Designed for pros and semi-pros alike, the Canon EOS 7D is a high-performance digital SLR, that features the resolving power of an 18-megapixel APS-C format CMOS sensor and dual DIGIC 4 image processors that enable 8 frames-per-second capture of high-definition, low-noise imaging at sensitivity levels up to ISO 12800.
In addition to high-definition still images the Canon EOS 7D can also capture true HD 1080p video at 30 frames per second. Video clips can be up to 12 minutes in length or 4GB in size, and you can make full use of all Canon EF and EF-S-mount lenses, which enables an exceptional range of creative visual possibilities. And to ensure clean, blemish-free image files, the 7D employs a dual dust-reduction system.
The EOS 7D's Intelligent Viewfinder enables 100% viewing of the total image area, and features a transparent LCD overlay option that enables advanced data display within the optical viewfinder including user-selected AF modes, a spot metering circle, and on-demand grid lines. In addition to the 7D's optical viewfinder a Live View mode enables you to compose, review, and edit images using the camera's 3", 920,000-dot TFT LCD. The 7D also features a Dual Axis Electronic Level and tilt display that enables you to adjust the roll and pitch of the camera in 1° increments, using the viewfinder or LCD.
For continuous shooting sequences, the 7D can capture bursts of up to 126 JPEGs (large) when using UDMA CF memory cards, or 15 when shooting RAW files. An enhanced all cross-type 19-point autofocus system enables extremely accurate AI Servo AF subject tracking and user-selectable AF modes for precise focusing. For metering stills and video, the 7D features a new 63-zone iFCL metering system that takes focus and color data into consideration when establishing exposure times.
The Canon EOS 7D is constructed out of rugged magnesium-alloy and is sealed against dust and weather. The 7D's shutter is equally rugged and tested for up to 150,000 exposure cycles. Images can be recorded to Type I and II, UDMA-compliant CompactFlash cards in either sRGB or Adobe RGB, and you can expect up to 800 exposures per charge using the camera's rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
In addition to a number of different recording size and frame rate modes, the EOS 7D enables easy manual control of exposure, focus and Live View features and even allows for in-camera editing. The large CMOS sensor and compatibility with over 60 lenses provide a wealth of depth-of-field options. And it's all as easy as the press of a button - the EOS 7D has a dedicated Live View/Movie Recording lever with a start/stop button that gets the shooting started fast.
Full HD Video is captured at 1920 x 1080 resolution at 30p (29.97), 24p (23.976) or 25p frames per second, for up to 4GB per clip. Movies are saved as .MOV files and can be viewed in Full HD with HDMI output. Other recording sizes include HD at 1280 x 720 (50p / 60p (59.94) fps) or SD/VGA at 640 x 480 (50p / 60p (59.94) fps).
Display options include: grid, spot metering, AF points display, hide all, zone AF, spot (single-point) AF, AF point expansion and Dual Axis Electronic Level display. The EOS 7D also features a brilliant new Dual Axis Electronic Level and tilt display that aids in achieving perfectly level shots, displaying both roll and pitch in 1° increments, either in the viewfinder or on the LCD.
In addition, Canon's Light Source detection AF automatically compensates the focus by taking into account artificial lighting sources and making appropriate adjustments and the EOS 7D's new Intelligent Macro focusing tracks the object or the cameras movement when shooting close-up, to ensure focus is never lost. AF modes can be customized to suit the situation, ensuring reliable focus, every time.
Since the metering sensor has a color measurement function, exposure errors and focus errors caused by different light sources are minimized; the EOS 7D gives stable exposure from shot to shot in situations where light changes, such as in a theater or concert hall. This makes the EOS 7D ideal for scenes with extreme difference in brightness such as brightly lit scenes or backlit scenes; the camera balances exposure of the main subject at the background, and exposures are not overly influenced by bright areas in the shot.

I've upgraded to the 7D from Canons older, smaller model, the Canon XTi/400D. My other two considerations were the 5D mark II and the 50D. Considering the price, I think the 7D is actually the sweet spot, the Best Buy amongst all of those... More-so, it has features even the current 1D series doesn't.
1. Compared with the XTi/400D
The 7D trumps the older, cheaper 400D in almost all aspects. The 400D was a great little camera to learn photography with, but I can honestly say I outgrew it and needed some extra features (which the 7D delivered, it would turn out), especially as soon as I sold my first photo. It's no surprise really since the 7D is 2 and a half generations younger and 2 classes higher than it. Faster auto-focus and burst rate, bigger viewfinder, more "cropability", better ergonomics, live view, battery life, higher ISO possibilities, better general image quality... need I go on?
2. 7D vs the 50D
When I got to a point where I really needed to upgrade (and before the 7D came out), due to the fact my XTi started falling apart, this was the first camera I ran to. I waited for a friend to buy it and when he let me play with it a bit, what I got were mixed feelings. I'm glad I went with the 7D instead because of the better auto-focus and better image quality. The difference at higher ISO is noticeable. Not dramatic, but it's there. The question really stands - do you need the extra options the 7D provides for the extra money which could go towards another lens. For instance, I don't really need the movie mode of the 7D, but if that is something that's important to you, then the 50D, obviously, isn't worth it. If you shoot at lower ISO's, if you're more of a general hobby shooter, not shooting that much sport or wildlife, the 50D is still an awesome camera and I'd recommend it.
3. 5D mark 2 vs 7D
Well...this is a hard one. The 5D2 is also a camera I -almost- bought. There are many fronts on which these two cameras battle, but the full frame sensor is a factor you can't put into numbers. The extra width, more logical lens collection combos, even bigger viewfinder... and a slower and less accurate autofocus, slower burst rate... The 5D2 would be an awesome camera to pair up with the 7D, since they're both intended for a different market, if they were only matched in price. For me, it's not worth the difference, even though I shoot a lot of landscapes and portraits.
In conclusion, I'm delighted with my purchase and you may consider it highly recommended - by me :)

