I have owned/well-used three previous versions of this lens, going back to the still-available 2.8 AF-D 80-200. This newest version reminds me of that lens, via its relative compactness & superb balance. In all other respects, the newest version just plain rocks the competition and the Nikkor predecessors. I didn't care for the steep price increase of 25%. I still don't know if/how it's absolutely justified, but more ED glass isn't a free upgrade, apparently. What I can say is this latest version balances, handles, & functions far better than its lineage. The color & contrast the best I've seen from any lens I use currently. Sharpness is awesome, folks. WOW!!! It has just the right proportions. Just enough additional diameter to feel "just right". The tripod collar - though good in the previous 70-200 - improved to perfection here. The zoom ring just enough wider to be "just right", though the focal lengths should be engraved, IMO. I have this lens mounted to my D300 w/MBD-10, and I don't know how it could balance any better. This is the heaviest 70/80-200 to date, but I'd never know it. It really just feels so right in action. My quickie/crude VR testing says it REALLY, REALLY works this time, with no viewfinder quirks, either! Focus dead-on & oh-so quick. I have no doubt that bokeh will be on par with the finest Nikkors. If this is your workhorse focal range then you will not be disappointed in any way with this optic. On the contrary, you may wonder how you ever enjoyed shooting without it. It is just superb. Thank you, Nikon! No, this is not a cheapo consumer lens, folks. But if you've been yearning for the 200 F:2, you may just want to re-evaluate your criteria; this 70-200 IS that good.

The three stars are a warning. This is the most agonizing lens I have ever owned. First, the good news. The image quality is superb. The autofocus on my D700 is dead on perfect. Color, contrast, and bokeh are all outstanding, with good sharpness at 2.8. The lens is a joy to use, quick and responsive, and the updated VR is excellent. I've made great shots handheld at 1/15 sec. which I never thought would be possible. This is a great improvement over the older version. Now the bad news. If you want tight head shots, forget it. Nikon has played a clever trick on us. At a working distance of 6 feet with the lens set at 200mm, the actual focal length is shortened to about 140mm. At 10 feet, its about 160mm. You can look it up, this information is all over the internet. You have to set focus over 35 feet away to get a true focal length of 200mm. By contrast, the older version of this lens only shortens to about 198mm. You have to decide for yourself whether or not this is a deal breaker for you. More importantly, my current copy is the third one I tried. I had to return two others to get one that worked right. The others produced images with noticeable blur along the right edge, and had a hot spot in the center (thank Lloyd Chambers for bringing this to everyone's attention). [...] In the end, I decided to keep the lens for its versatile zoom range. Besides, Nikon users just don't have any other options without going to third party lenses. I suggest that anyone considering this lens test it rigorously before accepting it.

Here's what you need to know about this lens. It is without exception the best 70-200 lens you can buy for a Nikon DSLR camera.

It's sharper, faster, and just down right better than everything else out there. So if that's what you are looking for stop reading and just buy this thing. The only reasons not to are, you want a small light lens, you want a cheaper lens, you don't have a Nikon DSLR.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

This lens is fantastic. The bokeh and sharpness are amazing. The focal breathing effect isn't an issue for me, and quite frankly only probably affects a small number of users. The weight is obviously a con, but if you get the right strap (like the black rapid ones) it's a non-issue. The hood is also a bit flimsy, but at least it's better than nothing. Overall I'm very happy with this lens and would highly recommend it.

I use this lens for weddings, portraits and awesome candid shots! Yes you can purchase the cheaper 80-200mm, which is pretty good in its own right. However, why settle for less. This lens brings me closer to the Nikon Trinity being I own the beast 24-70mm 2.8. Bokeh is decent in comparison to primes but the clarity and sharpness is beyond my expectations. Don't let the price scare you for this lens will outlast your camera body for years to come. Purchase this lens and you'll wont regret.

I have not had to use this lens much...yet! But i do plan on doing so shortly. The image quality is way better than any lens i currently own, with exception to a 60mm macro...but we talking about two totally different lenses.

Lens is a bit pricey but it does have some great value if used to it potential.

Lens is large & heavy and mounted to a D7000 with the MB-D11, it is a quite a bit of a workout just to carry around. Hope i can utilize with a tripod. Haha...

