I looked for a point and shoot camera for my technophobic parents, that has the best auto-mode photo quality I could find. I surveyed several options, and came to the conclusion that the SD940 is the best deal on the market. The auto mode is truly excellent, probably the best around. The 12 MB photos are crisp and clear, lighting great, the IS function works great too, and the camera is small and thin. The 720p HD video option is also wonderful. I took three 10 minutes 720p video clips (~6 GB) and the battery indicator hasn't dropped a single bar! The only con I could find is the relatively limited x4 optical zoom, but for [$], the deal is still very good. Great buy for people who wants optimal quality with minimum 'thinking' (and an HD option).

The picture resolution is really disappointing, I have been a semi-professional for 20 years and I have never had such disappointing results as I've had with this camera. Yes it's easy to use and a nice and sleak design, but if you want to get a great, crisp and sharp resolution, there is no comparison with the Sony Cybershots.
Furthermore, after just 11 months of regular use, the camera just completely froze up all of a sudden, no particular use, no weather problems, no hardship conditions, it just stopped working from one minute to the next. When I took it down to the Canon repair center the guy standing next to me in line had the exact same Canon model but with another technical problem also within first year of use, and the Canon lady said they had had a lot of problems with this model.
The only good thing about this camera was the video, it took surprisingly good quality resolution videos.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD940 IS Digital Camera (Silver):
I was looking for a basic P&S camera that would be affordable and easy to carry around, and I found it in the SD940. I was contemplating between this and the SD1300, which is a virtually identical camera, but bought this because it lets you shoot HD video and it's much slimmer, making it easier to fit into your pocket. The only downsides are that the buttons are quite small, which can make things difficult if you have large hands, and that it doesn't have a viewfinder, as Canon is eliminating this feature from most of its P&S cameras.

I use the camera for everyday use, taking landscape, sunset, beach and photos around the city. The camera has many of the same features as the newer cameras and for a much better price. Picture quality is perfect for a point and shoot camera.
The newer models have a better zoom, but it is still adequate for most pictures. The control buttons in the back are a little bit different, but easy to use.

This camera is great! It's small form factor allows you to fit it in your pocket and you don't even know it's there. The 720p video is great and the colours and quality of the pictures are amazing. This is the second one of these that I have owned and they are hard to find now. Well worth the $$$ and a quality product you will definitely enjoy using!

I bought this camera to take photos at family events, beginning with my mom's 80th birthday party at the lake. I am not very camera savvy, and I found this camera very easy to use. It is also very compact and can be slid into a pocket or purse. The quality of the photos is very good!

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD940 IS Digital Camera (Silver):
If you are seriously involved in composition and prefer the traditional 3:2 aspect ratio (and inexpensive 4x6 prints) do not buy this camera. When you go to "display overlay" and choose the 3:2 guide, you create transparent gray bars at top and bottom, giving you the remaining 3:2 proportion photo area. But, as soon as you take a photo, your "review" look puts you back to a default 4:3 composition. Gray bars disappeared. It is the same problem in "replay". No more 3:2. And even into your computer, you do not get the 3:2 composition you originally intended, so you cannot be surewhether or not to save it. It is a different photo. Nuts. I own two other digital cameras, one point and shoot and one SLR. Both give me my 3:2 aspect ratio option all the way through to the computer and possible 4x6 prints. I expected nothing less from this SD 940, which [...] has turned out to be a very expensive throw-away item.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD940 IS Digital Camera (Silver):
I sought after the SD 940 despite newer models like the SD1300 and SD1400 being available because I view the 940 as being similar but superior despite not being the "newest" product. It's a wonderful small package for reliable and quality point and shoots. The combination of quality, look/feel, and size make it perfect for travels and social functions. I'm a big fan of Canon and this does not disappoint. There are other brands that might offer more gizmo's, but this has the essential features that you'll actually use!

I love my PowerShot! I had the older SD400 and this was the perfect step up. Menus are different but didn't take long to get comfortable with. Camera look/style/feel is even better than pictured. I took it right away on a trip to Central America and I love my pictures!

Love this camera. I use this camera for casual family & general pictures. The quality of the pictures are very clear and the memu is easy to use. It fits right in your pocket so you can carry it all the time. The on & off button is a little small but you can also use the arrow to display picture on the back of the camera to turn it on.[...]