Things that are great about it:a. Focus system of the camera is amazingb. Camera's ergonomics are greatc. Acceptable noise at high ISOd. Very good burst system, so fast.Things that are NOT great about it:a. Unfortunatly, seventeen days after I bought the camera, it stopped to work, displaying an error 20 on LCD of the camera. After that I can not use the camera anymore. When I claimed with Canon Support Department [...] for a replacement, they didn't agree with that and said it would only be possible to repair it. Only seventeen days using to have a camera repaired, I took about 150 shots.I was so disappointed with Canon [...] I really wouldn't like to have this NEW camera repaired, but it should be replaced, makes more sense in this case.

Comments about Canon EOS 7D SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
I am a professional photographer and also make music videos. I already owned a Canon EOS 40D and loved it, but needed to upgrade to the 7D for videos. I absolutely love it and am exceedingly happy with my purchase. My only negative so far is that the AF feature for shooting stills requires an extra step than in the 40D and there is no AF tracking feature in the video mode.

This was an upgrade from a Canon Xsi (450D). I purchased it with a Canon L-series lens (16-35mm). I also use this camera with a Canon 100-400 L-series lens. Very happy with this purchase, and very impressed with B&H photo. Very fast camera, especially when used with the 16-35mm F/2.8L. I purchased this camera and these lenses for landscape and bird photography.

I shoot a wide variation of subjects and this camera performs in every aspect, and then some. It's fast focus, high quality, and stabilazation makes it a perfect fit for any photographer. And it's clean functions allow you to shoot advanced shots with ease. Some perks are its fast speed, high iso for low light, and a sleek display, But it's biggest perk makes it a photographer and videoggraphers best friend. It's video feature is beyond flawless. Even it's mic system is superb. I honestly can't say anything bad about the 7d. It will work well for any professional who gets there hands on one.

I have had over the years 4 canon rebel cameras and always loved them. Being a professional portrait photographer I felt it was time to upgrade to a D series camera. I could not be happier. My favorite feature of the 7D is the AF points, there are 19 of them and really allow for creative photographing. This camera is also incredibly fast and the picture quality is amazingly sharp. The only two negatives that I have experienced is the camera weight but it's not unusual for a larger slr and also the auto white balance is not good in the studio but setting the white balance to flash mode works great.

This product is so well worth the money , how it's made as well as how it preform. I truly love everything about this canon 7D .
I use the 7D strictly for shooting my 8 and 12 year old daughters soccer game . Sorry to disappoint anyone but for the moment can't find anything bad about this canon 7D. For those pro or semi-pros photographers this is the camera to use. I give it five stars.
Go Canon Go.

Comments about Canon EOS 7D SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
I photograph mainly wildlife, both at longer-distances and as macros, plus natural landscapes. About five years ago, I traded-in frequent-flyer bonus-miles for a "free" Canon Rebel XTi digital camera. At that time, I also separately bought a couple of Canon's L-series lenses. Hardly a day goes by I'm not outside with a camera, despite the season. But, I felt I had reached the feature/quality-limits of that first DSLR, despite careful attention to photographer techniques and LOTS of practice in the field.
Stepping up to the Canon EOS 7D body about a month ago, I am estatic about the BIG differences in exposure quality, color, and expanded features. The high-speed shooting features, in particular, are items I would never be able to overcome in nature photography with the older model. Nearly every item of the exposure decision within a shooting environment can be custom controlled to minimize post-processing. Plus, I love the meatier feel of the 7D in my hands and the layout of the controls.
I have yet to seriously explore HD-video use with this model, so my comments so far are confined to the still-camera features. I sense, though, it will be years before I feel the need to upgrade camera bodies again.

I work in corporate video and this is a great accessory to go along with my 5d! Although, it doesn't have the full frame sensor, it has 60fps which is a huge plus when shooting video. This is also a really great deal. DSLR's are a great alternative to higher end digital video cameras. The quality is sublime. Also, and more notably the pictures it takes are very crisp and precise. Love this camera!

Comments about Canon EOS 7D SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
My favorite camera ever was the EOS-3 - a film camera that had simply superb handling. When I bought my first digital SLR - a Canon D60 (not to be confused with the current 60D) I put my EOS 3 on the shelf and have never used it since. I've owned or used most of the mid-level Canon DSLR's since (10D, 20D, 40D,60D, various Rebels) and each generation the handling gets better. The 7D is FINALLY getting close to the handling of the EOS 3, albeit with slower and less flexible autofocus. The 7D is a real step up from the 40D. It handles better, image quality is better, noise at higher ISO's is down. It handles better than the 60D, and the image quality is slightly better. I bought the 60D for the articulated screen which could be helpful in macro work (but isn't because the autofocus is too slow). I rarely use it in favor of the 7D. I think Canon would have a real winner if it could improve TTL autofocus, add GPS, and finally address the Live View autofocus.

I use it to replace my old 35mm SLR and my old Powershot S30, for outside photos, family pictures, nature, etc. Good speed, good lenses, both new and old works fine. Light weight.
Not too great to bring up to the Mt McKinley summit but for most other pictures. Low light with a good lens is super.

This is my third Canon body and by far my favorite. What really impressed me is how fast an acurate the auto-focus is in contrast to my 40D. Also, when using high-iso the image quality is outstanding even at 6400 iso. The overall feel of the camera is solid. The viewfinder is much brighter. This is truly a camera worth all the hype.
