Ideal for travel, mid-range nature/wildlife and general photography, the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is a lightweight, compact all-purpose "standard" zoom lens. Equivalent to a 28-135mm lens in 35mm format, this EF-S lens brings 5x wide-angle to tele coverage to EOS 40D, 30D, 20D and Digital Rebel-series shooters.
This lens features Canon's optical Image Stabilizer technology, which provides up to 3-stop compensation for image blur caused by camera shake and slow shutter speeds. The lens has a 17 element, 12 group construction, including one double-sided aspherical element for crisp, high contrast corner-to-corner detail. A ring-type USM (Ultra-Sonic Motor) allows for both fast and silent AF, as well as full-time manual focus when in the AF mode.
Designed specifically for digital photography, the lens has specially shaped lens elements and coatings to suppress ghosting and flare, which can be caused by reflections of digital camera sensors. An exclusive optional lens hood can further reduce the incidence of flare.
Note: Only Canon Extension Tube EF 25 II and 12 II fit on this lens.
Note: Not suitable for 35mm or digital SLR cameras with image sensor bigger than APS-C size. Only fits on the EOS Digital Rebel series, or 50D, 40D, 30D and 20D SLR cameras.
Note! White Box merchandise comes supplied in a plain white box, instead of the manufacturer's colorful packaging. It still includes all the manufacturer's accessories. It is original equipment, not refurbished.

Comments about Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Autofocus Lens (White Box):
This is my do everything lens. I wanted a lens that would accommodate 90% of my shooting and chose this to go with my Canon 7D. I have used it extensively to shoot interiors, landscapes, and exteriors. It looks tack sharp at all focal lengths. For sports I go to a little longer lens. The build quality is excellent and compares favorably to my Nikor optics on my film outfit, an F100. I highly recommend it.

Comments about Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Autofocus Lens (White Box):
Very Useful lense. If you only use one lense, this one goes nicely wide, and has a moderately decent zoom. It is now my go to lense.
Good value for the price as well.

Comments about Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Autofocus Lens (White Box):
The optical stabilization and zoom range, 17mm-85mm, makes this a really great lens for everyday use. The auto-focus is extremely fast! The only drawback is the slow maximum aperture, f4. This lens has a permanent home on my Canon 50D. A lens hood should be a standard accessory.

Comments about Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Autofocus Lens (White Box):
I was looking for an all around lens for my new T2i. Because it has a narrower zoom range I thought this lens would best my Canon 18-200. It has great clarity for most uses but the macro area is lacking. The macro in my Canon G11 is far superior to this lens, which is surprising considering the lens cost nearly as much as the whole G11. I was pondering the Canon 15-85 but couldn't swing the extra $$. But I may go there when I can afford it. I Love the Canon brand but I must admit I expected a little more from this lens than it delivered.

Needed a walk around wide angle zoom that I can use for casual photos. Inside at family events it's great on my crop camera. Sharper than expected.

Good walk around lens. No lens creep like the newer 15-85mm
Feels solid, gives good images, lightweight, fast autofocus.
$300 less than 15-85mm

Comments about Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Autofocus Lens (White Box):
I bought this lens for use with a polarized filter. I like the lens but didn't understand that (white box) meant no factory box or comfort case for the lens, so...take really good care of it cause its on its own! Its heavy but I like the range vs the standard lens that comes with the canons.
Comments about Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Autofocus Lens (White Box):
This lens has great range and takes great photos. It is a good lens for someone who is a beginner at taking photos
