Comments about Canon Pixma MP490 Photo All-In-One Printer:
I bought this printer mostly for photo printing and so far so great. I had a little trouble in the beginning getting my photos to print exactly as they look on my computer screen. After changing printer settings both on the unit and in my computer all my photos now print to my satisfaction. I would definitely recommend you use canon paper as it seems to finish better with the canon ink. Unless you are printing regular black text I would also leave the settings at maximum performance and 100% quality to get the best results from your photos. Great first photo printer especially for the price and very user friendly. Don't forget to buy your USB cable for the printer it does not come with one.

Comments about Canon Pixma MP490 Photo All-In-One Printer:
I paid [$] for this machine (instant rebate) [...] That's the price of the inkjet cartridges (more about this later) that come with the printer. I just needed a very general machine for home use. It's a pretty balanced need for scanning/copying/printing. Rare need for photos/image production. I'd guess that I print about 20 pages per week max. Setup is easy but took a bit longer than I anticipated (about 2 hours). I was stymied for a few minutes until I realized they don't supply you with the USB cord for the printer to the computer. Luckily, my old HP printer came with one and it works on this machine. The feature set is pretty sophisticated for a [$] machine. There are some settings for copy reduction/magnification, print quality and so forth. Adjusting print quality doesn't seem to have huge impact on the output. The machine footprint is reasonably small. Machine noise seems comparable to other printers. Print speed is OK for light home use. It ain't fast by any means.I've printed about 40 pages in b/w and the read-out tells me I've used 20% of the cartridge capacity. YIKES! With ink usage like this I'm gonna switch to draft mode for printing, use Times Roman font (the most readable/ink saving font) and any other trick I can find to cut ink costs. Like buying a color laser printer so I only use the scan/copy mode. But overall, it works very well. If ink were less expensive, I'd give it 5 stars. If anyone can recommend a refill service for less, I'd appreciate it.

This printer is a great value for the price, and we've been very happy with the design of it as well. I was pleasantly surprised that the printer came with ink! I also love that all of the buttons are protected under the LCD cover from my curious toddlers. I also like that the printer tray can stay closed and automatically opens when printing. Again, this works well with little children. The print quality also seems to be very good.

Comments about Canon Pixma MP490 Photo All-In-One Printer:
Reviews on newly purchased products are not nearly as helpful as reviews about well used equipment. However, this Pixma was on drastic clearance (a big plus), and scans, prints and copies fine. It probably drinks ink profligately but as I bought it mostly for scanning (already had a printer and don't do much copying) that doesn't worry me unduly. It is reasonably compact, reasonably quick and reasonably quiet. Best of all, I got it from BandH, my absolutely favorite one-stop, they-have-everything photo shop, at a fantastic price [...]In sum - buy the printer that fits your needs but get it from BandH!

Comments about Canon Pixma MP490 Photo All-In-One Printer:
I have only just received the unit but everything seems to work well. As for ink usage, THEY ALL USE TO MUCH INK!! I've owned several different brands and notice little difference between any of them. If it's a small cartridge expect fewer pages, larger, expect more. But these printers are designed for frequent fuel-ups. It is the business model chosen long ago. Please people get over this paper/mileage headache. If you want more efficient cost per print get your wallet out and get a business machine.
As for the cost of the printer B&H beat everybody on that. It has since gone up, sadly.

Comments about Canon Pixma MP490 Photo All-In-One Printer:
I use this as my every day, at-home printer. For the price, it is an absolutely GREAT multi-purpose printer. I've favored Canon inkjets for years - I've always liked the individual cartridges for each color & black. Because there were no 64 bit drivers for my older printer and scanner, I upgraded to the MP490 (tradeoff 1 color cartridge & 1 B&W cartridge) - figuring I would be compromising printer resolution and quality. But for every day color printing and the occasional photo print, this multi-purpose printer works fine. If I was going to print primarily photos, I would get a higher end Canon Pixma - but this one is simply fine. What made it particularly good was the [$] instant rebate that was offered at the time of purchase.

Comments about Canon Pixma MP490 Photo All-In-One Printer:
This is an absolutely awesome product!! Our old printer was working way to hard and was getting outdated. I was purchasing a Canon G11 and looked for a printer that would give us decent 4x6 to show the family (Because people still love to hold pictures, why they don't want to come over and look at my monitor I will never know). Got the printer, set it up in 5 minutes and with no calibration I was printing 4x6's better than any kiosk or lab I have sent them to. The machine is so quiet and fast I even printed one of my artsy pictures on an 8x10 and it riviled my i9000. And the best part with discount and rebate.... they are giving me a nickel. Yes I made a nickel on the deal. Truthfully, I would have paid full price if not more after using this machine. Great image quality, awesome scans, quiet as can be and really a pretty package. Canon hits it out of the park again.
Oh yeah and now my wife can print straight from the card and not have to use any software to print. THAT IS AWESOME!!
