Windows 7 Ultimate from Microsoft is the long-awaited successor to the ubiquitous Windows Vista operating system. Building upon Vista's impressive feature set, Windows 7 adds many features which simplify the way you use your PC, as well as the way that your PC connects to the world.
The Ultimate edition of Windows 7 is designed to meet the needs of business and home use alike. It omits none of the features that are found in the Home Premium or Professional editions of the software. These include improved desktop navigation, improved speed, the Internet Explorer 8 web browser, Windows Media Center, and HomeGroup networking.
Other carry-over features include Windows XP Mode, which allows you to run legacy applications in a true virtualization of Windows XP. You'll also be able to join Domains, which is often a requirement for connecting to corporate networks. Finally, the Professional edition adds the ability to backup your system to a home or business network.
The Ultimate edition adds BitLocker, which allows you to encrypt data on your hard drive and other storage devices. Encrypting data is critical in environments where it is imperative that sensitive data does not fall into the wrong hands. You'll also be able configure the OS to use any of 35 languages, making the Ultimate edition an excellent choice for multilingual users.
Both the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the operating system are included on the disc, allowing you to install the edition which best suits your needs.

... but was it worth it?For the average home user, Ultimate only offers two features over Home Premium - Bitlocker and extra language packs. I solely got this upgrade for the Bitlocker feature - I don't speak another language let alone 35 other languages. On the manufacturers website it states "If you encrypt data drives (fixed or removable), you can unlock an encrypted drive with a password or a smart card, or set the drive to automatically unlock when you log on to the computer."However, after installing Ultimate and trying to enable Bitlocker I was informed by the installer that my computer (brand new as of June 2011) does not have a TPM chip. It then informed me that my only alternative was to insert a USB flash drive which I would have to use like a physical key and insert it every time I want to start the computer up.This was not explained on the manufacturers website. I guess it wouldn't be too often that I reboot the computer but still means another device I need to carry around at all times (and not lose). As a result, I haven't enabled Bitlocker yet (until I work out all the pros/cons of the USB key) and thus it is [$] not well spent. There are probably much cheaper encryption solutions that do not have the same issues. So the moral of the story is - do your research before you buy!

It is a good product. The reason I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate, was an ability to use a second language (keyboard) on my computer. What I received was a product key,[...] If one wants to spell check in the second language in needs to downoad additionas software. Process is not defined in the package and is not eazy to find the information.

Comments about Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate (Anytime Upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium 32/64-bit):
I got a great deal on a refurbished 17 inch Dell laptop with 64 bit Win 7 (431 from Dell full warranty). I do low level development and want to run Win XP. Since only Win 7 systems are being sold now, my best choice is running WinXP under Win 7. I used the Win 7 upgrade and downloaded MS software for virtual Win XP. The displayed virtualization was primitive, the window small, the colors 16 bit. I'm getting old, I bought a large screen to make it easy for me to see. Uninstalled MS stuff, removed upgrade. Downloaded free VMWare player. Now I have a 4gig WinXP machine that works just the way I tell it to. I also tried the VMWare WorkStation software, it worked as advertised, but I'm happy with the free virtualized 17in XP laptop.

The problem with purchasing the "anytime upgrade" is that Microsoft no longer supports the "anytime upgrade" from Vista to 7

The reason I bought it was to be able to use my scanner;( HP and worked fine with XP) thanks HP for not updating your drivers. Windows 7 upgrade to ULTIMATE says that you can run older XP programs. Well it did not work. Can't get the scanner to work, I should have just bought a new scanner from anyone except HP.

Comments about Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate (Anytime Upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium 32/64-bit):
This is a quick upgrade from the base Windows 7 Home to Ultimate version using a license key to unlock it on one computer. The key feature that I was looking for with Ultimate was the ability to encrypt my hard drive and NAS server using Bitlocker. The upgrade is very quick and the encryption process itself was very straightforward. I chose Bitlocker functionality mainly due to compatibility and ease of use-can't beat the all-in-one solution and the performance hit is relatively minor. This would not be recommended in an enterprise setting or multiple machines but it does what it's designed to for my small business.
