Comments about Thecus N4100PRO 4-Bay NAS Server:
Transfers not nearly as fast as I'd hoped, having trouble with initially loading it up. Put in 2 tb Seagate drive as JBOD, copied from a 1.5TB drive, took > 30h to copy - LAN connection is gigabit. Now I don't see in Windows 7 mapped drive the top level directory under which those files were copied, though it is there because I can change to that directory and see the dirs & files under it. May start over. Also have a small iSCSI portion on the JBOD that works fine. Nervous about commiting to this device. Thecus could hire a native English writer to edit their doc - can usually figure out what they mean but sometimes it's not easy.

Great little home NAS.
Really needs the 1Gig Ram upgrade, you want 1GB 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 400. NOT DDR2
Besides that is very stable, fast. Don't think the fan is that noisy, but the blue light works as a great nightlight.
Make sure your network supports Gigabit bandwidth to take full use of its speed.
Just got to hunt for 4+1 same drives to feed to it.
Raid 5 allows you for 1 failed HD but i got an extra one to replace a future dead one.

Comments about Thecus N4100PRO 4-Bay NAS Server:
PROS: This RAID based file server works very well and is probably the absolute best deal for you money. Set it up with RAID5 and your data will survive the failure of one hard drive, setup with RAID10 and it will survive failure of 2 hard drives. If setup with 4 1 Gigabyte hard drives and configured with RAID5 you get about 3Gb of usable storage, with RAID10 you will get about 1.8Gb usable storage. Once connected to your ethernet network you will be able to access it from any computer on your network. Ideal for photos and other things you cannot replace. Periodic backup is still recommended.
CONS: While fairly easy to setup, some of the advanced features are never properly documented or explained. Be sure when you connect your ethernet cable to hook to WAN rather than LAN -which is the very reversible of what you would expect.
OTHER: This is far better than the more expensive Drobo, or Buffalo. If and when a hard drive fails, rebuilding the array is faster and simpler than with other brand units.

Comments about Thecus N4100PRO 4-Bay NAS Server:
I knocked off 1/2 a star, but they rounded it up to 5. Awesome product. Was able to plug in 4x 1Tb WD Green Caviars and go. If you're like me, and take it apart right away to see the insides, make sure everything is put back together correctly. I failed to secure the RAM and was puzzled for about 3hrs...Default IP is 192.168.2.256 and DHCP is not enabled. If you want to enable Load Balancing, etc., you have to set a static IP. The door feels/sounds like it's breaking.I've yet to do anything fancy with it, still getting settled in. Interface could use some help though.Overall, great product; only wished I would have waited a week to buy it (went down $10, [...]).
