The ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet (160GB, Black) is a computer in your pocket; quite literally. Powered by the famed Android open source operating system, the Internet Tablet is faster and more streamlined than past models. Use the ARCHOS 5 for more than your music - play games, watch movies, view photos, even get directions, view Microsoft documents, watch TV, and then some.
The hard drive memory gives you expanded storage capabilities compared to the flash based players. Take your music, movies, photos and more everywhere you go - without having to choose between what to take and what to leave at home. And with the 5 inch touch screen display, you'll navigate all those media files with ease, see big, beautiful photos, and watch movies without having to squint at your screen.
Aside from storing your media collection the ARCHOS 5 also features built-in Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) with an OMAP 3440 processor and DSP running at up to 800MHz for responsive Internet browsing. You can also access the web through your Bluetooth and 3G enabled mobile phone; in most cases without even having to pay an extra service fee, if data access is already a part of your service plan.
The Internet capabilities open up even more ways to utilize the Tablet. Purchase apps and games, and gain access to web TV and radio stations. There's also an email program and the ARCHOS Media Club where you can buy or rent films and music.
With the Internet Tablet you can also find your way around most major cities in North America and Western Europe thanks to the optional GPS navigation service. The ARCHOS 5 comes with a free 7 day trial to the Tele Atlas, a service which provides you with pedestrian and driving maps. Pedestrian maps give you a 3D view of the city, letting you find your way with realistic views of buildings and monuments - just like they appear in real life.
Aside from being preloaded with a number of useful applications, such as eBuddy IM, Droidin, QuickPedia, and CraigsPhone, the player also features AppsLib, a convenient way to download and purchase even more applications with just a click. And to help you organize and find all those apps the ARHOS 5 features an extended homescreen. Shift between landscape and portrait mode for placing apps where you want them and finding them with ease.
All in all, if you're looking for a way to do pretty much everything a standard laptop does, but in the palm of your hand, the ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet has you covered.

I have purchased the last four generations of the Archos Media Tablet the AV500, Archos 504, Archos 605 and now the very impressive Andriod based IMT 5.
First of all it is fully touch screen and those used to the Apple Itouch or Iphone would be feel right at home with the Archos 5 touch screen. The Archos 5 is so much better than the Apple Itouch because the picture quality is so much higher resolution, the screen so much bigger and the the Hard Drive capacity so much bigger. I found playing standard definition videos crystal clear and the 720p High Definition videos as good as my top of the line 6 month old 52 inch Sony full high definition TV, just beautifully stunning. The Audio quality as with all Archos products exceptional.
I do travel a lot and this is such a great gadget to have, for one you get to watch what ever you like and second the battery life is impressive, I seem to get up to 7 hours playing standard definition videos and with the optional battery pack and extra 4 hours.
Archos has spent a lot of time and money improving the Internet Browsing on the tablets and the with the Archos 5 it shows also they are now going head to head with apple with it widgets and downloadable apps.
In fact it is probably easier to list the things the Archos 5 doesn't do, it is just that good. Maybe on my next generation wish list I would ask for an OLED display, replacable battery, High Definition record up to 1080p and 1080p playback. However well done Archos the Archos 5 is a fabulous device.

I considered returning this device when I learned of all its short comings. However it serves the original reason why I purchased it very well. I have high end audio systems and I was noticing a difference between iPod MP3's and CD's. That difference is best described as rock music that is recorded in a "wall of sound" mode seemed clipped. You can look up what "wall of sound" means in Wiki.
My primary reason for purchasing this device was I wanted a device with massive storage so I could store my 1000's of CD's as uncompressed wav files. For this purpose the Archos 5 was perfect. It also has a better music interface than the iPod because it takes advantage of its large screen. If you are looking for a portable music player that you can setup to obtain the best possible replay from your CD collection this is the device.
Now for the bad news. If you are purchasing mainly this because it has an Android implementation look elsewhere. The AppsLib seems highly filtered compared to other Android devices and when I inquired about it I was told by Archos support many applications don't show up because they are qualified for Archos's larger screen. There are huge holes in the applications available such as Pandora which plays almost anything known to mankind that was recently built to connect to the internet. Pandora plays on every other Android device I checked including Android phones.
Next the really bad news. When in friendly manner I tried to contact Archos support about this I would describe it as one of the worst support experiences I have had in years. The only way to describe their attitude was highly defensive and combative. Their attitude is we having nothing to do the Android applications and essentially don't bother us again. It was very clearly the attitude of a company that is NOT committed to mainstreaming its device into the Android ecosystem. While Archos doesn't own these applications they could do like other Android devices markers and encourage key mainstream applications to be deployed on their device (e.g. Pandora, iHeartRadio). The "we aren't responsible" attitude shows a clear lack of commitment to Android so don't expect a robust set of Android applications for this device.
Now the horrible news. This is an Android 1.6 platform which among other things it does not support Flash Lite in the Browser. When I inquired in a friendly if it was even technically possible to upgrade this device to 2.1, understanding there is no commitment to do so, again support got highly defensive and combative. Makes me wonder why they won't share basic information like that and if they covering up this is a dead end device.
So I would suggest buying this device if the capabilities it is shipped with meet your needs and don't plan on a robust Android ecosystem to enhance it…

