I bought the Audio-Technica ATH-M50s headphones to replace my broken Sennheiser HD-280 PRO headphones that the headband had split in two on.
Using the ATH-M50s is like taking taking a blanket off the dull, muffled sounds I was used to hearing. While the ATH-M50s aren't ruler flat in frequency response, they do reproduce sounds with incredible clarity.
The bass is tight and low, without being boomy or over-hyped. The mids are clear and full, with no "tin can" hollowness that too many closed-back headphones tend to sound like. The high frequencies are bright and detailed. A cymbal crash sounds like a cymbal crash, not like a blast of high-frequency noise.
I use these headphones for multiple applications, including monitoring and tracking. I also use them for listening to music (classical, folk, pop, rock, country) and I have literally wanted to go through my entire music collection again, as I'm hearing subtle nuances in the music that I've never heard before.
And finally, they are comfortable. I can wear these headphones for hours on end without experiencing any pain or discomfort, no odd pressure points being felt. While they do get a bit warm around the ears, being a closed-back design, this is to be expected, and can't really be considered a negative given the known restrictions of the design.
The straight cable is so much nicer than coiled cables, no kinking and binding, and no slingshot effect. The cable is plenty sturdy feeling, with stress relief on both ends, and the plug end is especially well designed in this regard. Finally, the 1/4" adapter screws on and stays secured, and is knurled to provide a good grip when putting it on or taking off of the mini-plug.
Overall, I can't say enough good about these headphones, they are an incredible value with exceptional performance that not only met, but surpassed my expectations.

I use these headphones in a professional recording studio [@]) where to me, reliability is paramount. The first time I let a client use my new headphones, they complained that they could only hear one side. Since I had JUST purchased them, I didn't think that they would be the source of the problem. However, after checking every signal path and connection for nearly an hour, I finally figured out that my brand new headphones have a 1/4" plug that is somehow sub-standard (It may just be the 1/8" to 1/4" adapter). If I jiggle the plug around in the headphone amp's jack, they start to work. Just to be sure it wasn't the amp, I checked them in several different devices. Yep...bad plug. I now have to send my new headphones back to have them repaired or replaced. If you buy these and they have a good plug, you will be thrilled. If the plug is bad, you might experience the same level of embarrassment that I did. Enjoy!

I'm not an audiophile...I use these everday (for the past weeks) for listening to music and watching movies. I like the level of bass and the crispness of the sound. I use it off an amp...I have to turn the volume up more than with my other headphones to make it loud. I wish the earcups can rotate not just the padding. It gets a little warm from wearing but not too bad. Doesn't feel heavy on the head.

I really liked the sound quality and I think it's a grate chose from this price.
But the one thing I didn't liked was the cable length some people might like it but I thought it was a little long for me.
Except that the headphone is a really grate product!

I use these headphones from my Mac and Android phone. I'm not an audiophile by any means, but the sound is excellent. Isolation is great with very little bleed. Nothing gets lost in playback as all ranges are crisp and clear. Sound reproduction at minimal levels is amazing and only gets better as you turn up the volume. My only negative is that I've found bass, while having excellent sound and response, to become distorted at significantly higher levels. I don't think the level is too loud, but it could easily be caused by the signal from my phone.
I can't wait to hear these after 40-50 hours of playback once they're really tuned in.

I purchased these to replace my old school panasonic headphones (pads wore out after 10 years). Had to have headphones as the wife tends to fall asleep during movies, and always asks.. "Can you lower it?"... :-)
I purchased the ATH-M50s based on all the reviews online, and for the top reviewed headphone on bandh.
The sound is amazing! Had to watch Master and Commander bluray, as a test. Used a new Onkyo receiver as the AMP. OMG! These things sound amazing! The low ends, when the canons would blow through the ships, were insane! It was like I had a subwoofer in the headphones! Very, very pleased!
Watched a few movies with them on for a while, and head did not hurt.. sweat was non existant. Overall was an amazing expierience.
I purchased the ATH-M50S. The "S" version, for the straight long cord.. needed to reach to my reciever, to the couch. The 11' cable did not quite reach. :-( So I took the headphones apart, via 2 easy to remove screws. I then replaced the 11' cord with an equivelant 15' cord. Just three solder connections. They are really easy to solder, or are not microscopic to do so. I read online how people were freaked out, and have to use quality cable. But, when I opened the speakers up, I noticed the cable that powers the right can, is wicked a wicked small guage. In short.. I assume the guage of the cable is minor. I used the simialr type of guage as the existing cable anyway. I used a 1/4" 15' extension cable, and just cut the female end off. In short.. it wouldnt have mattered if I got the straight cable version or the coiled.
Love the leather bag it comes with. Love how they fold up, and fit in the bag, for small storage spaces.
My 2 cents.

