The Sony MDR-NC33 offers high-quality audio and terrific noise cancellation in a portable in-ear headphone. Powered by a single AAA battery, the MDR-NC33 features 13.5mm neodymium drivers to provide a rich, natural sound with a wide frequency response. The soft eartips sit comfortably in your ear for a snug fit that helps to naturally block ambient sound.

When the noise-cancelling feature is turned on, the circuitry listens to the sounds around you with a built-in microphone and sends out an opposite signal to cancel the unwanted sound, effectively reducing ambient noises by up to 90%. A built-in monitor function allows you to minimize audio playback, letting you hear your environment without removing the headphones. The standard 3.5mm plug provides compatibility with MP3 players, CD players, and more, while the included airplane adapter lets you use your headphones when you fly. A carrying pouch is included for convenient storage.

First off, it's important that one understands what noise-cancellation headphones do. When on, they listen to your environment and instantaneously play frequencies which(to an extent) cancel out the frequencies which are produced in your environment(the cancellation frequencies are not audible). The currently available devices do not mute all sound.

From my experience with them, noise cancellation headphones tend to work best with low frequencies. As the pitch increases, the circuitry seems to be less effective, particularly as the volume of the sound increases(this is why noise cancellation headphones are kind of pointless for blocking out the noise one hears walking down the street- there are plenty of loud, higher pitched sounds all around.)

The result of these properties is that in an office environment, low hum machine noise is virtually eliminated, while higher pitches are reduced to a far lesser extent, depending on distance and volume.

These buds are even better for the office than your typical noise-canceling "cans" (including the Bose) for two reasons: First, they're buds, and buds on their own are "noise-isolating" even without the noise-cancellation circuitry. Second, the circuitry produces a perceptible noise floor(this is the sound one typically gets in headphones when you turn the volume up high while nothing is playing) which makes it even harder to hear chatter, yet is hardly noticable after a few seconds. It should be noted that you might be bothered by this noise floor sound, and if you think you'll be in an environment devoid of chatter, the Bose will be more effective with virtually no noise floor. If there is chatter however, the Bose will let that sound through quite clearly.

Overall, I find the noise isolation, noise cancellation and perceptible noise floor to be a triple threat against ambient machine noise and background chatter. Again, don't expect these(nor any noise cancellation headphones) to place you in an audio vacuum.

None of the noise-canceling earbuds do well on noise canceling--this pair does about as well as expected in that department.

I will comment on the design of the Sony earbuds, though. It is pretty bad. The battery housing is awkwardly positioned too high up the cord--it might work if you are short or high-waisted or pull your pants up to your armpits and wear it on the belt, but it does not work well for me (I am an average-sized person, not super-tall). The clip constantly comes undone from the hem of my shirt and pulls the left earbud out of my ear.

There is a spool they give you to roll up the other side of the cord, which is quite long. The spool then dangles below the battery unit as you wear it. The earbuds also do not provide a good fit--they fall out constantly.

Comments about Sony MDR-NC33 Noise-Cancelling In-Ear Stereo Headphones:

This headphones may not cancel all the noise on a walk in the middle of manhattan, but it does really help! I can listen to my music without havint to go over than 10/30, and it blocks everything arround me, for a full experience I use 15/30 and I can't hear anything around me, thankfuly it has a Monitor Button. This is the second time I try a Noise CAncelling and this model was the best.

Comments about Sony MDR-NC33 Noise-Cancelling In-Ear Stereo Headphones:

While the sound quality isn't what you would call spectacular the noise reduction certainly is for the price. As is the case with most noise reduction systems the MDR-NC33s are best at cutting out continuous sounds like jet engines or trains (which these are particularly good at) but not so good at variable sounds like talking or screeching of metal on subways (which the plugs do a fair job at isolating). Very good for the price.

Comments about Sony MDR-NC33 Noise-Cancelling In-Ear Stereo Headphones:

This is my first set of NC headphones and I have been missing out. I commute on the subway daily and it's allowed me to listen at lower volumes without the background noise. The sound quality is fantastic with the bigger 13.5mm drivers. I am not a fan of the cord though as it's a little cumbersome with the NC circuit in the middle. But I'll get over it!

Comments about Sony MDR-NC33 Noise-Cancelling In-Ear Stereo Headphones:

The Sony MDR-NC33 headset has good active noise canceling properties for the price. I bought this set to replace the Sony NC22 set I had lost. It is very similar in design, but the NC22 has smaller buds for the ear, which worked well under my helmet and when laying on my side. I am unable to test the two side-by-side but it seems to me the NC22 did a slightly better job blocking out noise as well. They stay in place well during exercise.

Just plug in & step into silence!
They provide passive isolation (have always loved ear-buds for that reason) plus active noise cancellation when you need it, which is quite effective.
            Cons-
The NC unit is not detachable.
Treble (High frequency response) could have been better.

I use the product for everyday use. The way it feels on my ears is great. I can't hardly feel that it's there even for a long period of time, very comfortable. The only thing is even if it's a noise cancelling earphone, I can still hear the noises around me thou it eliminates at least 80% of the chatter specially when Im in the subway. But for the price, it's not too bad.

I just used these on two long flights to Europe and recommend them. I found myself using them while watching a movie and almost forgot I was on the plane. They don't completely block out engine noise, but they go a long way and make listening to music and movies pleasurable. I found I can wear them for several hours without discomfort. They have what seems to be a good tonal range with a full bass, without distortion.

Comments about Sony MDR-NC33 Noise-Cancelling In-Ear Stereo Headphones:

Nice headphones, just used them on a trip to Miami. Noise reduction is primarily achieved by the isolation than active noise reduction, but it does get rid of some low frequency engine noise. Good for its price and size.

This is the third pair of Sony Noise-Cancelling earbuds that I have purchased. This latest model is the most comfortable. The earbuds also have a snugger fit which translates to better sound.

Comments about Sony MDR-NC33 Noise-Cancelling In-Ear Stereo Headphones:

My office is pretty noisy so I bought these headphones to block out the chatter and background noise that pretty much gets on my nerves.

Even without turning on the active noise cancellation on the headphones, the earbuds blocks out a lot of the sounds already (with music on of course). I only turn the active noise cancellation on when the noise of people chatting gets pass the music. When it's active, all background ambient noise are virtually eliminated.

The earbuds comes with 3 different sizes and once I found the ones for me, they are very comfortable. I wanted these instead of over the ear headphones and they worked better than i expected.

Make sure you clip the battery compartment onto your clothing as it is relatively heavy.

Sounds great, good bass, good range all around.

Comments about Sony MDR-NC33 Noise-Cancelling In-Ear Stereo Headphones:

This headphones have great audio quality due to the large diameter of the speakers, but the noise reduction system for which i bought them is clearly not working. In the traffic are not working, on the street are not working, In the subway are not working, i didn't tested on a plane because i'm not traveling so much.
So this lead me to the question how they calculated a 90% noise reduction. I think it's something purely mathematic, but in reality the sound will still enter in the ear. Anyway, you'll get a 50-60-maybe 70% reduction because of the design, like you'll get with any earphones like this which enter deep in the ear.

So think twice before buying, you'll have to carry the device for nothing, you can't remove it. I'd give them 4 stars if was removable.

A good thing is that the jack will work with the first generation iPhones.
