in the front lens groups and is equipped with an inner focusing system to provide high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. The incorporation of HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high-speed auto focus.
The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides high contrast images throughout the entire zoom range. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 43.3inches (110cm) throughout the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.5. An inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making it suitable for use with circular polarizing filters.

It exceeded what i was awaiting, in fact its pretty good on image quality, OS is pretty good, comparable to the IS on Canon. I didnt really test much the OS but it seems to do it job.. guarantee 2 f-stops even 3.. couldnt get the 4 claimed fstops.
its not pretty sharp wide open, but when stopped down, very good.
Nice ring to focus and the zoom ring is also smooth. The HSM focus pretty fast and quietly, barely do noisy compared to the 55-250mm IS on canon. Although Canon is sharper, but Sigma focus faster, doesnt gives you a "punch" when focusing. Its pretty quicky end-to-end. If you shake the lens a bit you can hear the OS parts. In fact its pretty wierd at first because other "small zoom" lens i have i didnt hear it. A metal mount is also pretty good, compared to the plastic one on Canon. The hood included is also pretty good and mount easily and tight. You can add filter and still use the hood. the lens doesnt rotate when focusing, since its internal, great for polarizers. The mount is a bit tight at all but doenst require force to mount on camera, Canon is smoother on this point.
Its a little bit heavy if you never used a telephoto zoom but you quickly get used to it, its lightweight compared to others telephoto zoom at the same range.
Compared to Canon, its a big win besides "Sharpness", but for me the price called it. almost 50% cheaper and doesnt kick me when focusing.

I needed a lens to extend the range of the kit lens, take on vacation. I read a lot of lens reviews and found detailed one for this len's predecessor. The upgrade fixed most of the weakpoints of the predecessor so I decided to give it a shot, couldn't beat the price.
The OS system is silent and works as advertised. A solid 3 stops maybe four, really helps compensate against the relatively high f-stop. I was expecting a bit more from the HSM, but it focuses rather quickly and silently (on canon XSi body). Not spectacularly quick, like I had hoped. No travel lock, but so far the lens doesn't creep at all. Took a bit to get used to the focus ring turning, but being the first autofocus lens I've purchased aside from the kit lens that may be normal. I'm slowly venturing into digital and autofocus at the same time so there is some learning to be done. Construction quality seems reasonable for modern plastic body lenses. zoom and focus rings work smoothly with no play. Images are sharp. I haven't done any brick wall shots or other optical tests.
The only thing I find really annoying is that the zoom ring moves in the opposite direction of the canon lenses. Clockwise increases the zoom, opposite of the direction of almost all canon lenses. I almost sent it back, but after looking at a large number of lenses that appears to be common, with manufacturers being inconsistent within their own product lines.

You can't beat the price of this lens. I'm still learning about photography but this lens performs and does a nice job with portraits and the telefoto is great in bright light. Great for the beginer.

I use this lens primarily for nature shots. A bit out of focus at the 50mm and 200mm setting, but great for someone new to photography for close up shots.

My husband purchased this lens for me as a Christmas gift because I needed a quality lens that I could use as I start my photography business, and I'd say that I found it. Though the f-stop isn't as large as the more expensive brands, this lens does exactly what I need it to, which is take clear, quality photo from a great distance and allows me to zoom into details without having to waste much time changing my location. I think it makes it easier on my clients because they do not have to wait for me to adjust.
I recommend this lens for anyone who is just beginning their photographic journey or is just wanting it for amateur usage and does not want to spend too much money.

Bought this as a 2nd lens to go with the 18-55 kit lens on my Canon EOS T3. Controls on this lens are comparable to the Canon lens so very easy transition from one lens to the other. Would have preferred to just get an 18-200 to avoid swapping lenses, but economics dictated the 2 lens route, and so far I really haven't been disappointed. Effectiveness of optical stabilizer on the Sigma is the only attribute that has given me pause; I don't feel that it is quite as effective as that of the Canon lens, BUT, then again, the Sigma is a much longer lens and therefore more susceptible to camera shake, etc.
All in all, I heartily recommend this lens particularly if economics are a factor in your buying decision!

