If you're looking for a way to capture in HD, without breaking the bank, the Panasonic HDC-SD10 High Definition Camcorder does just that. This affordable HD camcorder records 1920 x 1080i video directly to removable SD/SDHC memory cards (not included), making transfer of footage a breeze. The SD10 also acts as a digital still camera with 2.1MP still capture.
You'll benefit from a number of recording features, including 16x optical zoom, Intelligent Auto mode, and a 2.7" touchscreen LCD. Other useful features include Panasonic's Advanced O.I.S. with Active Mode which compensates for shakes, shifts, and movement for both video and still images. Other considerations worthy of note would be the built-in flash and video lights, which are key to successful low light recording. In addition, the camcorder includes a stylus pen for easier navigation of the touchscreen. The HDC-SD10 provides a solid package, with user-friendly options for the budget-conscious.

I work in television and do some side-work as an independent videographer, so I wasn't sure if I could live with a low-end consumer grade camcorder. But I can't break out the $2,500 camera everytime my 1-year old does something for the first time. So, I gambled on the HDC-SD10 and I couldn't be happier (for the price). I had previously bought the Panasonic SDR-S26 because I didn't think I could find an HD camera in my price range. The SDR-S26 was just much worse than I could have ever expected in moderate to low light. Of course B&H makes the return process as easy as possible. I then got a great deal on the HDC-SD10 for a great price with B&H [...].CONS: Be realistic! It doesn't matter that this is a full HD camera. This is a 1/6" single CCD camera. It isn't great in low light, but it is acceptable to me (and I'm picky). And adequate lighting doesn't yeild results anywhere near as good as a 3-CCD camera would. Also, I would like to see better battery performance, but it's decent at a little more than an hour. There is no headphone jack or external mic jack, but if you're looking for those kind of features for what you're shooting, you should probably move up to a pro-sumer camera in the $1,000+ range. The AVCHD format still has some maturing to do. You must have a FAST computer to do in-depth editing.PROS: I love the size and weight. I have no problem keeping the tiny camera fairly steady, which was a concern. Surprisingly, I actually like the touchscreen a lot! I prefer full manual controls on the camera, but you can't do that with a tiny camera. If you have to go through menus to change settings, the touchscreen is the way to go. The [$] AG-HMC70 has a very similar menu with no touch screen and it is a PITA! Finally, the built-in light does a decent job with subjects that are a few feet away. Can you do better? Definitely, but you'd spend almost double to see any significant improvements.

Indoor low light video appears very grainy looking.

Comments about Panasonic HDC-SD10 High Definition Camcorder (Black):
For Panasonic's most basic HD camcorder, the unit really shines both in performance and features. The only suggestion I might have would be to add some features to the software suite included in the package.

This camera surprised me immensely. When I bought it I assumed I would be getting a mediocre home video camera - I was very much mistaken. The quality of the picture, the optical image stabilization, and the number of features included amazed me. My one complaint is that the focus occasionally (very occasionally) has issues when zooming in on objects that are too close. Otherwise I was pleasantly surprised with this product.

This HD camcorder is nice. I've compared the sony and canon models and this seems to meet or exceed the other brands. You get more for your money with this model. The only thing I can say that might be a negative is the short battery life. But I would rather sacrifice a short battery life than performance for a HD camcorder. I would recommend this HD camcorder any day.

I bought this camcorder to take on a trip in July but I am currently using it to film my niece at her basketball games. This camcorder is great. There is no blur and looking at the screen the picture is crisp and clear. I haven't had time to transfer my info to a DVD yet so I hope that goes ok. I like the fact that you can review your video and catch a snap shot from that video. It helps capture a better picture of the moment. I'm really looking forward to my trip in July with this camcorder.

I use the camcorder for everyday things like kids birthday parties and other get togethers. It has worked well for me so far. Would be nice if the stills looked better, but can't complain.

Replaced an 6yr old Hi8 Camcorder with this. Great features for the price. Neat ability to track faces and adjust exposure and focus based on the faces. Touch screen works well. Very small and compact. Seems durable. Looks excellent on my 67" 1080P TV. Low light performance is not so great. My old camcorder was better. Editing software is very limited. Overall though I'm very satisfied. Would have to pay much more to get the low light performance. As long as low light performance isn't too important to you I think this is a good choice for a basic HD camcorder at a killer price.

I bought this camcorder based on pricing and features offered. I have since captured 3 of my daughter's basketball games and let me say.. WOW! HD is the way to go! I have a Panasonic Blu-Ray player and popped in the SDHC and watched the games in glorious 1080 HD. The picture is crisp and the auto intelligent mode is wonderful! It does what the manufacturer says it does. I have had no problems with it. I have not tested the snapshot capability since I have a DSLR for that. I bought mainly for HD video and the AVCHD file is glorious to view on my Sharp HDTV. I burn the AVCHD file on a DVD+R DL and am able to view on my Panasonic Blu-Ray player in wonderful 1080p up converted. This is the best bang for the buck HD camcorder out there that uses SDHC cards. Battery lasts about an hour and 20 mins which matches perfectly using an 8GB SDHC on 2nd quality level. You won't regret the video taken by this camcorder. Highly recommended.

Only use it for about 2 hours so far but it's great. Low light can be a bit grainy, but over all it works great! 8gb card give you about an hour and the batter lasts about hour and a half. Very small and compact with a ton of features. Software is easy to use. Note, it has a HDMI min slot but doesn't include a cable.

I was so impressed with the video quality of the HDC-sd10... no comparison out there to what you get from this little camcorder, when you watch it on your screen you would think it was shot with a professional camera. Just plug to the mac and transfer your shots to Final Cut. I love it.
