I read reviews on numerous web sites (including this one) about this camera before I bought it. A friend has an Olympus Tough; we also own a Panasonic Lumix (not the shock-proof one); and bought a Canon digital point-and-shoot for my father. Frankly, after all my research, I couldn't find a cuter, better camera for the money.
Based on some of the other reviews, you'd expect grainy pictures, especially at low light; a short battery life; and a few other shortcomings. All I can say is: People, it's a point and shoot camera. Not only that, it takes great pictures in most point-and-shoot situations (daylight of any kind, indoors, well-lighted). And it's the cutest little camera around. We haven't tested the video function yet, but if we had wanted a video camera, we'd have bought a video camera. (The battery life complaint is kind of true. Buy an extra one.)
This was a birthday present for my wife, who walks the dog in all weather and sometimes wishes she had a camera with her. Our DSLR is too heavy to carry on long walks with the dog, and requires both hands to get a shot. The Optio was the perfect choice: inexpensive, able to handle the temperatures and moisture of a Michigan winter, excellent optics for a camera this size, and enough modes, options and electronic gismickry to satisfy the camera geek, while still being an easy-to-use point and shoot camera. And did I mention that it's cute? My wife's favorite color.
She's had it for two weeks and carries it with her everywhere.
Bottom line: I looked at all the competition, and it's simply the best package for the money. And it's cute as a button.

I'm primarily a casual photographer at this point, taking pictures of the family while on vacation, etc. I bought this camera for a vacation to the beach and Disney World, so I would have something I could keep in a shirt or pants pocket without being paranoid about getting splashed by an errant wave or getting sand in the zoom lens, etc. The camera performed well under these conditions (including wading waist deep into the ocean with it in my pants pocket). The LCD is a bit difficult to see in bright sunlight, and the camera has no optical viewfinder. The camera has a semi-bewildering array of modes available, and features such as face recognition and eye closure detection. The camera also has quite noticeable and somewhat annoying shutter lag (making it difficult to get those action shots), which I suspect may be related to all those features being packed into such a small camera. Overall, it is a handy size camera which is sealed and sturdy enough to be taken into fairly extreme conditions without being paranoid about destroying it, so I would recommend it for hiking, the beach, swimming, rafting, etc. (although it does not float, so if you're taking into deep water secure it or get a floating strap).

Comments about Pentax Optio W80 Digital Camera (Azure Blue):
I've only had the camera for a few weeks, and have mixed feelings about it:
- took some fun pictures in our pool at night, which came out surprisingly well with flash
- but then tried to take pictures of my son at the podium giving a speech in a banquet hall. I was only about 15 feet away, but camera could not focus at all on him - I got total garbage.
Have not yet had a chance to test in other situations.

I used the camera while snorkeling in Hawaii. I must admit I was skeptical when I first walked into the ocean wake. Underwater picts were very good and landscape picts were higher quality than I expected. I was not disappointed that I did not have my slr with me that morning. If one was going to spend several hours under water shooting, one would need to have 2 or 3 extra batteries.

Bought this camera for camping/hiking/canoeing - needed something rugged, full-featured yet compact and light. So far, very pleased. Image quality is fair/good. Quick start up, the 2.5" screen is clear/crisp. Tripod mount would be better if centered on bottom of camera. Would prefer alkaline/AA batteries to the rechargeable lithium ion, especially when out in the wilderness.

This is my fourth pentax waterproof camera and by far the best. the camera is light, has a fast focus, little lag time and takes picture comparable to many more expensive point and shoot digitals. A view finder would be a great addition but for the money this camera is a good choice.
I use it as a back up for my slr on long trips and when I am on or in the water.

Comments about Pentax Optio W80 Digital Camera (Azure Blue):
I wanted a camera I could take everwhere - without the bulk of a DSLR. The W80 is waterproof and shock resistant - so I thought the camera would be good for our senior citizens photography class. The camer is easy to carry - the non-protruiding lens is a great feature for seniors (less likley to break the lens) and being shock proof is a valuable bonus.
However - I find that one must keep the ISO no highter than 200 or the noise is unacceptable. The lens is not as good as a Nikon competator, but "good enough"
Overall it is a good camera for travel, senior citizens and those wanting an easy to use vacation camera.

It's a really great camera and took excellent pics outside, but some of the settings (such as the pet setting) don't really do too much... I found it easier to take most pics on auto mode, which is fine. The camera's also a bit stubborn indoors. But so far I'm loving it!

I HAVE NOW HAD 2 OPTIO WATERPROOF PENTAX CAMERAS- THE FIRST FAILED AFTER SURFACE SNORKLELLING - IT WAS AFTER 10 MONTHS AND STILL ON WARRANTY SO WAS REPLACED. THAT ONE ONE FAILED ALSO AFTER SNORKELLING- JUST AFTER ONE YEAR- PENTAX WON'T REPAIR/REPLACE.
VERY DISAPPOINTING.

I've always been a Nikon D user, however. this has been a perfect pocket camera. The dust and water resistance is a must for a great camping camera. It does have a lag but the movie feature makes up for slowness.

We recently took our W80 to Hawaii with us and took at least 250 pictures and some video. It was easy to take care of, just a simple rinse and soak and it was ready to go. Battery fully charges in a couple of hours and the extra zoom is a bonus. So far we are very happy with it.

We bought this camera because it doesn't have to be handled gently. It should be able to get wet and be dropped and still work. We haven't tried dropping it yet, but we have tried it as an underwater camera. What fun!!! We were just in a swimming pool, but it works and takes a great picture. For people photos, the smile focus feature seems to work. If I had to buy a point and shoot digital camera for someone else, I would buy this model. Oh, and the Azure Blue color is an extra bonus.

Was looking for a water resistant pocket sized camera to take on my fishing and hunting trips as well as trips to the beach. Compared many makes and models and decided this one best met my needs including the high resolution.
The only thing I wish it has would be a lens cover of some sort to protect the lens when bouning around in the boat. Since it does not have a lens cover, I keep it in a small neoprene case when not in use.

I like the Optio W series cameras. They take a good picture, are quick enough and are waterproof. This is great for someone near water, canoeing, kayaking and in the rain.
My Optio W30 is still going although the LCD is failing on the left part of the screen.
Its too bad the batteries between the 30 and the 80 are not the same.
