The Mac Box Set from Apple is a cost-saving bundle that includes the full version of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, iLife '09, and iWork '09. It is targeted at owners of Intel Macs who are still using the Mac OS X 10.4 operating system, as it is the only way for those users to upgrade directly to Snow Leopard.

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is the long-awaited successor to Apple's revolutionary Leopard operating system. This version of the operating system will give Tiger users all of the dramatic upgrade features found in Leopard, as well as the performance and functionality enhancements delivered by Snow Leopard. It is the first version of OS X that does not support Macs that use PowerPC G3, G4, and G5 CPUs.

Tiger users will appreciate the streamlined look and feel that Snow Leopard will bring to their Intel Mac. The operating system, which is optimized for 64-bit operating systems, adds an enhanced Finder with Cover Flow, a 3D dock with Stacks, Time Machine backup, Quick Look file previews, iChat with screen sharing, multiple virtual desktops via Spaces, integrated Boot Camp support, and much more.

Because OS X software engineers were able to concentrate their efforts on writing code for Intel Macs, the operating system performs much better than previous versions. Most applications are completely written in 64-bit code, making them more secure, stable, and speedy when compared to legacy 32-bit apps. New underlying technology, including Grand Central Dispatch and OpenCL, give Apple programmers the tools necessary to fully take advantage of multicore processor systems, such as the Intel Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, and Xeon CPUs that power most Intel Macs.

The core application of OS X is Finder, from which you launch applications and browse files on your hard drive. In addition to speed enhancements, Snow Leopard's Finder has been enhanced with a more customizable Spotlight search and enhanced icon views. OS X's Exposé, which is used to take a quick look at open windows, is now integrated into the Dock, allowing you to quickly view open windows on an application-by-application basis if desired. Desktop stacks, which allow users to access folders directly from their Dock. Stacks are scrollable, allowing you to navigate through them to locate a specific file.

QuickTime X, Apple's video player, now includes basic video editing tools. You'll be able to trim extra footage from videos, and then upload them to MobileMe or YouTube with ease. iChat has also been improved, now requiring less bandwidth for video chat, and offering 4 times the resolution for iChat Theater presentation broadcasts. For web browsing, Safari 4 is included. This iteration of Apple's web browser is much snappier than before, delivering up to 50% faster JavaScript support, resulting in more responsive web pages.

Of course, the tried and true Mac interface is retained by Snow Leopard, albeit a bit snazzier than that of Tiger. All of the expected bundled applications and modules are still there in familiar places: Spotlight search, Apple's venerable Mail client, iCal scheduling, the ever-handy Address Book, iTunes, and Photo Booth. Advanced users are still able to work with Terminal, Disk Utility, Automator, AppleScript, and Xcode.

Snow Leopard is a substantial update for Tiger users. It adds extensive functionality for a more enjoyable computing experience. Users will appreciate the ease of Quick Look, the versatility of Stacks, the data protection provided by Time Machine, and greatly enhanced accessibility features.

iLife '09 is an all-in-one creativity suite for Apple computers. It includes the popular iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb, and iDVD applications for Mac OS X.

These applications give you the creative tools necessary to get the most out of your Mac: Organize, edit, and share photos with iPhoto. Create home movies with iMovie, and share them with family and friends with iDVD. GarageBand allows aspiring Mozarts to create innovative musical compositions. iWeb ties this all together, allowing you to publish photos, music, and video on the web.

iWork '09 is a suite of productivity applications for Apple computers. The suite includes a word processor (Pages), spreadsheet (Numbers), and a presentation application (Keynote).

iWork is an excellent productivity option for the Mac. It is fully compatible with files created with Microsoft Office, and can export documents into Office file formats. You can use the iWork.com web service to collaborate with Windows users.

Comments about Apple Mac Box Set:

I surfed the internet and a lot of other sources for the Snow Leopard (10.6) upgrade from Tiger (10.4), and found the best price on bhphotovideo.com. Installing Snow Leopard from Tiger was easy, flawless, and it did not take very long. Apple makes Tiger owners buy the Mac Box Set which includes iWork and iLife, something that I did not really need or want. The people at apple say it is so everything is updated together, but to me it is just a way to charge more money. When you buy all three together the package is less expensive than buying them separately. The issue for me was that I did not want or need iWork and iLife, but apple makes it so Tiger users have no choice but to buy all three if they want to use Snow Leopard. Check your Tiger processor to make sure your Tiger is compatible; it has to have an Intel processor and a minimum of 1 GB of memory prior to installation. With that being said, I am pleased with my Snow Leopard upgrade purchase. In addition, the only difference that I noticed between Tiger and Snow Leopard is speed...going from 512 megabytes to 2 gigabytes might be one of the reasons for that (I also upgraded the old 60GB – 5400 rpm hard drive to a 500 GB 7200 rpm hard drive) - Snow Leopard certainly has more bells and whistles than Tiger did so I am happy with it. I now have all current updates (iTunes, iWorks, and iLife) that Tiger was not able to give me.

Comments about Apple Mac Box Set:

I really needed to upgrape my tiger to snow leopard and this mac box set is an easy way to do it. It took little time to install and it's been smooth sailing ever since. Plus the price was right on. I haven't really used iLife or iWork yet, so it's not the most thorough review, but so far so good.

Comments about Apple Mac Box Set:

Although I was used to Tiger, there were some pitfalls that I couldn't seem to get around. The largest of which was the finder window always opening on the same folder, regardless of where I had been before.
Snow leopard is a fast, beautiful OS, with a few bells and whistles that are well worth the investment. I really enjoy the ability to browse through photos, programs, etc with the expanded view window. I have Adobe Bridge, but it seemed unnecessary to use such a robust program when I just wanted to find a picture to show friends.

The one huge pitfall, and I know people keep talking about it, is the lack of compatibility with other key programs. The reason I waited so long to get this, was I needed to update my Final Cut Studio before I could head to Snow Leopard. A friend of mine warned me that installing SL made parts of FCP Studio 1 inoperable. Therefore... huge investment time, but it was worth it.

Comments about Apple Mac Box Set:

This was the first time I'd upgraded on a Mac. I upgraded from Tiger on a Mac Pro, and it went flawlessly. So far, no problems with compatibility on any of my programs. The first "Time Machine" backup took a while, but now it's invisibly backing up my system to an attached USB hard drive. [...]

Comments about Apple Mac Box Set:

iLife and iWork are great products that I would have bought gladly as separate purchases from the Tiger upgrade.

Unfortunately, I was somewhat led to believe by Apple's website (and I think I'm not the only one) that I needed to buy this entire box set to upgrade Tiger. This is not true...

If you just want to upgrade Tiger and not pay for iLife and iWork, you can purchase the Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade for $30 and it will be able to upgrade your Tiger OS to Snow Leopard.

Despite this, I am still giving this product 4 stars because the additional programs are worth the price. They are better and feels much more well thought out than their comparable Microsoft Office and Windows counterparts.
