Cullmann Magnesit 550 Aluminum Monopod - Supports 18.7 lbs (8.5kg)
The Cullmann Magnesit 550 Monopod is an intelligently-designed mobile support for use with large SLR cameras and the large, bright telephoto lenses professionals often use, such as a flagship-class SLR with a 300mm f/2.8 lens. Even when using smaller items, the large maximum tube diameter can benefit your image sharpness in tough conditions. It extends to ~5', collapses to ~18", and has a 28mm maximum diameter upper tube.
The 550's named the 'Magnesit' because of its extensive use of magnesium in the casings and fittings. Magnesium's a light and stable metal, helping to contribute to the quite tolerable weight of just 1.4 pounds, an excellent number for this size of aluminum-based monopod.

This does exactly what I wanted it to. The 5 star rating is reflective of that, not of an overall rating for all monopods on the market - there are certainly many out there that would be much better, I am sure
I wanted something cheap and portable yet reasonably reliable, to have with me when I don't feel like lugging my tripod around - or, more precisely, taking the time to set it up.
So far it served me great on a couple of photo hikes. It is solid enough that I am never worried about the camera, and it can even be used (albeit gently) as a walking stick, if you prefer to keep it extended.
I like the grip and the quick releases. It would probably work great if you add a reasonable ball head to allow portrait orientation shots as well.

I use this monopod w/the Oben BA-0 head.
the quick release leg locks are oversize and easy to use. The legs release quickly and smoothly. the rubber foot allows for pivoting with no slipping.
Very good value. Solid quality build.

I bought this for myself to make using my Canon EOS 7D a bit easier, and it is perfect. While it won't replace my tripod for long exposures or while my 400mm telephoto lens is attached, it is a great addition for travel purposes especially.

This is a really good monopod. I have tried out many monopods that just dont make the cut. Most monopods dont tighten correctly but this one deffinately tightens enough to hold a heavy load. Be careful though, when tightening clamps for th first time, I tightened one far too tight without thinking and as a result, the clamp cracked and broke (managed to repair it). My error ofcourse. Great monopod and easy to use

I shoot using some heavy lenses both still and video through a Canon 5d mark 2. This monopod is sturdy and light and easy to adjust. It folds quickly and nicely for rapid movement when shooting action or having to cover distances.

This monopod is a step above the rest with its 5 section design that folds into a small lightweight package for carrying, yet can handle a heavy camera.
The leg locks were thoughtfully designed with an adjustment tool that can tighten the locks should the legs start to slip,like on my old monopod.
Well thought out design.
