One of my clients phoned and said his "LaCie Big Disk" (500GB) drive wasn't working properly. He also said he ran down to his local store and already purchased a replacement, a Western Digital (WD) "My Book Essential" (1.5TB), and asked if I could install it. After setting this up, I noticed a CD icon on his iMac's Desktop. I copied the manual from this virtual CD to his internal hard drive and tried to remove it. Even a re-format (quick-erase) of the drive would not resolve this. (Later, I learned that WD states that a "firmware update" is needed, in order to remove that icon! Having a consumer resort to a firmware update, just to get rid of an icon is a crazy (not smart) bit of engineering, in my opinion!I had previously done some research on external hard drives and found Hitachi to have good specifications. (Hitachi owns G-Technology and SimpleTech)I had taken his LaCie drive with me, just in case. I did manage to finally get it running again and told him to order a new drive and have it shipped directly to me. I would transfer everything from the old to the new and then return and connect it for him. The drive I recommended is the G-Technology 1TB "G-Drive". It comes with a 3-year warranty, runs at 7200RPM, has no fan, is Mac-formatted (and "Time Machine" ready), is fairly quite, comes with all the cables you'll need, has a solid feel to it and has a semi-bright white light on the front. (The LaCie had a much-dimmer blue light, which made it a bit difficult to see when it was being accessed.)Although I had a short experience with the G-Drive, I liked it so much, I plan on buying one for myself in about 2-weeks.

I attempted to switch over to G-drives after using WD brand for many years. The specs on the drive looked powerful, and it received B&H's hearty recommendation. Upon receiving the G-Drive, however, I found that the USB port was loose and wiggly and would not mount the drive when connected to my Macbook Pro (firewire worked fine). [...] I contacted G Technology customer support, and they assured me that this was not a regular occurrence, that the drive must have been dropped or mishandled to cause the USB port to break loose from its soldering. [...] Wish I could have tested what this drive is capable of and provided comment on that, but as it is, I'm going to return this second drive to B&H and shop around for another brand.

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
I've had some problems with the mini type G-Drives,
but these mid-size high capacity drives run smoothly,
reliably, quietly. Also the G-Drive Safe RAID
dual drive is excellent if redundancy is necessary!
Install a SATA card in your PPC or Intel Mac Pro,
and see fantastic performance from these drives
using their SATA port!

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
I already have a G Technology 2TB G-Drive for my Mac, so getting one for my wife's computer was a no-brainer. The multiple cables are a plus, and I especially like the option to turn the unit off when I want. It's quiet and matches the iMac's profile perfectly. I work in TV Production and some of our clients (Nat Geo, USA Network, to name a few), also use G Technology products.

I use this product to store my video footage. It's never failed and even survived being dropped a few times. Would be neat if it was a little smaller, lighter. But otherwise serves my purpose perfectly!

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
As a video instructor, I use the G-Drive as my primary external drive when editing in Final Cut Pro. The unit is responsive and can work well as a Time machine back-up. The 7200 rpm is crucial for editing and the SATA and 8 pin firewire connections transport data quickly and effectively. It also has a USB 2 port. No problems to date using 8 different units.

An excellent, if not expensive, hard drive for hardcore video editing, backup, and data transfers. I'm cutting a short film shot on RED at 4K right now and this thing is a beast! For serious digital filmmakers who value putting a few extra bucks into the security of their work I would strongly recommend G-Drives.

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
Don't buy this unless your very serious about needing a lot of storage. I bought this because it was reliable and a requirement for class. Hopefully in the future when technology improves, hard drives that are 1 tb can be a lot smaller because this thing is huge and heavy. Thats fine though because it serves its purpose. I would like it if this was available for a student discount but it was not. :(

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
I bought this hard drive on the recommendation of my professor. I attend Emerson College for their MFA in Media Art program. Everyone around school has this hard drive because it is ridiculously reliable and unbelievably fast with Firewire 800, plus it comes Mac formatted. The hard drive is definitely not small, but it feels sturdy and looks sleek. It's the kind of hard drive you wouldn't mind leaving on your desk. Traveling with it is a bit of a pain (due to its size), but I do it frequently and it is manageable.
Storing and editing video with this hard drive could not be any easier. If you work in visual arts with very large files, this is the best hard drive for you.

This is a great stable and fast harddrive.
I own multiple types of external harddrives to backup and transfer data, mostly HD video files and this drive delivers. Great port options to connect to. Well designed.
