One of my clients phoned and said his "LaCie Big Disk" (500GB) drive wasn't working properly. He also said he ran down to his local store and already purchased a replacement, a Western Digital (WD) "My Book Essential" (1.5TB), and asked if I could install it. After setting this up, I noticed a CD icon on his iMac's Desktop. I copied the manual from this virtual CD to his internal hard drive and tried to remove it. Even a re-format (quick-erase) of the drive would not resolve this. (Later, I learned that WD states that a "firmware update" is needed, in order to remove that icon! Having a consumer resort to a firmware update, just to get rid of an icon is a crazy (not smart) bit of engineering, in my opinion!I had previously done some research on external hard drives and found Hitachi to have good specifications. (Hitachi owns G-Technology and SimpleTech)I had taken his LaCie drive with me, just in case. I did manage to finally get it running again and told him to order a new drive and have it shipped directly to me. I would transfer everything from the old to the new and then return and connect it for him. The drive I recommended is the G-Technology 1TB "G-Drive". It comes with a 3-year warranty, runs at 7200RPM, has no fan, is Mac-formatted (and "Time Machine" ready), is fairly quite, comes with all the cables you'll need, has a solid feel to it and has a semi-bright white light on the front. (The LaCie had a much-dimmer blue light, which made it a bit difficult to see when it was being accessed.)Although I had a short experience with the G-Drive, I liked it so much, I plan on buying one for myself in about 2-weeks.

I attempted to switch over to G-drives after using WD brand for many years. The specs on the drive looked powerful, and it received B&H's hearty recommendation. Upon receiving the G-Drive, however, I found that the USB port was loose and wiggly and would not mount the drive when connected to my Macbook Pro (firewire worked fine). [...] I contacted G Technology customer support, and they assured me that this was not a regular occurrence, that the drive must have been dropped or mishandled to cause the USB port to break loose from its soldering. [...] Wish I could have tested what this drive is capable of and provided comment on that, but as it is, I'm going to return this second drive to B&H and shop around for another brand.

Don't buy this unless your very serious about needing a lot of storage. I bought this because it was reliable and a requirement for class. Hopefully in the future when technology improves, hard drives that are 1 tb can be a lot smaller because this thing is huge and heavy. Thats fine though because it serves its purpose. I would like it if this was available for a student discount but it was not. :(

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
I bought this hard drive on the recommendation of my professor. I attend Emerson College for their MFA in Media Art program. Everyone around school has this hard drive because it is ridiculously reliable and unbelievably fast with Firewire 800, plus it comes Mac formatted. The hard drive is definitely not small, but it feels sturdy and looks sleek. It's the kind of hard drive you wouldn't mind leaving on your desk. Traveling with it is a bit of a pain (due to its size), but I do it frequently and it is manageable.
Storing and editing video with this hard drive could not be any easier. If you work in visual arts with very large files, this is the best hard drive for you.

This is a great stable and fast harddrive.
I own multiple types of external harddrives to backup and transfer data, mostly HD video files and this drive delivers. Great port options to connect to. Well designed.

I use the 1 TB G-Drive to back up video files. It performs well so far and I am pleased with my purchase.
I like the multiple ports the unit itself feels nice and sturdy.
I'm not sure why they include 6' cables. A 3' cables usually is plenty long, but no big deal.

I wouldn't think of buying another drive.
The only things I do not like about the newest generation of G-Tech drives is the the power supply and the on/off switch.

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
Very solid build quality and the only gripe I had with it was somewhat loud operation and definitely not very portable, but unfortunately the drive failed after about a year of serving as a backup drive. The customer service was good and they promptly sent me a replacement. Don't leave this drive plugged in permanently like I did and double-backup all the critical data as always. I've had a variety of external drives fail on me so starting to think the only solution is RAID.

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
I bought this drive to use as back-up for my project studio. It's got tons of rooms to hold the audio files (samples) my music programs need.
It does make a little noise occasionally, so although I use it for recording "in the box", I wouldn't want to do an acoustic session (with miss) in the control room while the drive was on.

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
Had purchased the 500GB G-Drive earlier for my laptop. Loved its small size and ease of use so much that I purchased the 1TB G-Drive for my desktop. Both work beautifully with Apple's Time Machine, allowing me to do automatic back ups. I am surprised that the 1TB is so much larger than the 500GB. Attractive looking so it's not an eyesore on the desk. Highly recommended. The delivery time from B&H was even faster than I expected.

