LaCie 1TB Rugged XL External Desktop Hard Drive
The 1TB Rugged XL External Desktop Hard Drive from LaCie is a high-capacity external desktop hard drive, with a stunning industrial design by Neil Poulton. The drive is housed in an aluminum enclosure with an orange rubber sleeve. It features internal bumpers for protection and a heat dissipating design to aid cooling.
The Rugged XL connects to a computer via eSATA or USB 2.0. It includes backup software for Windows and Mac.

I have been a long time user of the 500gb firewire/USB rugged drive. Love them but needed to speed up my transfer time to other storage devices. Downside with this drive - you have to plug in for power - smaller drives are bus powered and great for on location use. This is now one more thing i have to plug in, another set of power cables I have to remember to pack. My biggest complaint with this - no firewire 800. I back up via USB and my laptop - large video files and photos. Then back at the office can use the Esata to back everything up - this is the best feature and only reason for getting this drive. I was using a MUCH cheaper 2tb external drive with Esata and it crashed multiple times because of all the travel - this drive so far has been very reliable...

I'm using this hard drive specifically for back-up with time Machine on my Mac, as well for general back-up of video files. It's a sturdy hd, but don't be fooled by the images online, it's big and heavy. It also requires a (provided) power source, so you'll need to use more than just your computers USB juice to keep it up and running. It's quiet, however, and once I set it up, I forgot about it. I question the "rugged" bumper, it feels a bit silly for this size of HD, more suitable for those that are used on the road. This is a simple set up and leave style HD. It came with "set-up" software, but I just ignored those, and reformatted the drive for my mac, which took a few minutes. Easy as pie, for a Mac, not certain about pc's.

this is my third lacie drive. I love them. I would recommend this rugged drive over the other brands that are not rugged because i have lost 2 terabytes due to scratched disk from falling over! you won't be disappointed by this tuff drive, I love mine!

I'm using this product for expanding my gaming abilities, while I save up for a new laptop.
So far it's been great. I know from friends who work in the photo and video industries that LaCie drives are very reliable, last a long time, and can handle a lot of use with little or no degradation of quality.
only problem so far is it's heavy, but that's the nature of the beast, and i really dig the orange housing. reminds me a big lego, and if/when I drop it, it won't be a problem.

I'm taking this Hard Drive with me to Afghanistan, where I'll be travelling in helos, cargo planes, and off-road convoys - I need a rugged external hard drive that will not fail under austere conditions (it's not like I can drive to Best Buy for a replacement).
As a test I dropped it on the floor - and it still works. So off to Helmand Province with a tested piece of equipment!

I use this drive to store data backups, and for music/sound editing with a laptop, so I wanted the fast transfer speed of eSATA (through an express card slot).
The drive is fast, quiet, and rugged. "Bulky" is part of the "rugged" as far as I'm concerned. If you want a slim little 1TB drive you can slip in your pocket you'll get the durability that comes with a unit in a more modest enclosure like that.
On balance, I find that the inconvenience of an external power supply - and thus the need for yet another available outlet/socket - is outweighed by the ease of *replacing* the power supply should it have a problem. A significant percentage of HD failures are related to the drive's power supply and not the drive itself or the controller. Many other drives without such an external power supply will have to be shipped somewhere or taken to a "pro" shop for repair (if repair is even possible) at who-knows-what expense and delay. With a unit like this, it's a simple matter of getting a new power adapter and plugging it back in, so I actually consider the slightly-inconventient external power adapter an advantage.
And if I am correctly informed on this, LaCie will replace defective power adapters at no charge in many cases.
For my money, this one can't be beat if you can accomodate its size and weight.

I purchased this drive to ferry large quantities of photos to and from my job (along with my Lightroom catalog) so I could work on the photos in both places. Works as advertised. Installed/formatted easily. No recognition problems on any system so far. Good transfer speed with the eSata. Decent heft and appears quite rugged. Wish the power adapter cable were a little longer, but that's fairly minor.

Product came with USB, eSATA and power cord. I have Win7 and had trouble mounting drive on dekstop and laptop, but LaCie's tech support was helpful (used web site--btw, do not expect immediate/quick response, but it is within 24 hours). I like the drive. I gave it a 3 because it is HUGE (not so portable) and it DOES require AC Power vs. using USB power.
