Bought this external drive to be used with a Mac mini HTPC setup.
I was also considering the LaCie 2TB HD Max, since it has a frontal USB port, easily used as a hub.
I chose the Seagate because it has a power savings mode, something the LaCie lacks. This is important so that the drive shuts itself off whenever I put the mini to sleep, thus leaving no noise to bother people in the room.
The drive works well, has average reading and writing speeds and, even when in use, doesn't make that much noise.

In May 2010 I bought three Seagate 2TB Expansion External Desktop Harddrives, one for my images for daily use, and two for backup (one on site, one off site). All three failed in short order. They all got replaced under warranty directly from Seagate. It took forever, but eventually new drives arrived.Of the three replacements, one was inoperable right out of the box, one is somewhat flaky, one works. The bad replacement drive got replaced under warranty, again directly from Seagate. After about another month the replacement arrived (a refurbished unit). It failed after three minutes of use.[...].Status as of now: Out of seven drives, one works, I use it daily, one is sort of working but appears somewhat unreliable, and five failed.Avoid these drives!!!!

I purchased 2 of these, one for a backup, the other for AV purposes, the first, had a broken USB plug on the electronics board located inside within a month, appears to be glued on rather that soldered, the other drive makes rather odd clicking noises, avoid buying these, the are cheap junk

Comments about Seagate 2TB Expansion External Desktop Hard Drive:
I bought this drive less than one year ago. From the first week, it made clicking sounds whenever in use. That made me nervous, but I only used it as a second back up and used it very infrequently. Now it doesn't work at all (after very little use). From now on, I will stick with WD.

I use the 2TB Hard drive for saving all the videos and pictures captured at work. It has such a great amount of memory, it seems as if it could never end. Transferring and saving files on the drive is super easy. It is worth buying.

This drive is being used to backup a large library of video files. The speed of the drive is very important to how quickly the backups can be performed and it works great. Also a quiet drive.

Comments about Seagate 2TB Expansion External Desktop Hard Drive:
After a few weeks of using this drive it started making some horrible sounds. Then MAC stopped recognising it, and now it's un-useable. Im going to have to throw it in the bin because although it's under warranty I cannot risk having all my valuable photos on a poor quality drive. My other LACIE drives and Western Digital ones are great.

Comments about Seagate 2TB Expansion External Desktop Hard Drive:
The 2TB Expansion External Desktop Hard Drive that I recently purchased is not satisfying becuase it sometimes does not work. I have to unplug it and plug it again to make it work again. Sometimes I have to plug and unplug a couple of times until it detects, otherwise, it says USB not recognized. I thought it was my laptop's fault but when I used it with my other laptop it give me the same problem. Sometimes it works fine and sometimes just needs to be unplugged and plugged again.

Comments about Seagate 2TB Expansion External Desktop Hard Drive:
From reading the tech specs it sounded like this hard drive is plug and play, but only for PC. Mac users need to format it first using Disk Utility. Once I realized that, it only took a couple of minutes and I was up and running. Otherwise, I'm very happy with my purchase. And B&H are always great.

The drive periodically ejects...never had this problem with an external drive before. Trying to decide whether to send back. Won't buy again.

Comments about Seagate 2TB Expansion External Desktop Hard Drive:
I bought this drive several months ago as a primary backup for photos and important files. I'm disappointed for a couple reasons. First, an most importantly, I hear a constant "click, click, click" sound when the drive is powered up even when not being directly accessed. This problem has me worried as I believe this drive may soon die after only a couple months of use. Second, it is extremely slow when copying data (much slower than my cheap WD My Book drive). I will never purchase a Seagate drive again.

I plugged in the drive and immediately noticed a clicking noise which only got louder once I had formatted the drive and began to save images to it. I decided this was a sign that the drive was going to die within the week, and returned it to B&H. B&H has sent me a replacement, and I'll keep a close eye on the drive. That said, I have two 500GB Seagate drives which have worked fine after two years. Not sure I would buy a Seagate drive again, but apparently this happens with other manufacturers as well.
