I have owned/well-used three previous versions of this lens, going back to the still-available 2.8 AF-D 80-200. This newest version reminds me of that lens, via its relative compactness & superb balance. In all other respects, the newest version just plain rocks the competition and the Nikkor predecessors. I didn't care for the steep price increase of 25%. I still don't know if/how it's absolutely justified, but more ED glass isn't a free upgrade, apparently. What I can say is this latest version balances, handles, & functions far better than its lineage. The color & contrast the best I've seen from any lens I use currently. Sharpness is awesome, folks. WOW!!! It has just the right proportions. Just enough additional diameter to feel "just right". The tripod collar - though good in the previous 70-200 - improved to perfection here. The zoom ring just enough wider to be "just right", though the focal lengths should be engraved, IMO. I have this lens mounted to my D300 w/MBD-10, and I don't know how it could balance any better. This is the heaviest 70/80-200 to date, but I'd never know it. It really just feels so right in action. My quickie/crude VR testing says it REALLY, REALLY works this time, with no viewfinder quirks, either! Focus dead-on & oh-so quick. I have no doubt that bokeh will be on par with the finest Nikkors. If this is your workhorse focal range then you will not be disappointed in any way with this optic. On the contrary, you may wonder how you ever enjoyed shooting without it. It is just superb. Thank you, Nikon! No, this is not a cheapo consumer lens, folks. But if you've been yearning for the 200 F:2, you may just want to re-evaluate your criteria; this 70-200 IS that good.

The three stars are a warning. This is the most agonizing lens I have ever owned. First, the good news. The image quality is superb. The autofocus on my D700 is dead on perfect. Color, contrast, and bokeh are all outstanding, with good sharpness at 2.8. The lens is a joy to use, quick and responsive, and the updated VR is excellent. I've made great shots handheld at 1/15 sec. which I never thought would be possible. This is a great improvement over the older version. Now the bad news. If you want tight head shots, forget it. Nikon has played a clever trick on us. At a working distance of 6 feet with the lens set at 200mm, the actual focal length is shortened to about 140mm. At 10 feet, its about 160mm. You can look it up, this information is all over the internet. You have to set focus over 35 feet away to get a true focal length of 200mm. By contrast, the older version of this lens only shortens to about 198mm. You have to decide for yourself whether or not this is a deal breaker for you. More importantly, my current copy is the third one I tried. I had to return two others to get one that worked right. The others produced images with noticeable blur along the right edge, and had a hot spot in the center (thank Lloyd Chambers for bringing this to everyone's attention). [...] In the end, I decided to keep the lens for its versatile zoom range. Besides, Nikon users just don't have any other options without going to third party lenses. I suggest that anyone considering this lens test it rigorously before accepting it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

Superb image quality and rock steady construction. Subsequently, the lens, coupled with a pro DSLR, is incredibly heavy. I really can't think of a single strike against the 70-200. I did have a problem with my first order, where the AF moiter seemed to squeal under the strain of shifting the gigantic focusing element. I returned the lens and received a new one, which also makes a very quiet squeaking as it focuses sometimes, but I believe it's nothing.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

This lens is not for novices. You must be serious about photography to own one. At f:2.8 this lens is heavy. It is also quite expensive. But with the use of a monopod, I get great results. It is a fast lens, and with a camera configured in DX format, I get up to 300 MM.... used with the TC 20 111 Teleconverter, I can push it to 600 MM with sharp and clear images. I haven't taken it out to a dark sky location yet, but I expect photographing the night sky will be easier than with other lenses.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I already had high expectations for this lens based upon all the other reviews I read so I would have expected to maybe be a little disapointed by reality vs. what I'd built up in my mind. I wasn't! I used it for the first time to photograph my son's baseball game and found that I couldn't take a bad picture with it; everything was sharp and captured the action beautifully. The bokeh is pleasing as well.My arm got tired quickly trying to carry the bulk of the lens around, it's a beast, but I'm not complaining. I expected it to be big and heavy and I'm perfectly willing to carry it around in exchange for the complete awesomeness that it produces.I've never been able to get so close to the action before, so intimate with the subjects, or been able to capture the candid moments (that would have required me to be closer) therby ruining the moment).LOVE LOVE LOVE this lens.

I sold 4 lenses and my D90 to buy this.

    By Dani

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

2 Years ago I didnt know what a DSLR was, after learning a little and getting a D90 i got a 70-300 thinking why would my friend suggest the 70-200 its price is insane...2 years later, i understand. After upgrading to the D800 i had to make the best of it and decided ill get the 70-200. Within a week i sold all my gear to justify the price tag.Trust me get this and if you need to you can sell it for the same price and maybe even more. Such lenses only go up in value. The price already has been raised.
Why do i love this lens?
Focus- Bam! Its focused faster then your camera turns on.
Colors- just cant explain it, theres no words,
Bokeh and DOF- theres a reason this is part of the cream team, your subject POPS! The background is creamy and rich with colors.
    Build- Its a tank.
Weight- its heavy like you cant imagine and i love that, you hug it proudly when walking. Who wants a chep lightweight peice of glass after paying over 2k. If you cant handle the weight then you dont enjoy photography.
It comes with a sweet attachment for the tripod. A heavy duty case which I find useless bec the lens sits in my camera bag not around my neck.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

Excellent dispursion and sharpness through out the range. I've owned the older model at half the price. I lost some great shots because of slow focusing. This model has the AF-S motor, which in my humble opinon eliminates that lack of speed. Also, the VRII is nice to have when you are hand holding. Spent the extra $, you won't be sorry. It's an investment.

I paired this lens with the nikon d 7000. As there is no shortage of great revirws for this product I will simply say for people pictures ...this lens is awesome. Some say they like it for landscapes I tend to prefer wider and lighter lenses for that but from portraits to birthday parties this lens reigns supreme. Low light shooting is good and normal lighting conditions make unbelievably sharp images with great bokeh. Its fast enough to catch those kid shots as they dart around. If you are on the fence about buying this lens and you have the means...just buy it, you'll love it

When I first used one of these I was amazed at how fast it focused. It resolves very well my D7000, and it is very sharp. This is great for portraits, and wildlife.

I have not used the older version with the AF lock, but I am not sure why it was ommited. That said, I have not had problems with focus so far. This is a pretty big lens, but worth it if you are in low light.

I know is not cheap and not easy to say worth the money, but this lens is already a legend within Nikon shooters, if you still think that a zoom lens can't touch a prime you have never shoot with this lens. It also takes TC like a prime lens. The VR is also improved and AF speed is one of the Nikon's best.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

Is there any SLR photographer who doesn't want this lens? No bokeh, crystal clear and FAST focus at all ranges. If I had to pick a negative it's the weight - but of course the weight is tied directly to the quality of the glass. Tough to hand-hold and I feel a monopod goes a long way in the use of this lens.
