To all of you shopping for an external hard drive, look no further. Let me do your leg work for you. I've just read between 200-300 reviews, studied benchmark tests, and spent way too much time researching what should've been available to me through one good review and I'd like to do that for you now.
Bottomline up front, the G-drive is worth the money but like anything else comes with its own issues.
First of all, ALL HDDs fail. It's just a fact we have to face until we all have SSDs in our workspaces. It's only a matter of time and volume of use before one fails, doesn't wake up, or starts making clunking noises. Period. No arguments accepted.
So let's get on to more important questions such as how long is it going to last? What is the performance like compared to similar models? What is the audible influence on the workspace? These are realistic questions we need to be asking ourselves.
Longevity: The Hitachi brand has earned a solid name for itself (relatively speaking) over the last several years. According to IT pros, several years ago they weren't doing so well. But this isn't the case today and simply judging by the lower number of negative reviews of G-Tech is atleast a little demostration of this allegation. Go to audio/video sites, they recommend Hitachi. Ask B&H reps, they recommend G-Tech/Hitachi. I could go on.
Performace: Being a 7200RPM drive clues us in on the immediate perfomance gain over most other (slower) drives on the market. But, if you need results of comparisons conducted on similar speed models you'll find benchmark tests indicating the G-Drive to be at or near the front of the pack in most tests available online. Of course, these differences are minute and most of us probably won't notice the difference between any 7200 RPM quality hard drive running eSATA or FW800.
Noise: As many of you may have heard, there is a pronounced noise disadvantage with this hard drive. It's not that it's a freight train by any means, but there is a slight high-pitched whine that comes out of this thing which can be heard up to about 4 feet away. I've remedied this by placing the unit on the floor on top of some carpet facing away from me. If it's not painfully clear, I'm not a fan of noise near my workstation.
Altogether, the noise and related vibration isn't bad enough (for most of us) to settle for a lesser drive. If you can locate the drive away from the immediate desk area or work space, it should be quiet enough to be used in any capacity. Some folks may not even notice the noise. I recommend the drive if you are looking for a longer lasting, higher-than-average performing drive at somewhat of a price premium. I really hope this helps. This info cost me about 40 hours worth of research!

I have to agree with the other reviews that this drive is loud. For being a fan-less design, it's rather shocking. Because of how loud it is I've knocked it down a couple of stars. Anyone wanting to use this as part of a media server solution will be greatly disappointed in this product.
The wall-wart is smaller than the past models, but could consume multiple spots on a power strip.

I have the drive partitioned into two 1TB's. One for backups and one for media. So far I havnt had any problems. It is a solid design and works great. Only issue is it is loud but i can deal with that, rather than my eternal drive overworking.

I'm using this for OS-X Time machine to back up the main drive on my IMac. It has a lot of capacity, is a very reliable product, and will be worth its weight in gold if I have a hard drive crash.

This drive has been reliable and it looks great on the desk too with its slick brushed stainless cover. The venting is generous and it remains substantially cooler than similar drives. The "on" light is easy to see. All around, a great drive.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
I bought this drive because all the pro's I know said they were durable and trouble free, at least in the past, and time will tell for the future. Ask me again in a few years. I's worked well enough for the last 2 weeks.
Con's: The power light is WAY WAY too bright and extremely irritating, in any non overlit environment, and the power switch is in the back of the unit.... I turned the unit backwards to be able to be near it without getting a headache from the flashing light. A blue sharpie could help dim the light, as could duct or electrical tape, but the light would still be flashing through the vent/cooling holes.
Aside from the functional workings of the drive, I would suggest getting a drive with an easilly accesable power button in the front, and a less overbearing power/use light.

I always give 4 stars because I assume there is another better product out there that I don't know about.
I bought this hard drive in order to store HD Video on my Mac. It does a great job.
At first the light on the front of the drive, flickered and I did not like that at all. It settled down, it no longer happens. This would have been a Con, but it has resolved itself.

I use the 1 and 2 TB G-Drives with the FW 800 interface for photo and video editing with Photoshop, Lightroom and Premiere. They have been fast and reliable for the last two years, no problems. I had planned to use the Esata connection but, based on reading, the speed increase is not sufficient to warrant to expense.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
These are great drives, and I have in the last 2 years now bought 3 of them. They sit on my desk in a stack, chained together with FireWire800 cables. Some don't like the bright light - I actually like it because I know that the computer is still churning away on a FCP7 process when I'm in the other room. The only thing that is a hassle is that these drives "sleep" after a bit and if you wake the computer or access drives after not doing so for a little bit, there can be a lag when the drive motor gets up to speed.

I like the G-Drive because is cheaper and smaller that the G-Raid. I use the G-Drive for films. I am an independent film maker and moving images take up a lot of space. The G-Drive gives u a lot of space in a little container.

I have always had issues with my external drives dying after about a year or so. I need redundant backup for my business and always get anxious when a drive goes out leaving me with no backup of my files.
I read a lot of reviews and decided on the 2TB G-Drive based on other positive reviews. I have had this drive for a couple of months and am very pleased so far. It was just plug and play for my mac.
I gave only four stars since I have not had the drive that long.
