Overall the MC6 is a very well-built, compact unit that does almost everything I need it to do. I knew when I purchased it that Sony is very proprietary with their products. For people who are looking to get all the functionality that it claims, you MUST have a Sony HandyCam.
Here is how I use this unit: I video my performances in HD and make SD DVD copies available immediately afterwards.
Connecting my Canon HG21 to the MC6 using the composite video inputs works fine for this. It records the video in real time and then takes a few minutes afterward to finalize the disc.
Most of the videos I record are longer than 1 hour so I use the HSP setting (1 step below the HQ setting) and the quality is still pretty good. It will give me 1 hour, 31 minutes, 41 seconds of video.
I like to use a custom jpeg background for the DVD menu and that is possible by selecting that option through the menus as long as you have only ONE jpeg on your memory card. I purchased the MC6 as opposed to the updated MC10 because of this single feature (they left it off the MC10).
Also, the MC6 is very particular about how your SD card is formatted; it read the jpeg file when it was formatted by my camera, but not when it was formatted by my computer.
The jpeg quality on the DVD is very poor no matter what the resolution of the original image. The MC6 stretches the image and cuts off the left and right sides. I cannot find anything in the documentation that gives specifications for the jpeg file, or how to set it up so it will display correctly.
Here are the PROS:
• Very good quality even from composite video input.
• Fast. Will finalize the DVD in about 3-4 minutes.
• Compact. Easy to travel with.
• Nice preview screen so you can view what is going onto the DVD.
Here are the CONS:
• Gloss black body immediately looks awful from fingerprint smudges.
• DV in, USB, Memory Stick Pro, SD, xD, and Memory Stick Pro Duo ports are pretty much useless for non-Sony devices. With the exception of being able to use a custom jpeg file on my SD card for the menu, I could not get ANY of the other ports to read or input ANY video.
• AVCHD Dubbing ONLY works with Sony HandyCams.

It's nicely built and the viewscreen is very handy. If you use your videocamera a lot this would be great for making DVD's of those videos. But I take points off because it really doesn't do what SONY claims. They say you can connect to virtually any camera, VCR, or DVR. I bought this to expand the capacity of my U-Verse DVR. I've got too many programs that I want to see and not enough time to watch them. Also, U-Verse has a nasty trick--if your router goes down for any reason you can't watch television--not even programs you've already recorded. Technicians say it's because everything goes through the router--even previously recorded material. But I can switch the input on the TV and watch DVD's. So I wanted to burn some DVD's with some of the programs I'd recorded to make room for new material and as a backup for when the router goes out--which it will. Plus, if you've ever had a DVR die on you then you know when they bring a replacement they can't transfer over all your programs. Say goodbye to all those season ending episodes. I thought this might be the solution I was looking for. The problem is the MC6 won't let you record anything from your DVR. So while technically you can "connect" the MC6 to your DVR you can't do anything with it. I'm not trying to pirate anything--I just want to be able to watch what I've already recorded.
I've read elsewhere this also applies to DirecTV DVR's. Don't buy this with hopes of archiving TV shows.

Opened the box and set-up took 20-minutes. Very easy to understand directions. Great way to convert video tapes to DVD. There is a lot of yellow when replaying the DVD on a HD TV. But playing the DVD on a computer was much better. Great way to save VCR tapes.

Comments about Sony DVDirect MC6 Multi-Function DVD Recorder:
I purchased a DVDirect MC6 and would like to transfer tape from Sony Camcorder to DVD. Unfortunately, first DVD disc was not observable. Secon DVD disc picture looks OK, but sound is terrible though my tape has very good quality. I am still working on it now to see whether I can make a nice DVD disc. According instruction USB cable should work, but actually it does not work. I have to use vedio cable instead. Sony website does not provide any trouble shooting help.

Ordered the MC6 to copy over all my VHS Home movie tapes. So far the coping is easy and straightforward. Find a VCR, put it on a table and connect the audio/video wires to the MC6. Set MC6 to your format i.e. std play, Hi Quailty etc. Just what I was looking for.

