Designed for pros and semi-pros alike, the Canon EOS 7D is a high-performance digital SLR, that features the resolving power of an 18-megapixel APS-C format CMOS sensor and dual DIGIC 4 image processors that enable 8 frames-per-second capture of high-definition, low-noise imaging at sensitivity levels up to ISO 12800.
In addition to high-definition still images the Canon EOS 7D can also capture true HD 1080p video at 30 frames per second. Video clips can be up to 12 minutes in length or 4GB in size, and you can make full use of all Canon EF and EF-S-mount lenses, which enables an exceptional range of creative visual possibilities. And to ensure clean, blemish-free image files, the 7D employs a dual dust-reduction system.
The EOS 7D's Intelligent Viewfinder enables 100% viewing of the total image area, and features a transparent LCD overlay option that enables advanced data display within the optical viewfinder including user-selected AF modes, a spot metering circle, and on-demand grid lines. In addition to the 7D's optical viewfinder a Live View mode enables you to compose, review, and edit images using the camera's 3", 920,000-dot TFT LCD. The 7D also features a Dual Axis Electronic Level and tilt display that enables you to adjust the roll and pitch of the camera in 1° increments, using the viewfinder or LCD.
For continuous shooting sequences, the 7D can capture bursts of up to 126 JPEGs (large) when using UDMA CF memory cards, or 15 when shooting RAW files. An enhanced all cross-type 19-point autofocus system enables extremely accurate AI Servo AF subject tracking and user-selectable AF modes for precise focusing. For metering stills and video, the 7D features a new 63-zone iFCL metering system that takes focus and color data into consideration when establishing exposure times.
The Canon EOS 7D is constructed out of rugged magnesium-alloy and is sealed against dust and weather. The 7D's shutter is equally rugged and tested for up to 150,000 exposure cycles. Images can be recorded to Type I and II, UDMA-compliant CompactFlash cards in either sRGB or Adobe RGB, and you can expect up to 800 exposures per charge using the camera's rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
In addition to a number of different recording size and frame rate modes, the EOS 7D enables easy manual control of exposure, focus and Live View features and even allows for in-camera editing. The large CMOS sensor and compatibility with over 60 lenses provide a wealth of depth-of-field options. And it's all as easy as the press of a button - the EOS 7D has a dedicated Live View/Movie Recording lever with a start/stop button that gets the shooting started fast.
Full HD Video is captured at 1920 x 1080 resolution at 30p (29.97), 24p (23.976) or 25p frames per second, for up to 4GB per clip. Movies are saved as .MOV files and can be viewed in Full HD with HDMI output. Other recording sizes include HD at 1280 x 720 (50p / 60p (59.94) fps) or SD/VGA at 640 x 480 (50p / 60p (59.94) fps).
Display options include: grid, spot metering, AF points display, hide all, zone AF, spot (single-point) AF, AF point expansion and Dual Axis Electronic Level display. The EOS 7D also features a brilliant new Dual Axis Electronic Level and tilt display that aids in achieving perfectly level shots, displaying both roll and pitch in 1° increments, either in the viewfinder or on the LCD.
In addition, Canon's Light Source detection AF automatically compensates the focus by taking into account artificial lighting sources and making appropriate adjustments and the EOS 7D's new Intelligent Macro focusing tracks the object or the cameras movement when shooting close-up, to ensure focus is never lost. AF modes can be customized to suit the situation, ensuring reliable focus, every time.
Since the metering sensor has a color measurement function, exposure errors and focus errors caused by different light sources are minimized; the EOS 7D gives stable exposure from shot to shot in situations where light changes, such as in a theater or concert hall. This makes the EOS 7D ideal for scenes with extreme difference in brightness such as brightly lit scenes or backlit scenes; the camera balances exposure of the main subject at the background, and exposures are not overly influenced by bright areas in the shot.