I'm a video major in college. Until i purchased this hard drive, i was previously using a USB -powered drive. Now that i have firewire800, my life is much easier and my videos render faster. The size of the storage is great too. I'm constantly deleting from my laptop in order to save space, but this 1TB leaves me plenty of room for future videos and photos. My previous drive did not require additional power sources to function, the new (current) drive's cord is a slight setback - i've watched my friend trip on his power cord, which knocked his drive off the desk and broke it.

I purchased this harddrive for grad school. I'm studying media arts and looking to get my MFA. This harddrive has so much space that it will last at least my first year out of the three I'll have here. It contains my video work, my graphics, and photos. I'm glad that I got this one, in the past I've had a western digital, which was terrible. And a lacie that I loved. So I'm pleased with the results of this drive. I wish it didn't need to be plugged in, but with a large drive I understand it needs to be. It's a bot heavy as well. So I'm glad that I got this, and I ordered it on a Sunday at midnight and it was received Tuesday afternoon!! It was so fast. I'm pleased and will purchase another one when neccessary! Thanks for a great product!!!

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
I use two of these drives simultaniously for high resolution multi-track recording and editing.
This drive is whisper quiet. If you listen closely you can hear the drive spin up and obtain initial access, but when reading / writing it's virtually silent. It's fan-less, and doesn't over heat. To comment on it's form, this drive is a perfect fit to any aluminum apple product.
All potential combination of cables needed are included in the box, even an ieee adapter 800/400 cable. All you need to do is purchase the product, open it up, and use it, no fuss!
Works great in Mac and Windows. It's pre formatted for Mac so if you do use it in Windows (NTFS) just open up disk management (in windows) and delete / remake the partition until the space is "Unallocated", then format as desired. The official instructions are on the website.
The only potential downside is that you can't use a very common usb connector (type B, box type), it utilizes the mini-B type, so if you need a longer cable you probably can't expect to raid your usb cable drawer from years past to find the proper cable. Another option to lengthen the cable is to use a usb 2.0 cable extension with a male and female type-A.
I hope this was useful to you!

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
G-Technology 1TB G-Drive is partitioned and formatted for MAC(s). This is a marketing decision and perfectly fine. I'm a PC user mostly by reason of poverty. I've recommend MAC(s) to friends and started one on a MAC Book.
The problem I had with my G-Drives is the instructions for partitioning this drive for Windows XP are dead wrong. They simply DO NOT work. How difficult is it to include accurate and up to date instructions?
The Disk Management Snap-In, in the Windows XP, SP-3 Computer Management will not delete the foreign partition. This is as it should be and protects the user from accidentally deleting valuable data. The user must use an obscure command line utility called DISKPART from the command line processor. First one must list the drives on the computer with the [List Disk] command. Then you must [Select Disk] by it's number from the list. Next you [List Partition] and [Select Partition] by number to place the focus on the partition you wish to delete. Finally you can delete the partition using the [Delete Partition] command but you must include the command line argument [Override]. This command line tool is going to scare the typical computer user to death. It's best left to a Power User or Professional. Also the help included with the tool is all but useless. One must go to the Microsoft Website and open [A Description of the Diskpart Command-Line Utility] at least the first time they use the DISKPART utility.
Once the foreign partition is deleted one can proceed with partitioning the hard drive for XP. I'll note here that both current MACs and Windows 7 are using much superior partitions that are not available to Windows XP users (Please Send FREE Money). At this point everything gets easy and partitioning and formatting the G-Drive for Windows XP proceeded smoothly.
One complaint that may affect all users is the power converter and cord. The power converter is the type with the transformer and plug in one. I have to use a sort extension cord as I can't plug the block into my UPS. The power cord is too thin and could easily be damaged.
I've been using two 1TB G-drives for several months. They are connected to my PC(s) as eSATA drives and the performance is great. I'd certainly recommend these to MAC users but I can't recommend them to the typical Windows XP user.
I'm giving the product 4 stars because of the instructions.

I use this external hard drive in a classroom for video editing in Final Cut Pro. We use the firewire cable to connect it to an iMac. It's fast and reliable. So far, no lost data, crashes, etc. We liked our first one so much, we bought two more. It takes a lot of wear and tear with high school kids using it.
