The unit decodes Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, DTS, DTS 96/24, DTS-ES Discrete/Matrix 6.1, and DTS Neo:6. It also decodes the following HD audio formats: Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD Master Audio.

- This powerful receiver is Blu-ray audio compliant; it offers both DTS-HD Master Audio and High-Resolution technologies. DTS-HD Master Audio supports bitrates up to 24.5Mbps, 7.1 discrete channels of 96KHz/24-bit audio, and is ideal for HDMI Version 1.3a cables. DTS-HD High-Resolution Audio also offers 7.1 discrete channels of 96KHz/24-bit audio, but only supports bitrates up to 6Mbps.
- Logic 7 Processing
- This processing technique converts, or upmixes, 2-channel stereo signals into 5- or 7-channel audio signals, allowing you to better experience the surrounding ambient sounds that are already in the stereo mixes. It's especially designed to maintain a solid front soundstage, while expanding the perceived ambience beyond the room walls.

We replaced an anequated reciever to power multiple in-ceiling speakers throughout our home. Instead of going with a new 7.2 system we went with a 'slightly' used Harman Kardon 7.1 model. Wise allocation of funds. The product looked and smelled brand new. Installation was straight forward. Set up was a slight challenge since we were trying to create 'zones'. The directions were not 100% clear, however fellow users had posts on Google.

I bought the 1600 and hooked it up to the HKTS - 18 speaker system. I was unhappy to see is actually only 35 watts per channel, because everyone once in a while I like to crank up the volume and make my ears bleed! To be honest the lower power hasn't been an issue, and I've never turned to receiver up to max power, and it has always provided more than enough power to fill our famiy room with tons of volume when we watch TV and movies in 5.1 surround. But if you have a large room with open structure, it may not be enough juice to get the job done. I also had problems connecting my DirectTV DVR with HDMI, and had to do it with composite video cable instead. The sound produced by this machine is superior! The remote is tough to get used to, but once everything is connected and the learning curve has been overcome, it makes for a great piece of your home theater system.