This is great as a people-shooting lens. It's small, unobtrusive, but you can reach out and snag a great candid shot. It's definitely soft at 200mm and f/5.6, but it's not too bad, and it gets nice and sharp at f/8. Not real good for indoor use, as it's quite slow, but it's perfect for outdoor people photography.

Comments about Sigma 50-200mm f/4-5.6 DC OS HSM High Performance Telephoto Zoom For Canon Cameras:
I was very hesitant to purchase any lens, because I was worried I would get something like most of the reviewers got and weren't too happy with, but I needed something more than the 18-55 kit lens for my Canon T2i. I looked and looked... Watched video reviews... Finally, I bought it.
Wow! Very nice. I almost use it exclusively now. I love how fast, quiet and accurate the HSM Focus System is. The zoom and focus wheels seemed a bit tight when I first got it, but they have loosened up now and are great.
Obviously this lens is not going to be good in low light as some reviews say. The aperture is F4 at its fastest, so what do you expect.
The OS (Optical Stabilization) is very good too. It really smoothes out most shaking.
The lens is also built very well in my opinion. I only have the kit lens to compare it to, but it is night and day difference. I wonder what a Canon L Series lens feels like... :)
The Bokeh was another thing I was concerned about. But again, very nice. It really drowns out the background when used correctly.

Haven't used it much, yet, but the autofocus is quick in good light. Lens is light and pics seem pretty good, though low light at 200mm moon shots seemed 'soft'. Price was right, esp for OS (IS).

In good light conditions it's really good! However, in low light conditions, it's quite poor! Takes an eternity to focus in these situations.
Focus in good light is pretty fast. I think it misses focus sometimes, even under good light. Image quality is very good!

I'm not someone who can spend big money for a primo lens. This is such a great bargain. A lot of performance for a small price. Image quality is very good. Love the USM focus. Focus works well also. A little hunting at full zoom in low light, but as expected. Nicely constructed. Good image stabilization. Using it on my Rebel T2i in addition to the kit 18-55. Like that it starts at 50mm rather than 55mm. Overall I am very satisfied with this purchase.

Comments about Sigma 50-200mm f/4-5.6 DC OS HSM High Performance Telephoto Zoom For Canon Cameras:
After recently purchasing my first DSLR (Canon T1i), I quickly realized that I would need a longer range lens for a trip that would include outings to both MLS and MLB games. A little internet research showed that things could quickly get expensive. I had already resigned myself to renting one for the trip, but luckily, a friend told me about his Sigma lens. After letting me give it a test run at an end-of-year school party at a local waterpark, I was amazed.
The effective range and the overall quality of the images left me dumbfounded. I honestly never thought that I would be able to take so many great photos so soon after having purchased a DSLR. I immediately ordered my own and have taken both scenic and portrait photos during my trip that have wowed family and friends. A few have even won the ultimate award...a tear or two from Moms and Grandpas.
While there are obviously lens options with more range and assorted bells and whistles, the combination of telephoto range and automatic stability make this Sigma offering a must-have for the amateur photographer. I would list Cons if I had actually found any. For the price point and quality, Sigma is definitely the way to go!

The lens work perfectly on my canon EOS 550 and the images produced are good on most part of the focal range, like what most review says. But at this pricing it is quite a worthwhile investment for amateur photographers. Build is quite solid and autofocusing works well.
Only shortfall would be that it does not work well in low lighting.

Only had limited uses to date, but images taken indoors, with Flash, were excellent. Lens focuses slower then my Canon 70-200, but is 1/5 the price too. Outside have used once, and soccer pictures also came out almost as sharp as my Canon lens. Did extremely well in fast action sequences, almost all shots came out in focus, given my comment above about speed, was a pleasent suprise.