I've upgraded to the 7D from Canons older, smaller model, the Canon XTi/400D. My other two considerations were the 5D mark II and the 50D. Considering the price, I think the 7D is actually the sweet spot, the Best Buy amongst all of those... More-so, it has features even the current 1D series doesn't.
1. Compared with the XTi/400D
The 7D trumps the older, cheaper 400D in almost all aspects. The 400D was a great little camera to learn photography with, but I can honestly say I outgrew it and needed some extra features (which the 7D delivered, it would turn out), especially as soon as I sold my first photo. It's no surprise really since the 7D is 2 and a half generations younger and 2 classes higher than it. Faster auto-focus and burst rate, bigger viewfinder, more "cropability", better ergonomics, live view, battery life, higher ISO possibilities, better general image quality... need I go on?
2. 7D vs the 50D
When I got to a point where I really needed to upgrade (and before the 7D came out), due to the fact my XTi started falling apart, this was the first camera I ran to. I waited for a friend to buy it and when he let me play with it a bit, what I got were mixed feelings. I'm glad I went with the 7D instead because of the better auto-focus and better image quality. The difference at higher ISO is noticeable. Not dramatic, but it's there. The question really stands - do you need the extra options the 7D provides for the extra money which could go towards another lens. For instance, I don't really need the movie mode of the 7D, but if that is something that's important to you, then the 50D, obviously, isn't worth it. If you shoot at lower ISO's, if you're more of a general hobby shooter, not shooting that much sport or wildlife, the 50D is still an awesome camera and I'd recommend it.
3. 5D mark 2 vs 7D
Well...this is a hard one. The 5D2 is also a camera I -almost- bought. There are many fronts on which these two cameras battle, but the full frame sensor is a factor you can't put into numbers. The extra width, more logical lens collection combos, even bigger viewfinder... and a slower and less accurate autofocus, slower burst rate... The 5D2 would be an awesome camera to pair up with the 7D, since they're both intended for a different market, if they were only matched in price. For me, it's not worth the difference, even though I shoot a lot of landscapes and portraits.
In conclusion, I'm delighted with my purchase and you may consider it highly recommended - by me :)

Things that are great about it:a. Focus system of the camera is amazingb. Camera's ergonomics are greatc. Acceptable noise at high ISOd. Very good burst system, so fast.Things that are NOT great about it:a. Unfortunatly, seventeen days after I bought the camera, it stopped to work, displaying an error 20 on LCD of the camera. After that I can not use the camera anymore. When I claimed with Canon Support Department [...] for a replacement, they didn't agree with that and said it would only be possible to repair it. Only seventeen days using to have a camera repaired, I took about 150 shots.I was so disappointed with Canon [...] I really wouldn't like to have this NEW camera repaired, but it should be replaced, makes more sense in this case.

Comments about Canon EOS 7D SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
As an amateur photographer I was looking for a well-built body to go along with my now growing collection of higher end lenses. I needed a good enough camera that would not break the bank and would be a worthy upgrade to my aging 30D. I looked at all the lower end cameras and none of them felt right in my medium sized hands. I also didn't like the plastic feel of the cheaper EOS DSLRs and the 5D MII was just outside of my budget. This camera is fast, the improved focus is much faster than my 30D and the high ISO noise is controlled well. I hardly use the Live View, preferring to use the optical viewfinder (call me old school). All in all this is a great camera and I highly recommend it to any advanced amateur looking to move from the Rebel series into a more "Pro" grade body.

This is my second 7D body in less than a year. My confidence in Canon caused me to make this line my camera of constant use as both the yearbook advisor and a professional commercial/industrial photographer. The choice was between the Canon and its chief competitor was made several years ago when I first started out and I have not regretted it one bit.
The 7D has all the bells and whistles that I would need and the Canon lens line is superb. In the end, it is the glass that counts most.

I take mostly portraits and macros. Have only had this camera a few weeks but so far am finding it does a wonderful job of both. I'm really enjoying 'getting to know' my knew friend and look forward to many more shots together.
Highly recommended.

I own a photography studio that is about 1 year old and have been using a rebel T2i and have not realized how much I have been missing! I love the focal point feature as we do a lot of fast action dance competitions in low light, so the multiple focus realllly helps out. One thing that takes a little getting used to is the ease and functionality of the T2i manual mode where it is much easier to change multiple settings quickly, this one takes a little longer (maybe im just not used to it yet)

Essentially the default choice for enthusiasts and professionals of photography. Very good price/quality.
Very good change from my actual EOS 20D , better speed ( 3 FPS to 8 FPS ) so in some conditions like fast Rally pictures the pictures are sharpest and more ( so you can select the best :-) )
I' am very sure that Canon 7D is an excellent camera

I was surprised by how much I could crop an image and still have a usable photo. My old crop sensor camera was a Canon Xsi. There is no comparison between the two. I also own a 5D Mk2 and its nice to have somilar controls. The 7D has a few nice extras in the areas of controls which make it faster to use especially the quick menu. I am very satisfied with this camera.

