- Nikon's Scene Auto Selector eliminates the need to manually select a scene mode to match the shot, making it faster and easier to capture the moment. The Coolpix S640 uses this intelligent function to analyze the subject and surrounding setting and then automatically selects the most appropriate of the following six scene modes to achieve optimal results: Portrait, Landscape, Night Portrait, Night Landscape, Close-up, or Backlight.
- Smart Portrait System
- Nikon's newly developed Smart Portrait System provides a host of tools to ensure the highest quality portraits possible. The new Skin Softening function automatically detects and analyzes your subject's skin and then adjusts smoothness for enhanced results. Automatically finding up to 12 faces in the shot, Face-Priority Technology helps produce satisfying portraits by adjusting focus and exposure. Smile Timer releases the shutter when the priority subject smiles while the Blink Proof function captures two sequential frames and saves the one in which the subject's eyes are wide open. In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically corrects any perceived red-eye effect before saving the image to memory.

- Nikon's electronic VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake. Motion Detection automatically controls shutter speed and the ISO setting to compensate for subject movement as well as camera shake. ISO 6400 capability at any image size up to its maximum of 4000 x 3000 pixels allows faster shutter speeds when shooting in low light or capturing fast-moving subjects. Got this for my wife who is not camera savvy. She like it because it is simple and easy to use. Takes very good pictures, is light and small. Everything she wanted in a camera. (I would have liked to see some more fun photo options, but the camera wasn't for me :-)

The menus are easy to access which makes changing settings fast when you need to take different pictures.
The macro mode is awesome for close-ups of plants and flowers, etc.
The zoom is ok but the images do get a little distorted.
Sometimes there is a slight delay for the camera to save a pic at high resolution.

Camera was as advertised extremely fast--little or no shutter lag. However picture resolution was poor and not clear. No setting would improve image quality. Severe purple fringing in low ligts. What a disappointment!

The camera arrived on a Monday and I left the following Friday for Africa. It's small and light enough to fit into a shirt pocket, where I usually kept it. It takes great pictures with rich colors. It's also pretty sturdy; I dropped it a couple times and it still worked fine. The rechargeable battery lasted all day.
I am pleased with how fast it turns on and processes pictures. Would I buy another one? In a heartbeat.

Bought the S640 for my wife who is always trying to get action shots. Most of the previous cameras has always left with animal tails and rears or no head. The speed and easy of taking action shots has improved 100 percent with the S640. Now she get complete bodies in action not just the ends. Thank you S640.
