Comments about Pentax Optio P80 Digital Camera (Pearl):
Product exceeded my expectations. Very fast operation. Menus and controls are very easy to figure out. Love the control over what settings are remembered when shut off. Histogram feature is accurate and useful. Blue subjects are saturated beautifully. The self timer stays active until shut off, saving time dealing with menus when I'm using the tripod and doing macros.
D-Range lets me shoot bright white and dark black subjects in harsh daylight with confidence. It's hard to make highlights and shadows clip with D-Range on. I challenged the camera with the highest contrast setting and the histogram stayed nicely controlled. Colors really popped when they were adjacent to deep shadows. The camera is very easy to experiment with. The large playback histogram makes bracketing decisions easy.
Video quality is excellent, with full control over white balance and exposure compensation. Audio is clean and clear. AVI clips look fantastic on HDTV. The video format works directly in Virtual Dub and Windows Movie Maker.
Camera does fast and impressive correction of barrel distortion. 12 megapixel sensor actually delivers 12 good megapixels of detail. Noise reduction is not aggressive, so colors and details are not smudged together. Skies look particularly clear and beautiful at ISO 64.
Impressive high ISO performance in low light. A very trusty camera that I can simply use and enjoy in a variety of lighting conditions and not have to worry about adjusting. Auto ISO works well.
My only objection is some purple fringing in high contrast situations, but that's easy to handle in editing. I prefer black and white most of the time, so perfect color is not my priority. This camera makes lovely digital black and whites. You have to convert them from color manually, but that's easy.