These are currently my highest performing headphones to date. I chose these after reading up on them on head-fi.org, in which are ranked near the top.Pros: Great sound quality, relatively light weight, seem durable.Cons: Ear pads could be more comfortable. This is not a deal breaker, but they cause your ears to sweat after being worn for a while. These pads also appear to have a relatively short life span. Length of the cord, It is about 10 feet long, so the coiled cord is much better in this aspect.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50s Professional Closed-Back Studio Headphones (Straight Cable):
I purchased these headphones last month and have been nothing but impressed. I use them for recording purposes. It is very important to have headphones that get the natural/flat sound of your instrument or voice. These fit that description. After using other headphone sets for long amounts of time in the studio, they get very uncomfortable. These headphones are comfy, and I can leave them on for hours at a time. This is a good product right here. They are perfect for mixing and mastering.

I prefer near-fields for mixing jobs. But when kids are asleep that's not an option. ATH-M50s fits the need perfectly.
Pros
1) Unmatched resolution and clarity. I can catch tiny defects very easily without push up the volume
2) Very flat frequency response
3) Excellent build quality, gold-plated plugs, true leather padding...
Cons
1) A bit heavy and not very comfortable due to closed design. I need to take it off every 30 minute or so. Not a big deal as it's my natural break time anyway
I would also note that it is not recommended for listening music - it will sound too "dry". However given the purpose it was designed for this is hardly a weakness. I programmed a "listening mode" in my mixer with some additional reverb - problem solved :)

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50s Professional Closed-Back Studio Headphones (Straight Cable):
While not a full blow audiophile, I still appreciate listening to good music. I primarily use this in the house but have been occasionally using it outside as it does help shield the ears from the cold winter breeze. While its cord may not be best suited for traveling or on the go listening, it is easy enough to tie it with a twist tie and shove it in a coat pocket.
I live in a neighborhood that's not too noisy but there is some considerable sounds from and to school and I can say that the headphones isolate half of what you would normally hear. When i listen to them inside the house, i can practically keep myself focused for hours due to the silence.
Now to the sound itself and as I said earlier I am not a true audiophile and can only discern these headphones to the best of any commoner can. I upgraded from a lower end pair of Sony dj cans which were a lot looser compared to the M50s so it was a suprise to me how the music sounded more focused with the m50s. Also, little nuances which I did not hear before are now visible. The bass is what it should be and not something that tries to grab your attention from the actual music playing, unless what you listen to is bass-heavy, then you would find yourself content with these cans. Overall I give the sound a two thumbs up. For anyone who would like to up their gear and have a more enjoyable listening experience that isn't anything like what most consumer brand cans can produce, then the M50s are perfect for you.
At the end of the day, the only problem i could think i might have from these is how the cushions insulate heat; even in the winter the cushions get the sides of my head sweating after a couple minutes walking so I probably won't be able to use this outside much during summer, but really most studio headphones have this problem so it's not really a con.
P.S. As of now I've had these headphones close to less than a month and have had no problems yet. They are definitely looking quite durable and I have no worries about them breaking anytime soon.

Headphones are great, especially with a portable amp like the PA2V2. They are a bit bigger and heavier than I expected, and can heat ears a bit more than I would like. But since I do not spend 8 hours straight with headphones on, these minor problems are more than compensated for by the amazing sound quality of these headphones. They really cover the spectrum well and precisely. Bass over may want to look for something else, but people listening to variety of music from classic and jazz to trip hop and hard rock will find them incredible versatile. For the price (and even up to 200-250$), I haven't come across any cans that could beat them.

Now this is a great pair of headphones - Especially for the price! I use a pair of Sennheiser 595's at work for video editing/monitoring and the (relatively) compact size of the ATHM50s set was appealing, as were the overwhelmingly positive reviews across the net. They fit well with glasses and are very comfortable overall. The sound quality is excellent as well with crisp voices and good clarity.

Very, very good. Balanced sound with good isolation. Comfort? Depends. If you have large ears (seriously) then few phones will fit around them. These are pretty comfortable, although I have yet to wear them for a solid few hours, either in a tracking session (as usually we monitor on loudspeakers) or when editing. And, seemingly rugged. As they are new I've no track record to really base this on, yet. They deliver fine sound from an iPad 2. Good job AT! -Opus4Studios

These headphones are incredible. Fantastic sound quality. The bass response is really, really nice. It's well defined, accurate and strong, but it's not overpowering. The mids and highs are awesome too. Very crisp and I heard things in my music that I haven't heard with my other headphones. As well, these headphones look really nice and are really comfortable. The only things I do not like about these headphones is the very long straight cable. I always have to hold a bit of the cable when i'm listening to music on my iPod or my computer. Overall, amazing pair of headphones, for an amazing price! I would pay more than 200 dollars for these headphones. They are that good. Buy them.
