Rosco's Strobist 55-Piece Filter Kit has most, if not all, of the color filters you'll ever need for your on-camera flash, sized perfectly (1.5x3.25") for portable camera-mounted strobes. Working with David Hobby, founder of www.strobist.com, Rosco put together a collection of 20 different Cinegel colors (including different strengths of several colors) for a total of 55 gels that cover nearly every situation where you need to filter your on-camera flash for color balancing with non-daylight sources, to change your strobe's output, and or to add a color accent.

Chances are if you're looking at it, you know what this is and why you want it already. It's a great solution - despite costing more, it's easily better to get this than to try to find the free gel sample kits. The main reason is that you get multiple copies of the most useful gels, which would mean getting several gel swatch books before (or buying full-size full-price gels and cutting them... which is of course the best solution). However, I do feel that it's overpriced.[...]Is it extremely valuable to the photographer using small flashes? Yes... but like most photography gear, when you actually look at what it is you're buying it feels overpriced. Also, while the package they come in is nice enough, it's not really practical for storage unless you rarely plan on using them. You'll have to come up with another way to store your most-used gels. Likewise, you'll need to come up with your own way to mount them on your flashes (of course, just gaffer taping them on works, but that's fussy). Finally, I'm not entirely satisfied with the selection here. The primary ones are fine, but the "special effects" choices are a little bland. I guess you can't go wrong with the basics as given here, but when I recently wanted to use some "special effects" gels for lighting a background, I ended up having to dig up my old sample swatch packs to find a color I liked. I guess I can't fault them too much for that, it's a matter of personal taste, and the choices here will certainly be useful for most situations.Overall though, it's invaluable if you use small flashes, and more convenient than hacking apart swatch books.

This is an extended selection of camera flash filters. I suggest to get their filter holder (which may not be great deal for its price but useful). The problem with the filters is that they come with nice, scientific transmission characteristic curves on an extra sheet of paper. As soon as you mix them up (which happens at the first time use) you have no clue of what is what. I would better buy less, targeted (needed) filter that can be identified after frequent use.

Love the price. Ok, it's just plastic films but very useful. I have a Canon 430EX II flash. I found that I could stuff the filters inside a flash diffuser, or inside a home-made snoot. They stay put that way - no need for tape.
I took some pictures indoors under tungsten light - so I added the orange filter, and set the white balance on tungsten. Wow - what a difference. Usually the subject of the photos have that deer caught in the headlight look (washed out, and different color than everything in the background). Now everything matches... perfect.

Comments about Rosco Strobist 55-Piece Filter Kit:
Really great small kit of colors. A practical selection which seems well thought out, however, they could have left out the ND which I'll never use. Happy to find the kit includes multiples of each, and each with its specific chart. Dimensionally large enough to cover the entire flash lens, unlike the Rosco samplers we've all seen and thought about using. Good for dramatic background lighting.
Rosco product quality is extremely good. Their gels are consistent, very well engineered and seem pretty durable.
Glad I bought this kit and will get another when I lose enough pieces from this one.

they are great to add color or correction to your flash and and very durable .... keep the case and tie it with a rubber band to make sure they do not open and spill all inside your bag

I don't really need these gels too often but they're sure fun to play with, especially in combination with the Morris mini strobes. I'm looking forward to more creative shots by combining these gels with various white balance settings.

These are perfect for light painting. I have not used them for the intended purpose with a flash, however the information that came with each filter is very educational. I have already recommended them to friends. Happy Light Painting!

Comments about Rosco Strobist 55-Piece Filter Kit:
This kit is an inexpensive way to get started using gels on small flashes. Changing the color of your strobes really adds a new dimension to your images. My only criticism would be that the gels could be a little larger. When putting them on a 580 EX II, they barely cover the entire face of the flash. Still, compared to buying a swatchbook with holes and only one of each gel, this kit is a good choice.

If you are looking at this product then you already know what it is. Just buy it already and get it over with. Better yet, add the gel holder to your cart as well, and dont forget the speed strap to attach to your camera.
Its not something you use every day but its something you need in your bag if you want to make decent pictures into great pictures, correcting for light and adding color to you scene. Its one of the cheapest pieces of equipment you can buy and can have a large impact on your photos.

Comments about Rosco Strobist 55-Piece Filter Kit:
Anyone who does flash photography in any conditions other than noon-day sun and wants their photos to look more professional than a standard point and shoot quality, needs this kit. I've been working primarily indoors, at bars, clubs, concerts and other similar venues where lighting can be all over the map, but with this kit, you are truly covered. If you want your subjects to have skin-tones that look natural and not washed out relative to the (almost always) warm incandescent background, you have to color correct your flash and this kit offers all the different grades of color correction you could possibly ever want. I've also used the pale gold special effects filter to get a more flattering skin tone in more standard lighting conditions, as well. The only drawback with the kit, is there are no markings on the gel strips. I took a pen and wrote what was what as I unpacked them, so I won't drop them all at some point and get confused. All in all, this is an essential product with a fairly minimal price, considering how much it can elevate the quality of your photos.
