The Sony Cybershot DSC-TX1 Digital Camera is packed with new technology and features which allow it to boast major improvements in low-light photography. With the new "Exmor R" back-illuminated CMOS sensor technology, performance improves shooting in low-light scenarios, enhancing image clarity and drastically reducing grain, creating amazingly clear, vibrant photos. Sony's "Exmor R" image sensors can gather more light, resulting in approximately twice the sensitivity compared to conventional sensors.
To further extend low-light shooting performance, the DSC-TX1 incorporates Hand-held Twilight and Anti-motion Blur, and Multi-shot Modes. Using "Exmor R" CMOS sensor's high speed, these modes capture six separate images in less than a second and utilize Sony's BIONZ processor to combine the shots into a single image of extraordinary detail and low noise.
The DSC-TX1 is made for an audience that wants advanced technology in a compact design. With a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens, it lets users focus in at as little as 0.4 inches from a subject for extraordinary close-up shots. The 4x telescopic zoom is perfect for capturing far-away subjects, and Sony's Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps overcome camera shake. In the Sweep Panorama mode the camera shoots continuously while you sweep across the scene and then automatically stitches the pictures together to create one stunning panoramic photo.
The TX1 features a new operation on the touch panel that lets you scroll through images with an effortless "flick" of your finger and directly access menus on the 3-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus display. With its slim profile of just 0.64-inch (16.5mm), the 10.2 mega-pixel DSC-TX1 offers streamlined, distinguished curves for a sophisticated look appealing to the fashion-oriented who are also looking for great performance.

As a film-based photographer (who does shoot digitally with an DSLR on occasion), I discovered that digital compacts have really come a long way in terms of image quality as of late. Granted, maybe not long enough of a way for many of us very discerning types, but long enough to where I could be pleased with the results, and most of all, just make shooting casually in public environments (where a DSLR immediately says "kick me out") fun.
Enter the TX1. Offering little in way of manual controls, it reminds me of my old Nikon p&s (LAF35). It inspired a different photographer out of me, one more lucid and fleeting. Given I'm not expecting much in terms of image quality (this is not a big sensor here), the loss of manual controls then is not a big deal. It is actually liberating to someone like me who is so used to controlling everything all the time!
Compared to other compacts, image quality due to the Exmor sensor (and I'm gonna say the Zeiss lens because I love Zeiss!) is quite good. Sony advertises greater low-light performance, but noise-reduction is a culprit for fine detail in higher-ISOs. But, the Handheld Twilight Mode takes 6 shots simultaneously and combines them for a low-noise image and it really works (for still objects). Over all, I can't help but emphasize the colors and color gradation and low-light performance is over all quite pleasing compared to other compacts.
Everything else about the camera is excellent. It looks like a refined professional tool. It's thinness makes no bump in your pocket, and the camera begs to be taken around (more photos for you!) Sweep Panorama mode is quite fun and the results are stunning (though low-res, watch out). It powers up quickly and is quite fast and responsive (low shutter-lag) The touch-screen interface, though, can be a tad unresponsive at first, but you will eventually get used to it.
also, 720p video is fantastic to have.
I'd say if you fit the criteria I describe above, the TX1 is a no brainer. Alternatives include its sister model the WX1, which is the same camera but with a faster lens (not Zeiss though!). More manual control can be found elsewhere (Canon S90 or G11), but I'd save manual control for my SLR. SLR is business, TX1 is overwhelming pleasure.

Comments about Sony DSC-TX1 Cybershot Digital Camera (Gray):
I bought this camera for my 13 year old daughter as a Christmas gift. She absolutely loves it. I think the picture quality is very impressive and the features on the camera are great. The panoramic sweep is awesome. In fact I may even purchase one for myself. I have never been dissatisfied with a Sony product, so as always I do recommend this as a great point and shoot camera to have. The only thing I found surprising is that there is no black and white option on the camera.

Great little camera. I purchased this for my wife as she has wanted a small light "point-n-shoot" for some time now. We have 5 grandchildren and this camera seems to fill the bill very well. Easy enough for a 'nana' yet has some good features which are simple to set and use. Fits into her purse easily, is light and the 16gig SD card provides all the room necessary for all the pics she can shoot PLUS that needed video too.

Comments about Sony DSC-TX1 Cybershot Digital Camera (Gray):
Most of the shots I take are of friends, usually when we're hanging about at night in bars or people's homes, and for that, this camera excels. The difference in quality between the shots I've taken at concerts with this and other cameras is ridiculous, although be prepared for a art-like smudge effect when shooting in extremely dark situations. The colour balance isn't as good as cameras by other companies (at least to my eye), but that's more than made up fro by the excellent panorama shots and the ease of use. Videos are great too.

This is a great camera to take with you anywhere! It's compact and still gives you a 3 inch screen with 4x Zoom. It's been said that good things come in small packages, and this is a great example.
Pros: Compact Size, 4x Zoom, Good in Low light, Records video at 720 HD Plus you can use optical zoom during video recording. Touch screen controls.
Cons: Wish it had longer zoom. But still for it's size, it's good.

Comments about Sony DSC-TX1 Cybershot Digital Camera (Gray):
I just started using the new camera, so I'm still learning about all of it's features. I might just need to change the image size settings to get it to take pictures a little faster, but all in all, i'm happy with my purchase and would recommend this product. My previous camera was also a sony cybershot, which eventually got old, but served well (3 years) and I truly believe in the quality of their products...
