Just for background, I am a radiologist, so I have a professional interest in image clarity and resolution. My "serious" cameras are Sony A700 and A350s, so as a gift for my wife, I was looking for something compact & light we could take for vacations, impulse trips, family photos, etc., that would still provide mostly autosetting and give us sophisticated still & video imaging. This camera fits the bill beautifully.

To get more functionality, you have to go to the mirrorless systems, at about 2x the cost. This camera gives me 90%+ of the features I need.

The Sony display is superb, as is the anti-shake capability. The iScene autosettings are accurate and amazing (it took me years to learn to do firework photography the way this camera does right out of the box). You can make it as "point and shoot" or as manual as you want. The zoom range is more than adequate.

I have only 3 complaints and 2 of them are fixable. Sony duo pro memory is expensive, so we use a duo pro adapter and put an inexpensive microSDHC card in it. Gives us 3 16 Gbyte cards for roughly half the price of buying the manufacturer cards. Batteries can be an issue, so we have several and just keep one charging all the time (fresh battery every day on vacation). Finally, as noted by other reviewers, the flash doesn't quite cover the full range of the zoom lens, so if you go wide angle, note that you will have light fall-off towards the edges. If I can, I always move closer and don't zoom all the way in.

We've had this camera for about 7 months and taken over 1,000 photos and two dozen videos. We've thought highly enough to give our children this camera as a gift as well, to capture photos of their vacations and our grandchildren. We trust it to capture our most important memories. My "serious" cameras rarely come out anymore, unless I'm doing tripod-based macros or panoramas. Enough said?

this is a great little camera. maybe a little more bulky than some of the new shiny ones out there, but the low light shooting features and panorama mode are great!

I researched and bought this little camera for a 2-week trip to Greece. By the end of the trip, the DSC-WX1 and I were best buddies, having taken just shy of 1700 full-res photos and videos. (Buy the 16GB stick - don't skimp on memory.) My wife and I love to take photos of meals in restaurants, sunsets (lower the ev setting for better sunset colors), scenery and nightlife (not to mention all the cats on the Greek islands). The low-light capability of this camera is amazing. Not having to use flash greatly enhances the preservation of the ambience and feeling of a photo, especially night scenes. The video works very well, and it was fun to document the experience of disembarking the ferry on the island of Patmos at night, or the trucker's strike on the way to Delphi. Sony makes some very nice little touch-screen cameras, but my wife and I prefer actual physical controls over a touch-screen. The controls on this camera work very well. I need reading glasses, but when rotating the control knob, an enlarged version of the control knob pops up on the screen and is large enough for me to see. The screen also has an extra-bright mode, making it easier to see in bright light. There is plenty of bright light in Greece, but I had little problem selecting the mode and framing the shot, although there were times when I had to look back and forth a few times when framing in bright sunlight.

One of our initial objections was the absence of a viewfinder, which we have on our other Sony cameras. But, I wanted Sony's new low-light sensor technology and I needed a small form factor with physical buttons. This little camera did the trick, as the large bright display made up for the lack of a viewfinder in the majority of cases.

The wide-angle lens was great for taking interior shots, and the panorama feature worked very well. Many museums, churches and other places do allow photos, but without flash. The low-light capability was great for this.

I bought extra batteries so that I could charge one while using the other. I put in a fresh battery every day, but the battery still had plenty of charge by the end of each day. I didn't mess around and bought a Sony 16GB memory stick. Oh, it's so nice not to have to worry about running out of memory!

We found the zoom range to be adequate. I found more cases where I was happy to have the wide angle rather than feeling limited by the zoom.

I also bought the little Sony camera case that fits the camera perfectly, and it lived on my belt the whole time.

The flash range seemed to be very good. But, on full wide angle, I sometimes noticed a small shadow in the lower left corner of the photo, as if the lens were casting a shadow in the flash field.

I bought the camera because I wanted to bring home some great memories. We traveled with carry-on only, so it had to be small. This little guy provided exactly what I was looking for.

The size of the camera makes it handy, and it looks good!
The screed is large and the reading devices make it easy to use (my eyes are not too good!).
I watched the first pictures on my computer: they are sharp, nice colors...
I don't see anything not so graet so far....

The camera works well and was easy to use. It was wasy to learn how to use the functions of the camera. Picture quality is good. I had purchased the camera for it's macro lens abilities, but these proved to be less than what was hoped (my very, very old Mavica takes much better close up pictures)

I am a non-professional who needed to upgrade my old point & shoot. I did a ton of research before I made this purchase. The camera has grown on me. At first, it was frustrating b/c I was getting overexposed photos or colors that weren't the best. This really is a camera that is best used by knowing and adjusting the settings. You can get many different looks out of it. I found that the pre-set settings were not my favorite for many situations but for others it works great. One of the main things I was looking for was a camera that shoots well in low-light. This camera does that and I've been very pleased with the results. The hand-held twilight setting is my favorite and works very well even in lit settings.

I referred back to another review that talked about adjusting the EV and the White Balance in certain scenarios and that definitely makes a big difference. You just need to prepare yourself to take the time to learn the camera. I would not recommend it for someone who just wants to point and shoot on auto settings. The panorama feature is great and the video quality is very good. The body is lean and sleek. The ability to take multiple shots at once with the burst feature is cool.

Amazing low light, cool shot overlay mode, panorama is very good. All in all, a perfect pocket camera. I have a closet full of hard working cameras, this one gets to go on vacation.

Excellent low light shooting, low low noise with deep rich blacks and great contrast. Great for shooting live at concerts with no flash.

Lens has quite significant distortion in the edge of field and some strange computer processing (combination of noise reduction and a smoothing/splicing effect in similar colour areas such as faces) that can be quite disconcerting.

For portraits I would recommend framing wider shots and then cropping.

Great camera that exceeded my expectations for low light performance. Can manually operate a large range of features. Automatic operation is very good.

I had my eye on this camera after reading David Pogue's NYT review in 11/09 (or thereabouts). I like shooting low light w/o flash, and this camera really excels at the job. I'm currently in the Middle East, and I'm schlepping around this camera in pretty heavy tourist and work mode. It's holding up great,... good battery life,... 110/220V charger is great for overseas travel. My only critiques are 1) the cable connection is a bit awkward (be sure to squeeze the release on the sides of the cable before yanking it out!), and 2) Sony's love of expensive, proprietary memory sticks.

Bottom line is that I'm loving the camera and would recommend it to others for a good point and shoot camera.

This camera was used on a recent trip to Egypt and performed well. The low light feature was appreciated and the camera produced good results under near impossible conditions hand held. The panoramic feature is another that worked better than I expected. Other features of the camera were intuitive and produced excellent results.

When shopping for a point and shoot the price ranges quite a bit but in this case you definetly get what you pay for which is good! I had nikon s70 which is similarily priced but i returned it as it didn't take the quality of pictures i wanted but found the DSC-WX1 to be a far superior replacement.

After doing much research on compact cameras, it came down to this camera. I was looking for an excellent picture while being able to perform in numerous situation, especially low light photos. Another big plus for this camera is the response time, which was almost instantaneous (that's right compact camera users, you no longer need to wait 3 seconds for the camera to go off when you try and take a shot).

The camera lives up to its claim on the best for low light photo shooting. I took numerous low light shots and was pleased with all. The 6-shot compiling feature works great for blur reduction as well as capturing as much in-focus detail as possible.

The camera is easy to use and keep in a front pocket (a big plus for men). The panoramic shooting function is easy and fun to use. The camera works well with scene shots, both day and night.

I would definitely recommend this camera, though wait for the next version to be released in March for the 10x optical zoom (as this one only has 5x).