Works perfectly , flawless. Transferred all my home movies. I can't believe the price. For the people that have problems, they just don't know what there doing. It's because they are doing something wrong and blaming the unit. Disregard the stupid comments like noisy, and takes a long time. Very well built for less then 200.00. I can't believe
how fast the disc is finished. My computer takes forever.

The thing I love best about this product is how easy it was to copy my digital video cassettes to a DVD. I have about 20 cassettes of family and of my grandson's birth, now I can make copies for everyone to enjoy.

I am trying to copy a VHS to a DVD using this unit, but all I get is "No Signal". I don't have a camcorder, and this is all it says in the booklet to do, but it is only with the camcorder.
This is not what I wanted. It is false advertising. I was on the phone with Sony and they could not answer why I am not able to copy from VHS to DVD. I have a Sanyo VCR/DVD, and I ask if this was a problem, and they said "It shouldn't be". I would like some explanation as to why I am getting the "No Signal".

I'm a legal videographer and I bought one of these DVD recorders for my deposition kit. Everything about it was perfect except for one serious feature flaw: During a DVD recording from a video camera source VRD-MC6 will stop a recording after being left on pause for 10 minutes. To resume recording will mean the creation of a new movie file. For my job this is not acceptable. The regular consumer DVD recorders I've been using for years will stay paused FOR HOURS!

Very impressed for my first 24 hour encounter with unit out-of-box. Connections were straight forward, suggest purchase of RCA Y-Cable (1-male to 2-female configuration) for connection to many VHS's single stereo outputs.
Not happy at all I can not connect my Canon HD via HDMI, however for the price I am very pleased with it's performance.

Comments about Sony DVDirect MC6 Multi-Function DVD Recorder:
I bought this for my Legal Video business. I needed something more rugged than standard consumer-grade home products that can't handle being jostled in transit. This fit the bill perfectly; but I have two minor issues with product design and/or specifications. (1) It has no audio jack, so one cannot listen to the audio track(s) while recording video from a camera. (2) The video monitor displays in wide-screen, and not in standard 4:3, so the operator doesn't get a real sense of What You See is What You Get.
Those quibbles aside, I think this will work out perfectly.

Comments about Sony DVDirect MC6 Multi-Function DVD Recorder:
I have only used this product to copy photos to a DVD, but in the process it did nat take the photos off of the SD card in the order in which they were taken...hence the photos were copied in a helter skelter order. Very unimpressed and dissapointing ! Have not tried the video copy feature yet and am hoping it does a better job. The slide show that was presented was good, but music gets monotonous after several moments ! It is a goo dprodect tho and Ihop eit lasts till I get everything I want to do with it, done. I would not give this machine as a gift; so far I am dissapointed in it !

Comments about Sony DVDirect MC6 Multi-Function DVD Recorder:
Why pay someone too much money to convert those old VHS tapes to DVD when anyone can use this DVD Recorder by Sony. You don't have to be a tech geek either. With this device and a VHS player it's literally just plug and play. Unit screen shows tape as it's playing/recording. Lots of features I haven't even used but for basic copying of videos to DVD, which is what I wanted it for, it does the job...perfectly. It has already paid for itself.

Comments about Sony DVDirect MC6 Multi-Function DVD Recorder:
I found this product very helpful since I had a big stash of old VHS tapes. Also was able to connect it to an old Sony Handycam as well. Was good to copy some old cassettes (almost 20yrs old) and give them to family members. In addition you can also record from the tv. Recently copied some HBO movies onto disks for viewing at my convenience. One major flaw is that with some of the recorded disks, whether they're from [@] or Sony, is that the video would freeze or skip sometimes. When this would happen i would have re-record the whole disk over which is very time consuming

I bought this device to record 8mm tapes from a Sony Handycam. The first three tapes recorded well, but now it shows "waiting for input" when the Handycam displays a clear picture. As a result, I will have to return this device. And it was supposed to work well Sony to Sony! Right.
