For sheer utility, you can't beat the Westcott Bruce Dorn 36x48 Photo Video Kit. Hot lights, cool lights, strobe lights--this softbox accepts them all, and gives you a large (36 x 48"), even light source with plenty of punch. Cool daylight-balanced fluorescent lights make it easy to shoot perishable subjects like food and flowers (and people) safely. The shallow depth of the softbox (14") makes it a natural for cramped location shooting. This kit is equally useful for photo and video work.

Comments about Westcott BDS 36 x 48 Shallow Box Photo/Video Kit:
I really enjoy this continuous lighting for my portrait photography work. It is very easy to set up, but requires some strength when taking the softbox apart. The lighting is very soft. I like the fact that what you see is what you get with this lighting. I like to use a light meter with this for accurate exposures. The shallow box allows me to shoot in cramped spaces in peoples homes or at event locations. It stays cool the entire time. Get a cap or case for this thing when traveling. Make sure to get a good size light stand because the box is big and you don't want it tipping over. It is my favorite lighting to date.

I shoot natural light/location portraits. Like so many of us these days, I do not operate out of a studio. This light is PERFECT for the occassion I have to get an indoor portraits.
Whether a headshot, child or baby....I LOVE that it gives me that instant daylight thru a window look any time of day in the small spaces I have to work with.
I can't wait to add to my lighting collection, but until I do....this one gives me excellent single light photos.

Extremely easy to put together & take apart. I was working primarily with strobes & bought this to have more control of lighting my clients, it is fantastic! Gone is the guess work of strobes. With this light what you see is what you get & I love it! I'm selling almost all my strobes & replacing them with spiderlites. The lighting looks more natural & is a million times easier to work with since you know exactly what your image will look like before you even shoot it. Cannot praise this light enough! Best studio purchase I've made to date!

This is my first piece of lighting equipment so I am unable to compare to others. But it is a wonderful tool to start with...just set it up and you are ready to go. If you are familiar with metering and natural light this will be an easy transition.
I am using it for young children, newborns and maternity. I take it on location, so the shallow box is really helpful for travel. If you are planning on using it on location I do recommend getting a carrying bag for the whole thing...light, stand, and softbox.
I have used this about 4 times so far and it has been great. I look forward to learning some more dramatic and unique ways to use it!
