Comments about Canon PowerShot SD980 IS Digital Camera (Gold):
I initially bought the SD980 for its wide "24mm" lens but it has turned out to be a very good camera beyond its ultra wide focal length capabilities. Maybe mine is an exceptionally good one, I don't know, but the glass they used in the lens is really remarkable. The color it duplicates is very rich (as is typical of most Canon lens and sensors) but not un-naturally so. Also the clarity and sharpness of the lens is about as good as a small pocket camera gets. Macro Mode works fantastic in a shaded garden BTW.In my opinion, the camera's DIGIC 4 Processor is probably about the best in the industry keeping low light noise down to a minimum, and light metering in the camera is pretty much spot on too. I usually tweak all my photos in workshop to a degree, but I've had to do very little, if any, post processing work with the SD 980's pictures as far as color and exposure, and sharpness are concerned. The auto focus is also very responsive and accurate, more so than most of my other pocket cameras. Very rarely has it gotten confused trying to focus on an image even in low light. Accurate focusing is one of the things I really appreciate in a small camera, because it really is hard to get it right under all conditions. Along with its great optical image stabilization the SD980 does the business of taking sharp photos very well.As usual, the menus in the SD980 are typical Canon livery. They're perfect and very logically laid out. In fact Canon's user friendly menu functions are always a huge buying incentive for me when it comes to choosing any type of camera, with Nikon coming in a close second. Now for a couple slight cons about the camera.Thought the wide 3" LCD on the SD980 should appeal to shooters that like to view their photos on a wide 16x9 ratio monitor screen; it is one thing about the camera that has failed to enthuse me much. Visually, it's great as a shooting monitor, but to utilize the full width of the super wide 3" screen you have to shoot in the 16x9 screen format (obviously), which I never do, so a lot of the screen is wasted if you shoot in the more typical 4x3 format. That irritates me a bit because the taller 4x3 format reduces the screen's low-profile width to about a 2.5" due to the sides being masked off. The color and sharpness of the screen are quite good, no complaints there, but still I feel I'm not getting the full benefit of its touted 3" monitor width in the mode I usually shoot in. I knew this going in, so I guess I should use the camera in its wide screen format more often—something I'll have to get used to.Also the touch screen capabilities that the camera avails itself to are probably one of those "love em or hate em" features. I'm basically indifferent to it and rarely use it because I just don't like getting fingerprints on an LCD screen. So here again, a lot of this camera's gingerbread (gimmickry) is going to waste on me. But that doesn't make me sorry I bought this wonderful little toy, there are just too many good things to like about this thing that out weigh any of my fuddy-duddy disenchantments. It's a very well made camera with a great lens, and it takes fantastic pictures. I can't help wondering even how much better this camera would've been had Canon decided to keep it in the 10 Mega Pixel "sweet spot." Humm.I bought my SD980 here at B&H BTW. Great store guys. Thanks.

I recently purchased the SD980 in Gold. Let me tell you first of all I am based in Canada and the item took 3 days to arrive! :) I ordered it on a Monday and it arrived on a Thursday afternoon! I lost my camera when I went to Las Vegas and was heartbroken as my sisters wedding was fast approaching. I purchased this camera not only because I needed a camera but also because of the short notice! Secondly, have you ever seen someone with a GOLD camera? The pictures are spectacular. I am not a professional photographer although I have taken many classes and have a passion for taking all sorts of pictures! The clarity is amazing and the quality of the pictures are breaktaking! I would recommend this to any user - from a beginner to advanced.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD980 IS Digital Camera (Gold):
I bought this camera for an upcoming trip to Sicily and Italy, to replace a 7 year old Canon digital, which was my very first digital camera. I've been taking a few shots to get used to it and have found I like the touch screen as it is very easy to use, the camera fits in my shoulder bag's front pocket or a shirt pocket, and the photo quality is so much sharper than those I took with my old camera. The zoom is adequate for my purposes and a 4GB memory card holds more photos than I may take on my three week trip.
I don't pretend to know anything about photography and I am conservative in the number of photos I shoot since I used film point and shoot cameras for most of my life. My son, who is a professional photographer (and prefers high end Nikon) recommended buying this camera at B&H for its quality, small size and weight, reasonable price, and my limited skills. He is finding that with this camera an "old dog" like me can learn a few new tricks!

I purchased this camera for my daughter to use in a digital camera class and it has been great. She has gone out and taken pictures that I never thought she would get with a small camera. Being able to use the camera in a manual mode and set the different settings to what you want has been the ticket.

This is a very user friendly camera. I purchased it for my wife who does not like to read manuals. She figured this out very easily as the menu was very straight forward. She loves the compact design and the large screen is wonderful. the video quality is also good and it is nice that it shoots in HD.

Good little camera to carry around when you don't want to lug a heavy SLR. Compact very functional and easy to use. Video feature is a nice plus.
So far could not find anything wrong with the design and function of this camera.
