This is my first P/S in probably about 4 years. I usually have my EOS 20D or EOS 5D MII in hand, but I wanted something small that I could take anywhere via pocket transport.
I will start off with the Pros. This camera is super tiny, and will fit in just about any pocket easily. It is quiet with decent battery life for the size of it. HD video isn't what you would expect out of HD camcorder, but from a P/S camera I found it better than I thought it would be (yes they are all .MOV coming out). Self timer with face recognition works really well also. The screen is bright and vibrant, makes not having a viewfinder completely ok. There are lots of presets (portrait, sports, kids, fireworks, etc). Macro works well. The flash is adequate for things that aren't too far from the camera and for the size of the camera.
I would say that my SLRs paired with my L glass has made me slightly biased on image quality; however, this camera has a few flaws. AWB in anything other than sunlight is going to be overly warm (yellow/red). That's a fault of every Canon P/S I've ever used (especially indoors until incandescent lighting). ISO 200 and higher makes the pictures totally evident of too much NR (noise reduction) and jpeg artifact noise. The IS on it seems just about worthless. I haven't noticed any difference when having it on or off. ALL of the buttons are completely flush with the camera casing which means they can be hard to press and get the setting/menu you were looking for. The buttons are also small (small camera though) so anyone with larger fingers will have problems with it. The port cover for the mini-hdmi and usb is super flimsy platic. It will break off if you aren't careful. Pin-point focusing without the focus assist in less than sunlight is hit and miss (usually a miss).
Final thoughts . . Comparing the photo quality of this camera vs any other competing camera, this camera will win hands down (I don't want to mention other manufacturers). Canon usually is best in IQ when comparing similar P/S. For the money paid for and the features it has I would recommend it. Just keep in mind the limitations that comes with such a compact P/S.

I purchased this for it's small size. As another review wrote, Auto white balance is terrible indoors, pictures are very yellow. [...] Custom white balance works well. Buttons at times can be hard to operate, especially in dim light when its hard to see and you have to go by feel. I was pleased with shooting with flash off up to ISO 800. Not as good as a new DSLR, but very usable. HD is almost a joke, it may have enough pixels to qualify as HD, but the footage is grainy and the lens flairs easily. When I show people the camera they are impressed by its small size and smooth surface and corners. They also always say it's much heavier then they expected. Battery life is good.LCD is bright and sharp. Bottom line, is small size is not your priority, I would not recommend this camera.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD940 IS Digital Camera (Black):
I bought the camera just in time for a road trip, so am really still learning all it can do. I really enjoyed using it on the trip, though. So far, I'm very happy with it. I have one question, though...when using it as a camcorder, is it possible to make the picture fade in and out? Image stabilization I'm not too sure about. Some of what I filmed was quite shaky, but it may have been me. I may have been expecting too much and was not holding the camera as steady as I could have.

to start, im not a big time photographer. Pros are small size, easy to use, and great lcd. Cons in my opinion were poor focus in mixed lighting ie. shadows were just black sometimes, and image stabalization wasnt as good as i expected. but i would absolutely recomend this to someone who just wants a good small camera.

When my Canon Powershot S5 IS was stolen a week before an upcoming trip, I decided I would try a smaller camera. This PowerShot may be smaller in stature but it sure has lots of great features and is really easy to carry. It is smaller then my Blackberry but still takes great shots and video.
The only thing that took getting used to was not having a vievfinder. Other than that, for a pocketsized camera, it is terrific.

This is the perfect small camera to take on any vacation. The colors are VERY vibrant and there are many useful settings, or you can put the camera on AUTO and it chooses the settings for you. Also, this camera has HD video quality with a very good speaker to record sounds. I would HIGHLY recommend this product.

I mainly use my camera to photograph my friends. This has served well on vacation trips, concerts, nights out. The pictures are high quality and vibrant.
I haven't yet tested it out too much in low light, but have found that pictures can be blurry. I've also never used anything but Automatic so I can't speak on the other features.
One thing I would change is that there is no view finder (hard in bright light situations) and the on button is sunk into the camera.
Otherwise, great, portable, sturdy point and shoot.

I have been wanting a new digital camera for quite some time now, and what a camera did I get! I bought it in NYC and it was perrrrrfect for taking pictures--at night, during the day (very very bright summer light), and even more on the buses tour while on the move (captured the picture perfectly even with the movement)
It is extremely user friendly (didnt even have to read the manual to fully navegate it), it is so small fits in every single one of my purses!, its resolution is perfect, takes picture quick and fast. The videos have great audio. A perfect little package, could not ask for more. Completly satisfied.
The only thing that could be better is the zoom.. it is not the best zoom ever, but for the type of camera it is everything that one could ask for.

I took got this as my first digital camera & I am loving it. It is so small and the pics look amazing. My friends were having me be the photographer because of how amazing the pics looked that this camera takes. If you need a little pocket camera, this is the one. The screen is big & the camera itself is very easy to use. I am a complete novice when it comes to digital cameras.

I bought this camera for a trip to Europe. I like the size and look of the camera. It's fairly easy to use for someone who lacks technical skills.
It seems to have good battery time, uses rechargeable batteries, though it's good to have an extra with you.
I disliked the way the zoom works...the wheel does not work smoothly so it's difficult to find the right zoom. I also didn't think that it zoomed far enough. To use the super zoom you have to go into the program and by then the opportunity is lost. In general, however, my pictures turned out to be very nice.

This camera is small enough to comfortably fit in my back pocket, and can consistently produce quality pictures. Its a simple and easy-to-use camera, with a very smart "auto" feature, that makes it an excellent ultra-compact camera.
