The Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VRII Zoom Lens is a great one-lens solution for DX-format D-SLRs. Its wide angle to telephoto focal range gives photographers a versatile tool to get the shot without having to switch lenses. It is engineered with superior quality ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements yielding sharpness and color correction without distortion, even at wide apertures. Additionally, this zoom is constructed with a 7-blade diaphragm which renders captured images with natural-looking out-of-focus elements.

VR (Vibration Reduction) II image stabilization lets the photographer hand-hold the camera and enable shooting up to 4 stops slower than with non-VR II lenses. Plus, VR II increases the range of usable shutter speeds and makes telephoto shooting much easier without a tripod. This high-grade, internal focusing (IF) lens incorporates Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) to guarantee smooth, silent, accurate, and quick focusing. Autofocus (A) or manual (M) modes can easily be selected with a focus mode switch, and a manual override function allows the shooter to quickly change from auto to manual focusing.

With 11x zoom versatility this one-lens solution covers a broad range of photographic opportunities. Picture angle is the equivalent of a 27-300mm lens in 35mm format.
Nikon VR II (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization, engineered specifically for each VR NIKKOR lens, enables handheld shooting at up to 4 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper images.
Two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements offers superior sharpness and color correction by effectively minimizing chromatic aberration, even at wide aperture settings.
Three aspherical lens elements eliminate coma and other aberrations, even at wide apertures.
A zoom lock switch secures lens barrel at its minimum length.
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare.
Built with Nikon's exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM), the lens enables fast, accurate and quiet autofocus.
With a rounded 7-blade diaphragm more natural appearance of out-of-focus image elements are rendered.
The 18-200mm focuses as close as 20 inches, extending versatility.
The M/A (Manual/Autofocus) mode switch enables quick response to changing situations between manual and autofocus operation.
The included flower-shaped lens hood HB-35 shades the objective from unwanted, image-degrading light.

Got this just before leaving for a week and a half on Maui and it delivered amazingly as a travel companion. You get what you pay for with t his lens. In the age of really not needing (or wanting) to carry around multiple lenses for the average photographer this lens is the ticket to photos that are amazing for beginners and good enough up to the intermediate/semi-pro. Would I like a 2.8 version, absolutely. I agree with other reviewers that I had to either step to a wider aperture, add some shutter time, or up the ISO to get certain shots compared to other lenses I have used without such a range. However, the VRII helps when using slower shutter speeds, a welcome offset. You definitely get some distortion out at 18mm up to 22mm or so, which is kind of a drag for someone like me who traditionally uses 18mm as a standard in primarily landscape photographs... It's not always obvious, but in those sweeping ocean views or level horizon shots you'll definitely see it. that can be a plus or minus depending on what you're going for. The range is great on this guy, however, and I have found myself exploring other ranges of compositions, including 200mm zooms. The VR is sick, not sure I will ever want a lens without it as I have got countless shots I never would have even attempted without having it.Bottom line: is this a professional lens - no. Did Nikon market and sell it that way, no. What it is the greatest all around lens money can buy. If you read deep, any complaints in reviews for this lens are from people who didn't realize what they were getting into and had expectations way above what this package has ever claimed to be. Pros may want to pass this up for bigger apertures, shorter ranges and better glass, but it would take much more $ to get this versatility for the average Joe and for those just grab the camera and go days...

I have owned the original version of this lens for over a year. The only problem with it was the zoom creep. The Nikon press announcement for this upgrade specifically indicated it employed an all new zoom mechanism to prevent zoom creep. The only change I can see is the lock at 18mm -- but I don't think anyone ever reported a problem with the lens creeping away from 18mm. The creep problem is between 35-150 or so -- and while this new model does seem somewhat more stiff zooming between 35-150, the copy I got will still creep out if set to 50 and the camera is left to hang naturally from the strap [no shaking necessary].

I was also looking forward to the improved contrast from the improved coatings also noted in the press announcement. In a/b comparisons with my original 18-200, I couldn't detect any difference -- even comparing histograms. Not to say it isn't better -- I just couldn't see it as better.

The one thing I did detect with the new model [I hope just a problem with the copy I got] was that out-of-focus pinpoint light sources are not circular, but rather, tear drop shaped. My original version, while not the best bokeh, is at least symmetric in this regard -- yes, somewhat darker in the center of the circles than at the edges, but at least symmetric. This is really annoying on high contrast out of focus horizontal lines which due to the uneven bokeh, appear to have ghosts drifting above them, as though the camera or object moved during the exposure. [Yes, VR was off for all these on-tripod, shutter-delay-on comparisons.]

I am somewhat surprised to see a re-design with this little impact.

Very Versatile Lens with Decent Quality

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II Zoom Lens:

This lens is very versatile. I sold my 18-55mm and 55mm-200mm and got this one instead. Easy to carry (a little heavier than the 55-200, but only need to carry one!. Saves time, as you do not need to change lenses as often. The quality of photos are decent. My fix 35mm definitely produces better colors, however, not as versatile. Overall, I think this is a good investment for an amateur photographer.

I first used my new lens on a weekend trip--got great photos of grandson's
birthday and gardens at the Springs in Las Vegas. So far so good although
the lens is a little heavier that my 55-200mm it is great not to have to change
      lenses.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II Zoom Lens:

Fantastic lens, I carry just this and the Nikkor 35mm 1.8 for indoor low light. I have not had any issues, the lens has slight vignetting at 18mm but nothing that cant be fixed with Photoshop, lightroom, DxO or any tool that can update that.
The new Zoom lock at 18 is not something I use other than in storage. the VR is fantastic.
I really dont have any cons on this lens.
Works pretty well for Macro as well, extended to 200mm and the minimum focus distance is around 18" so there are no issues getting beautiful macro shots.

I really debated about spending the extra money to buy this lens. My main reason for choosing it was that I hate changing my lens. I'm not a professional photographer and am relatively new at it. I doubt I'll ever invest in two camera bodies so changing lens was inevitable. But with this lens, I take 95% of my pictures and never have to change the lens. It's a bit heavier, but not as heavy as carrying both lenses! If you are thinking about it, then you will likely NEVER regret getting it!!!

Here I am again without my favorite lens as it is one more time, back in the repair shop after one year. This lens takes wonderful photos and I love the VR function, but rugged, apparently, it ain't as my shop is having to replace internal parts one more time at the tune of close to $300 each time.

I ordered this lens as a NIKON Refurb. Came out of the box pristine with all off the proper documentation, lens hood, and lens bag. No way to know that it was refurbished except that the warranty is 90 days instead of 1 year. Saved $100.Its quick to focus, silent, and sharp. Just like all the reviews said. So convenient to have just one lens for up close (18mm) and far away (200mm).

This lens is typical Nikon quality with a degree of compactness and versatility. The 18-200 zoom range replaces two original lenses and the matching filters. The 18-200 lens also allows me to shoot without the thought of changing lenses.

Considering what this lens does I have no negative comments.

I use my Nikkor 18-200mm lens on all kinds of photo shoots. I got it used, but if you put in a new box you wouldn't be able to tell the deference. I was nervous ordering a used lens online, but was very pleased with it when i used it for the first time.

As a pro video shooter I often need a stlll image for scouting and documentation for the client, it gives me the range I'm looking for.
love the size and sharpness of the lense. only had it a short time but so far it does all I want it to, both long and close up.

I use the lens mostly for indoor ceremonies and sporting events and it works great! It's fast enough to get clear shots in low light and withstands the banging around at sporting events and splashing from swim meets. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a versatile indoor/outdoor lens.
