- Nikon's Scene Auto Selector eliminates the need to manually select a scene mode to match the shot, making it faster and easier to capture the moment. The Coolpix S640 uses this intelligent function to analyze the subject and surrounding setting and then automatically selects the most appropriate of the following six scene modes to achieve optimal results: Portrait, Landscape, Night Portrait, Night Landscape, Close-up, or Backlight.
- Smart Portrait System
- Nikon's newly developed Smart Portrait System provides a host of tools to ensure the highest quality portraits possible. The new Skin Softening function automatically detects and analyzes your subject's skin and then adjusts smoothness for enhanced results. Automatically finding up to 12 faces in the shot, Face-Priority Technology helps produce satisfying portraits by adjusting focus and exposure. Smile Timer releases the shutter when the priority subject smiles while the Blink Proof function captures two sequential frames and saves the one in which the subject's eyes are wide open. In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically corrects any perceived red-eye effect before saving the image to memory.

- Nikon's electronic VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake. Motion Detection automatically controls shutter speed and the ISO setting to compensate for subject movement as well as camera shake. ISO 6400 capability at any image size up to its maximum of 4000 x 3000 pixels allows faster shutter speeds when shooting in low light or capturing fast-moving subjects. Nikon's original BSS (Best Shot Selector) function automatically shoots a series of sequential frames and saves the one with the sharpest focus.

Easiest camera I have ever used. Although it lacks a remote like my older one so far I am a fan of this model. I purchased this one over the 570 for the subject tracking because I take a lot of moving photos. So far I have nothing to complain about. Buttons are easy, modes are easy, movie easy, plug and play. Wish it would have come with a battery dock to, but I purchased on in parts (ie. dock and cord separately) on another website and saved a ton of money.

I use my coolpix when I don't feel like lugging my Nikon DSLR around. The image quality is superb and it works great in low lighting situations such as concerts when you don't want the flash to go off. The biggest draw back is it takes a little time to turn on.

I bought this camera specifically for a trip out to Utah skiing. Has a "panoramic assist" setting for landscape, plus blink control for portraits. Sharp pictures, plus a very quick shutter which helps a lot. Settings can get tricky with the flash, but its just a learning curve with the camera. Overall a great point and shoot.

My hands shake quite a bit and this camera doesn't let that show. Pictures are clear and it's easy to use. The battery life has been great as well.
