Comments about Canon Legria HF200 High Definition 'PAL' Camcorder:
I'm new to video, and brought this for my wife to record our new family. I hesitated going for this vs more feature-laden models or a SD cheepie: but I'm glad we got it!
It's easy to use - we were shooting within one minute of powering it up. The quality is great: strong vivid colours outdoors, good colour balancing indoors. I haven't noticed the 'poor low light performance' reported by others - I turn the lights on before I shoot indoor video. I don't expect any small camera like this to be be a great low light performer.
For now we just play video direct from camera to HDTV using a HDMI cable (ordered separately). We haven't installed the software - just transfer the MTS files direct from card to hard drive and get a 3rd party editing program.
We get around 70 min battery life, and 70 min FXP recording time on a 8 gbyte card: which is fine unless you are making a movie. The sleep mode is great – can record very quickly after opening the screen.
It's simple to use, has enough features that it can grow with us as we improve, and the quality of the video means it will still look good in 10-20 years time when our kids have grown.