Comments about Canon EOS 7D SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
I bought this to be a camera used with telephoto lines as it was cheaper to get the 1.6 conversion factor than it was to buy a 800mm lens for wildlife closeups. This with the 100 - 400 lens I have gives me nearly an 800 mm lens. Pictures are great, movies intergrate seemlessly and overall quality is what I expect from Cannon. This is my 7th Canon camera and they have all performed without service except a 50d that after 3 years needed shutter repair. Great camera system, great pictures.

After much consideration between the 5D and the 7
D, I bought the 7D to replace my 40D. There are also functions on the 7D that I enjoy, such as the wireless flash.
The day after getting the 7D I went on a roadtrip up the California coast. The video was epic - better than a friends HD camcorder and portrait/ landscape came out crystal clear.

I've been using another Canon (Rebel XS) and now I think it's time to try a camera with high performance.
I can say this camera is what I was looking for.
The Canon 7D is great to sports and action, very fast shutter speed.
I like so much the Auto Focus system and the many ways you can choose a AF point (even to macro photos), several points or the 19 AF points.
Although it is not a full frame camera, it fulfils all my needs. I prefer the fast shutter speed instead the full frame.
Very good in low light, with high ISO performance.

I purchased this camera with a Canon Battery pack and they are a perfect match for my hands.
I love the res and IQ of this camera. I matched it with the ne Canon 70-300L and what a great union it is. It is a little learning curve coming from the 20D, but not too bad.I'm falling in love with photography again! Have not checked the video, but I didn't buy it for video. You get it, you kmow you want it! Thanks B&H forr being such a great company to do business with.

This is the best camera I have ever owned. It's loaded with features and noise is excellent up to ISO 1600. Not great at 6400, but who cares? It feels good in my hands. The flash control for other Canon flashes is a great tool. The eye-point is good for me with glasses on. The "Q", RAW/JPG, and the Live View buttons are very useful. The picture quality is outstanding for an APS-C. I shoot nature and landscapes.

Comments about Canon EOS 7D SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
Just got back from a seven day exploration with my new 7d and have experienced a wonderful courtship.
The solid magnesium alloy body gives you a sense of freedom to venture further than you might otherwise; bring on the sand and water because this baby is "dust and weather resistant' (exaggerations aside, it did quite well during a trip to the beach, in comparison to my old Canon 20d).
My favorite improved feature is the enlarged LCD screen. Not only is the image crystal clear, but it actually represents what the imported image will look like. To top it off, Canon added a small start/stop switch above the upper right of the LCD screen. First, this switch toggles you between the movie option and still images. Second, by pressing in the button, your view can be changed from view-finder to LCD screen. Pretty neat trick if you find yourself in tight and low light situations.
A few other small items that have been rocking my world:
* The ability to shoot 8 frames a second, or what I like to call, "Hypershooting". It's a really great asset to have if you like making stop motions or are shooting quick moving subject matter. And it's just kind of fun.
* The button above the upper left corner of the LCD screen allows you to switch between jpeg and raw- if you are running out of room while shooting in raw, you can ever so fast switch to the smaller jpeg.
* The * button on the left side allows fast access to pre-set image settings and user-defined ones like color, sharpness, contrast and saturation or pre-set.
Of course there are other exciting traits that this camera has, but I wanted to touch lightly on a few.
The 7d is a friend to the pro, the ecstatic and the blossoming photographer. However, if your shooting is limited but respect high quality images, the Canon T2i is very comparable (less sturdy and nerdy). Same goes if you'll be using the camera in favorable and predictable conditions, opt for the cheaper T2i and spend your money on some nice lenses.

Comments about Canon EOS 7D SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
I'm an "advanced" amature and I've been using Canon EOS (20D and then 50D) products for the past 10 years. The 7D fixes a few things that have annoyed me, in particular the viewfinder. I'm getting the impression that the metering and the autofocus work better on the 7D than on the 50D. This may be attributable to the thrill of a new toy; but it's certainly no worse.
For anyone familiar with the EOS line, the transition to the 7D will be very simple. Although some buttons are different a cursory reading of the manual will orient one properly. All of my lenses from my previous cameras work with the 7D.
I'll probably update this review as I spend more and more time with the camera; using my existing lenses and comparing the images to those taken with the other cameras. It will be interesting to get a really nice lens and see how that compares.
