The Nikon CoolPix S70 is a compact, narrow-profile point-and-shoot digicam that along with its pocket-friendly design features a 12.1 megapixel CCD sensor and a bright, 3.5" OLED Touch Panel screen that allows you to adjust the exposure and tonal values, as well as focus the lens and fire the shutter by merely tapping on the camera's screen.
The S70's 5-way Vibration Reduction (VR) system compensates for up to 4-stops of camera shake when shooting at longer shutter speeds. The S70's VR system also increases the camera's shutter speed and adjusts the sensor's ISO sensitivity levels as needed under low-light conditions (up to ISO 6400). For trickier shooting scenarios, the camera's Best Shot Selector (BSS) automatically captures up to 10 rapid exposures and selects and saves the best of the lot.
Aside from terrific still images, the CoolPix S70 can also capture 720p video clips @ 30fps with sound, which can be played back on your computer or TV for all to enjoy.
In the creative department, the S70 features an Auto Scene Selector, which can automatically detect up to 16 picture scenes and set the camera accordingly. And for shooting portraits, the CoolPix S70 features a 3-level skin softening mode, in-camera red-eye reduction, Face-priority AF for up to 12 faces, as well as Smile Shutter and Blink Warning functions to ensure everybody is smiling and wide-eyed in every picture.
By using the touch screen sliders in various scene modes, images can be modified as desired. You can also take advantage of Nikon's Best Shot Selector (BSS), which automatically captures up to 10 images, and then selects and saves the best picture of the bunch

We bought this camera in large part to the attractive advertising. However, it has lived up to the initial promise with the only slight flaw in our experience due to the shutter lag when relying on computer in the camera to decide when to take the picture.
First of all, this is an impressive camera because of the OLED display- and the touchscreen software that runs the camera. touching the screen to focus on an area and take the picture is a new and exciting way to interact with your photography. The screen is large and clear and makes framing and taking pictures fun and exciting. The pictures turn out quite well. The face recognition technology is also quite impressive.
The only issue I have with this camera [and this certainly is not a new {or uncommon} complaint for digital cameras - is that when it is on full auto- there is a significant delay between pointing on the touch screen and the camera releasing the shutter to capture the image- the smile that you thought you were getting- has gone. Pressing the shutter release button on the top of the camera [old school style] is faster- but the delay when using all of the new tech that this camera has is disappointing to say the least. When not in this computer intensive mode- the delay is actually pretty good [short] for a comsumer grade point and shoot digital camera.

I had great difficulty keeping my fingers away from the touch screen zoom.
I returned mine. I wanted something simple and reliable.

Comments about Nikon CoolPix S70 Digital Camera (Black):
Bought this as a refurb camera for a friend, who destroyed at least 5 cameras in a row- the issue was he is working in dust environment and the cameras with telescopic objective just would stop working after while- jammed due to dust.
This camera seems to be holding good, considering it has only 1 moving part- the door (which coolpix written on it- which is you use to turn the camera on and off). It has some nice features packed - smile detection (which works... kinda), live focus- the camera is trying to focus on something constantly- does eat the battery faster, and I am more used to autofocus, when you just press the button half way - so I turned it off.Panoramic photo is a cool option too.Uses rechargeable battery, which is nice for a cheap camera. Supports a lot of languages. The design of the camera is nice and fits good in your hand, touch is accurate and screen is big + for this camera. Do not think you can use this camera as a camcorder, which it is not designed for. The zoom is not a feature of this camera- it is very basic and does not really zoom that much. The quality at night is a bit grainy, but if you adjust the ISO to 200 it does the job.It does not compare to more expensive PAS cameras, but def not the worst in its price range. It is very compact and fits perfectly in the pocket.

I have had Nikon cameras for many years starting with a FM2 in 1982. I have also had a D70 for about six years. I got a S3 about five years ago for an "always carry" camera which I carried on a LA to Boston bicycle trip in 2008. The S3 recently failed after carrying it every day for five years. I replaced it with the S70 which I am very happy with. The large LCD touch screen is nice.

This camera is more like my 'Droid -- everything on a touch screen. No endless layers of obscure menus. Help at every level. What more could you ask? Also takes great pictures.

Comments about Nikon CoolPix S70 Digital Camera (Black):
My reason to buy this one was primarily that I gave my two year old Sony away, and looked for a cool gadget slide-in-shirt-pocket point and shoot camera replacement. For my more serious pics I use Nikon 5000D.
This one wins on design and functionality, plus a large crisp display.
Don't try to hold this one as most people grab their camera. In such case your fingers will be the main focus you will get. So, cut the fingers on your left hand - or try something different. Best is probably to held it with left hand thumb to the left and the left hand other fingers on the right side. A little awkward to begin with, but it works.

There's alot to learn and practice involved here. A bit tricky at first. I'm going on vaction so I'll have my first chance to really use it. It seems a bit difficult to set up. My Cannon was a quick turn on and snap while this one takes a bit longer due to setting it up for each application. I've gotten a bunch a blurry pictures so the anti shake isn't really doing it's part. Cool to use though.