I received My Archos 5 IT just after Christmas 2010. I use it mostly to surf the web, research, and as an entertainment system. The storage for audio and video is more than I will need 147 Gig usable. I can also use it as an external hard drive if I need to move data. The construction is great. well built, almost over built.
The down side is it is Android 1.6. I did just install the newest patch that Archos released. (Nov 2010) The battery live on my unit is not very long due to the HDD installed. This unit will never officially be able to run Android 2.2 or later versions. There are options to allow you to dual boot the system. Several blogs are available for trouble shooting issues. One also has a version of Android 2.2 for the 5IT. Over all I love it and Plan to use it for presentations at work.

i bought 2 of this Archos 5 it for my girlfriend and myself. I personally love it. among all archos products, A5IT is the only one includes GPS yet run with android. For a small unit like this, Win7 is too much for the CPU, adroid market gives alot of options on apps you can have on it. The size is like a PSP yet you can do alot more with it... only draw back is that..... it is with android 1.6 which doesn't support flash 10, if it can be upgraded to Android 2.2, that will be perfect! Also.... if you think this one is too bulky and thick, pay a little bit more, get a 64GB slim one. Afterall this is a cool toy.

I purchased this as a gift for my 11 year old son. We were both very disappointed. It required an update right out of the box, which is fine except that it would not download via wi fi. i had to copy the file to my pc and paste it into the drive of the device. Then the website which provides the "apps" for the device could not be opened. So I repeated the loading of the app for the site...and after 2 hours of tweaking I gave up. Upset to find that it is not "approved" for many Android apps and it does not run "flash" video. Returned it and am looking at ipod touch and Zune HD instead.

I've had a number of Archos audio/video products. I purchased the latest Archos 5 Internet Tablet and found it to be a great product. Internet capabilites are much better and easier to surf the web. I like the number of apps available. I like that I can view MS Word & Excel files. I like the GPS option to buy. The main reason I purchase the Archos is because of its storage capabilities. Although the itouch is sexier looking, it just doesn't have the storage capabities of the Archos. Cons: Some PDF's don't open. Also, the sound of the music has less of a punch to it than its last model. This model has a lower bass and volume to it, but overall the sound is still good. It does freeze up some times, but not very often. Overall, I give it two thumbs up!

The Archos 5 Internet Tablet is great because of its large screen which makes it very easy on the eyes. The internet browser is extremely fast for a hand-held device. The only problem I have with the unit is that it will not play online videos such as Youtube videos.

Seemed like a great idea - yet does not do what it is advertised to do as an Internet Tablet - it will NOT play YouTube videos. Very disappointed, will ask for my money back. I shouldn't have to do a lot of searching and fixing to make this happen, this is why I bought the product, believing it would perform as advertised.

I wanted a GPS and an MP3 player and something to watch videos on and something to keep track of appointements. I found the archos 5 instead of buying all of them separately. I was a bit timid when buying because of all the poor reviews out there. Mine has been great - all that I thought it would be. Just wish it had itunes so I didn't have to convert all of my music.

I recently purchased my Archos 5 and so far, I am quite pleased with it. MKV files can be played with subtitles (screen quality is excellent), manga viewing for both downloaded and online images is superb, and internet surfing is quick and efficient (unlike with the Archos 5 of the previous gen, emailing is also now available). The only complaint I have with the device is the battery life; I highly recommend downloading an app to conserve energy.
I should also note that you need to download the latest firmware as soon a your device is charged. Without the firmware, the device is HIGHLY unstable and will freeze up.

This is the first Archos I have gotten and thus far it has been working great. Yes it is a little on the bigger side and makes it hard to carry around everywhere I want to but the storage capacity is huge and fits all my music and a good portion of my movies. the main downside for me right now is that I bought this to replace my Ipod Touch and the app marketplace for android pales in comparison to that of the ITunes app market. Hopefully there will end up being more apps on this market available in the future. Other than that, there are no complaints from me with this product. It plays practically every format of video that I have (with a couple exceptions) and even though the battery doesn't last forever it still manages long enough where I only have to throw it on the charger every night or so.

The Archos 5 Internet Tablet is a great idea but is not fully ripe. It can play most forms of video and most google apps work for it. I use it mostly for video files in MKV. It is a fantastic video player. Id say the music player is average but, you can use separate android programs to play music if you dont like the default one. My personal favorite app is AVC which allows you to read comic books.
The down side is that the Archos is still buggy, frequent crashes still happen, but, it is no where near as bad as when I first got it you just have to make sure to get the firmware updates. All in all it is a great product if you are looking for a large screen video player with tons of storage.
