This is the real McCoy. If you're after a battery grip that is of the same high build quality as your Pentax K-7, then this is your only choice. Conversely, if all you need is the convenience and functionality that a battery grip provides, then you can save a bundle by buying a 3rd party clone grip. This OEM Pentax grip is, frankly, overpriced for what it is; on the other hand, none of the plastic alternatives presently on the market are as good, so, there's the rub...
The only negative for me with the D-BG4 (other than its high price point) is the lack of an internal slot to store my little Pentax remote. I upgraded to the K-7 from a K-10D. I really liked that I could stash both an extra SD card AND my remote inside the K-10D's grip. The smaller size of the K-7 - and thus, of the D-BG4 grip - is probably why Pentax designers couldn't make room for any remote control storage slot. Too bad: the remote is easy to misplace; having it at hand in the battery grip was a great convenience that I'll miss.
Otherwise, if the price isn't an issue for you, buy this grip. You won't be disappointed.

Cons It only holds one battery. You can put a battery in the camera also but then to charge that battery you have to take the grip off the camera to get to it.

Comments about D-BG4 Battery Grip f/ Pentax K-7 & K-5:
I purchased this grip as I was heading away for the weekend and required additional battery support. I filled 2 32gig cards with more than 1000 RAW images and I am still showing battery as full. The additional shutter release and control dials are great, I would happily recommend this product as it turns what I would consider an already pro body into a truly PRO kit.
AWESOME - this camera + grip is a weapon.

I have tried 3rd Party "cheaper" grips. They work...for a minute that is! The Pentax brand has lasted...making it worth the extra money. I'm a handicapped photog and using this grip accessory gives me more camera to hold on to, especially for the vertical shots.

Comments about D-BG4 Battery Grip f/ Pentax K-7 & K-5:
This grip is excellent for use wherever extended battery life is needed, such as weddings. It also helps balance the relatively lightweight K-5/K-7 bodies when used with heavy DA* lenses such as the 50-135 and 16-50 f2.8. The controls are well laid out and precisely mimic those on the body itself, so it is very comfortable to use in portrait mode. The weather sealing is also a nice bonus and the storage compartments for the rubber plugs are well-designed and secure.
The one con I have noticed is that one needs to be very careful to not overtighten the screw when attaching the grip as doing so can make it very difficult to remove. However, I have found it takes very little torque to adequately secure the grip to the body, so that is no longer an issue.
Overall this is an excellent product and one that looks right at home on the K-5 and K-7.

Comments about D-BG4 Battery Grip f/ Pentax K-7 & K-5:
Much better quality item than after market grip, weather sealed unlike after market and better response from buttons and dials. Much longer power supply by using two batteries. Battery selection is selectable once the grip is installed, grip first, auto, body first etc. Handy storage for 2nd SD Card. Much more comfortable vertical (and horizontal) hold, especially for those with medium to large hands. AA tray handy but I wouldn't ever use myself. Holds tight to Body of camera and includes a tripod mount. Camera is much better weighted with grip installed. Only cons would be the camera does not access the SD card from the grip, merely a storage slot (not really a problem) Doesn't hold remote like K20D grip, but heh? Highly recommended. Great price from B&H of course. Don't bother shopping around!

I bought this for the added size. I bought a K5 a few months ago, and always found it just a little too short for my liking. Now I have somewhere for my pinky to go. The camera feels so much better with this. The extra controls all work just like the ones on the camera body. I am happy with this purchase.

Solid construction! The grip is metal and built very well. The weather sealing gives me peace of mind when shooting in sketchy weather. It extends the comfotable but slightly too small K5 grip to a perfect length and size. The option to use AA batteries is excellent for a backup option. I think its worth it to get the authentic Pentax version. Love it!

it's a very good extension for the Pentax K5:
- more weight - less shake
- good overall stability
- 2 batteries never run out of power during a day
- flexible because of the AA battery container allows the use of standard AA batteries
- all necessary knobs are available also for portrait position
- good support due to a good shape and good rubber material

I was considering a clone for a battery grip but boy am I glad I didn't. Not to mention possible warranty issues, but out of all of them, only the Pentax one was weather resistant.
I love that the controls on the grip mimic the ones on the body, but even better, you can turn off the power switch on the grip to keep from accidentally changing your settings with the front e-dial, then turn it on when you are using it vertically. Used it with a K-5 and loved it.

Comments about D-BG4 Battery Grip f/ Pentax K-7 & K-5:
So far I have used only alkaline batteries in the grip and they work fine, especially when you put all six in.(that is what I get for being in a hurry and not paying attention) It does not completly function with just four but it works enough to make you wonder if you got a bad part.
Like I said in the headline, it is quality! It has a heft to it and does add a bit of weight to your camera but is not really that heavy. Someone at Pentax was thinking, they even have a place for the protective cap from the grip and the plug from the camera to go in between the grip and camera body! Very handy so as not to loose them. The only thing to get used to is turning off the grip switch when shooting horizontally because if you are not paying attention to where your hand is while setting up the shot, you sometimes bump a button or roll a wheel on the grip and it of course changes setings for you. I mainly got it for the extra battery life but when I installed it, I am really liking the comfort of shooting vertical with the shutter release and other main function buttons in a familiar location.

Comments about D-BG4 Battery Grip f/ Pentax K-7 & K-5:
I've tried an analogue noname brand battery grip before purchasing this. Big change. Don't waste your money and efforts for trying something different than the original battery grip. The differences are so elusive at first glance but so important totally when you actually use your camera not as a toy but as a tool. Solid quality feeling, adds some wieght to the whole combo, but it's just perfectly fine to me.
Shooting verticals is very convenient now. And I don't have small palms and fingers - so the overall handling is super, too.
The dial wheels have a rubber finishing coat, all the buttons are placed on the right places (so you won't push them accidentally) and have a right "deep" sound when you press them which adds to the to the overall hefty feeling.
The whole combo assembled with some big lens mounted looks very serious when you need that look. Bit still fits in my favorite small photo bag to walk around Tamrac Explorer2. It was impossible with other cameras with the battery grip attached even with small lens.
With 2 or 3 sets of six AA Enenloop rechargeables I'm very confident in my energy resources for a full working shooting day (2000-2200 shots including LiveView focusing with the SR on, 30-40min of video and the screen is always on to check the pictures for focus and exposure), plus I can always grab AA Lithiums or Alkalines in any store.
The Lithium tray does accept only one battery. And has a place to store an SD card. But I don't use it anyway.
All in all: a must have for a Pro/Semi-Pro user.

I bought this for my husband for an upcoming camping trip in Uluru, Australia. He is loving the extra power his K7 now has to take another few thousand shots and the versatility of the power pack using either AA batteries or the Lithium one.
Alas, because the power pack is K&/K5 compatible, I think he is now looking into a camera upgrade !

Aside from adding an extended source of power, it balances the K-5 when the longer lenses are attached, plus, it makes shooting vertical format images easier by providing the extra grip surface and duplicate controls. Its quality matches that of the K-5 and it fits perfectly.

I added this to my k-5 as I can have AA lithium back-up when needed. I have had the recharge-ables in previous experience not be charged as expected. AA lithiums are available almost everywhere so i can grab them in a pinch.