I would defiantly recommend to someone else, but for the serious enthusiast or professional only.

A worthy upgrade to the previous version, which is much more at home on DX than FX. The bokeh is creamy and the focusing capability is top notch, as you would expect from a lens designed for capturing sporting events.

If there's something negative about this lens (I don't want to hear any crying about size/weight), I haven't found it.

OK this was my first REAL good glass and it was worth every cent spent on it. Low light is good, the VR is super nice and actually lets me move off of a tripod more often in low light situations.

I have shot about 3,000 frame through the lens since I got it 2 weeks ago and I love it. However if you are thinking of using it in the studio, make sure you have a lot of room cause you are going to have to back up to get a full body shot in. I knew that going in and have not been dissapointed. It is heavy but it gives my camera good balance.

I shoot photos of wildlife and this lens is fast enough to lock onto focus and get the shot when the critter is moving. I've been able to get photos of birds in flight and have the autofocus on the lens lock on. In very very low light (when almost dark), it may not focus, but you can switch to manual. For the most part, it is amazing that it autofocuses in low light. Some photos in low light and handheld are not as sharp because motion was not completely stopped as photos taken in bright light. It is very large and heavy and I use it with a Nikon D700 body. The image is clear and sharp edge to edge. I'm planning on getting a holster and shoulder harness because it is tiring to carry and I shoot without a tripod, but I am stronger for doing it.

If you are serious about photography and you have a Nikon SLR then this is a must have lens. Well built and very sharp. Great for both DX and FX formats. I find there are many situations where this lens works very well. The only drawbacks as an amateur photographer is the cost and if your used to the 18-200 vr this is heavier than the non-professional lenses. The pluses significantly outweigh these minor negatives. You will have this lens forever, its great for sports, low light and can accept teleconverters. If you do ever decide to sell the lens, it will hold it's value. I enjoy the lens and the quality of the pictures I am now creating with it.

I use this lens primarily to shoot my daughters basketball games. It allows me to shoot without a flash even with the less than bright light in school gyms. I usually shoot without the monopod due to the fast moving action and the lens does get heavy at times.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

This lens allows me to leave my 400mm lens at home. I can use the 70/200 with or without my 2X convertor to meet my needs and the field bag is lighter as well. It's still a little heavy but a small price to pay for the quality and versatility.

This lens is amazing and super crisp. The range this lens can handle is worth the money and the weight. I've used it several times now for weddings and family photo shoots.

I have several other nikkor lenses. This one outshines them all on how fast it focuses. The vibration reduction is also fantastic. I have been able to shoot low-lite hand held shots at 1/8 of a second. simply amazing

Had the 70-200 VR first edition - mainly used on my D300. Was great. When I went to the D700, it showed the well known corner weakness.

I bit the bullet and traded it in for the VRII. An improvement on an already outstanding lens.

Purchased this lens after much thought and hemming and hawing. [$] is a large chunk of changed to spend on a lens that you can't immediately justify for a starting photography company. This lens is absolutely fantastic, better then I could have imagined. I have extensive experience with the VR 1 version and I have to say this one feels more solidly built, and has feels way more steady while handheld shooting. If your thinking about buying the Sigma 70-200 F/2.8 OS HSM instead of this lens, like I was going to, forget it and save up for a few more months. This lens does go for another $1,000 but the speed and AF accuracy kill the sigma. I have used the Sigma for many types of shots, from fast drag racing at night, to portraits, and the Nikon is just better, no matter what the situation. The VR 2 system is ridiculously good. I can get tack sharp images at 200mm F/2.8 at 1/5 of a second when I'm shooting still life without a tripod. What other lens can do that? It is EXTREMELY expensive, but honestly, I think it's worth it to step up to a lens like this.

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens features an innovative Vibration Reduction (VR) system that allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions. I just love the way I can take a picture even when I'm upclose the object and it comes out so sharp and so very colorful with my Nikon D 700.

Few things in life are more gratifying than trading up & loving the result. My down-the-Amazon/up-the-Nile Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom was a winner... semi-colon however... the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is THE quintessential zoom for an advancing amateur who's rearing a gaggle of athletic children & grandchildren and biannually treating himself to treks in exotic locales.
