I purchased this drive to use at weddings to backup raw files throughout the day. It's fast, compact, and very handy. It has also become my portable drive for carrying pending albums that need to be edited, as well as finished albums that need to be moved my archive drive. Basically, it keeps my laptop drive clean and running fast. I only move photos to the laptop when I'm editing them.

I bought the 500GB 7200rpm version for the sole purpose of editing video on my MacBook Pro. Come to find out, you cannot connect a firewire camera to these mini drives! Connecting a camera unmounts the drive. G-tech claims they know this, but that the other firewire port is ONLY for connecting another hard drive. The problem is, that ALL new iMac's and MacBook Pro's have ONE firewire port. In other words, it's impossible to use this as a firewire connected scratch disk/capture drive. I asked them if I could trade this drive for a regular G-Drive which they said "has a different chipset and doesn't have this problem". They said no. I use the same camera daisy chained off my Drobo without any problems.

I writes really pretty fast but not as fast as i would like. I have been using it to write to while I'm recording music. I keeps up pretty well without working hard. It's never very warm. And it's ways smaller than i thought it would be which is awesome. and the protective case it comes with is nice.

This Drive satisfied the requirements for 7200 rpm, 800 firewire, it was fast, reliable, has lots of space, and is a good price. I would (and have) bought this more than once.

I planned to use this drive as a bootable clone of my 5 year old MacMini (first generation Intel). However, this drive is so good that the computer actually works faster using this drive, so now I actually run the Mini with the G-Tech and consider the drive in the Mini as the Backup! The old Mini runs photoshop CS5 with no problem from the G-Tech! It's powered from the Firewire port, too so no need for a power adapter. It's small enough to fit in a jacket pocket.
Yeah, I am real glad that I bought the thing! On a Mac it is truly plug and play. To make the bootable clone I use a program called Super Duper.

Comments about G-Technology 320GB G-DRIVE mini Triple Interface Portable Hard Drive:
This is exactly what I wanted when I ordered it. I needed a small, fast, bus powered drive to take with me on the road to edit stills and video and the G-Drive delivers. The aluminum case is solid and looks good next to any notebook. It also comes with a rugged, but slick looking leather case and all of the cables you will need. I don't have unlimited funds so I was looking for something with a 7200rpm drive speed with plenty of capacity and Firewire 800 at a good price. They also had a 5400rpm 500GB drive I considered, but I traded storage space for drive speed and cost.

Comments about G-Technology 320GB G-DRIVE mini Triple Interface Portable Hard Drive:
There are several portable 7200 rpm drives we use for video editing in the field. This seems to be the most dependable. HD video editing throws around a lot of data, so when we edit off a portable drive they get real warm. This drive gets the edge because the small legs separate it from the ground, helping the drive to cool down more quickly, which appears to make them more stable during transport.
At 320 GB this drive has plenty of space for a couple of projects at a time.
I'd suggest getting the optional power supply. This will help preserve laptop battery if you have AC available in the field.

As a film guy, I generally have a portable drive or two to tote around. This is the perfect size to always keep in my bag. Simple to transport around large files. Love that it's bus powered so I don't also have to drag around a power supply. Big fan of G-Tech

I use Final Cut Pro and this is the only 7200rpm drive that I have found that is light and compact enough for me to take on the go. I Have two and I am planning on getting two more

I have only used these on one job so far but the four of them performed perfectly. Anyone using P2 knows that high field transfer rates are mission critical. These drives were recommended for their firewire 800 capability, bus power, 7200 rpm speed .. all necessary to keep up with the massive data generated by P2 workflow. On a four camera shoot, four transfer stations using these drives did just that. We ran the cameras constantly on a live concert and were able to get cards offloaded an recycled so as never to miss a thing using only two 32 gig P2 cards per camera. This meant we were able to get them offloaded, reformatted and delivered back to cameras at better than 1x record time.

I have several of these G-Drives that I send to networks for editing work. They are reliable, made very well, and just the right size for transferring content. My only complaint is that the others that I bought cost $50 more per unit. This is a great deal.

This is a great external. It's durable, fast, and stylish. It's ready to use out of the box and works perfect with TimeMachine. I was able to back up 120GB using TimeMachine with firewire 800 in about an hour. Not too shabby. I would definitely recommend this hard drive to anyone looking for a high quality external drive for an extremely reasonable price.
