I am using this drive as a back-up drive interfacing with Time Machine on my MacBook Pro.
I am really impressed by the amount of memory that can be packed into a small package these days. This drive is tiny compared to my old external hard drive and has three times as much memory. Awesome.
Rugged construction is definitely a key feature for a drive that will be traveling with me.
Triple interface is really key for me because I do video work and want fast transfer speeds to avoid errors.
Powering off of the computer that it is plugged into is great for simplicity, though I would like the option of having the drive plug into the wall as well.
Of course the ultimate feature, is the ability to store information and not fail. Only time will tell if I bought a drive with or without a manufacturing defect of some sort. Seems to me that basically any drive is a gamble at this point. Most of them will be fine, some will have defects and will fail and you lose everything on the drive. I decided to go with this particular drive because it has a good reputation and hopefully this specific unit ends up being fine.
So far, everything about it is great and I would absolutely recommend it.

Bought the most "RUGGED" drive out there for dumping footage from my P2 cards while on location shoots. Worked fine about 9 months. [...] So I voided the warranty to access the internal drive to get to my "lost" files" which I'd lose a full days pay reshooting. The internal drive works fine on my own internal hook ups via usb2 to my mac pro. Turns out the drive connection to the I/O ports was lose. Thought I had fixed it [...] So I'm going to to remove the internal drive and buy another enclosure and toss the all so "rugged" case. For those interested...when they say rugged, its about six 1/8inch rubber cubes around the drive. Real rugged!! ha what a joke.

We are in the process of upgrading the OSs on our PCs and Macs. This portable HD has plenty of storage capacity, especially with Mac OS that are very large.

Comments about LaCie 500GB Rugged Triple Interface Portable Hard Drive:
Over the years, I've had two drives go bad after an accidental drop. The LaCie Rugged is a great idea to help safeguard against this type of thing. I haven't actually dropped the drive, and and have no plans to test it in that manner. For the most part, I'm happy with the drive, it's attractive, feels very solid and well built. The only downside to the drive I've noticed is that the thing runs hot at times, especially if I leave it plugged into my mac G4 tower when I'm not using it (might be a problem with my machine) - so I try to unplug it when not in use. What I've noticed is that when it is hot, it's best to unplug it and let it cool down. I've also experienced the drive, when hot, will give me an error when writing files to the drive. Once the drive cools down, I can write the files without any problem. I purchased this drive to store files so I can use them both at home and work. As long as I don't leave the drive plugged in all the time, it works just fine.

I use this ext drive for various mixing sessions at different locations.
Its easy to setup, having the triple interface makes it extremely versatile.
Because of its 7200RPM disks and FW800, accessing all my files takes no time at all.

This product will be used for class video projects so the fire wire 800 really speeds up the transfer rate. It was simple to format and relatively fast on a mac. The included cables covers just about all possible needs you may have. The price was reasonable and I received my item the next day.

The product works well. Unfortunately, the setup software is not currently Lion (10.7) compatible, so I had to setup and format the product on a Snow Leopard machine.

Obviously its working for me!
I mostly use these drives to store video projects: dailies, selects, the entire FinalCut and ProTools folders, and final outputs.
They are super easy to use, plug and play.
And so far they have all held up well.

This drive has been a good little work-horse. The only thing I can say is that I wish it came with an AC adapter. There are times I think you can do with a little more power.

Comments about LaCie 500GB Rugged Triple Interface Portable Hard Drive:
I use this disk as a personal backup. it also contains my bootable clone.
I am using the disk with SUPERDUPER, iPARTITION & iDEFRAG. This is my second LaCie Disk. Because I have MACS at two different locations, I can now leave the big heavy Lacie Quadra2 at one location and travel to and use the much smaller and light weight Rugged 500 at the second.
Both drives, by the way are equipped with Firewire connections which I use in preference to USB 2.0. I have found that the LaCie products are of high quality, reliable and were available at comparatively low cost. Support from LaCie has been excellent.
I would recommend This unit and all of the LaCie units to all of you folks out there. BTW, I have no connection with either LaCie, The software people or B&H Photo other than as a pleased customer.
Am crafting a stand to position the unit vertically for better cooling. would be nice for LaCie to offer a small snap-together standbut not a serious con.

I'm very happy with this external drive. I haven't literally dropped it to test its ruggedness, but so far the drive has survived a bunch of shocks, which are inevitable when I travel. As far as I am concerned the drive has passed my reliability test. It's been more than a year since I bought it. I've been using it with a MacBook Pro and it's just fantastic. Easy, reliable. I will buy it again.

Just got back from filming a wildlife documentary. Two drives worked fine in desert conditions, including the very bumpy road trip to get there.
Used these to review / edit DVCPRO-HD (100 mbps) footage on a 15-inch Macbook Pro without external power. Internal shock mounts meant one less problem to tackle.

Comments about LaCie 500GB Rugged Triple Interface Portable Hard Drive:
I've bought my LaCie Rugged drive for storing family photos and video. 500GB of storage is more than enough for the amount of information I have. What I cared the most when choosing the drive was the safety of the data. In that respect this model is just perfect with its rugged design. Besides this drive is very functional, portable, and quite attractive.
