The EOS 7D offers the enhanced image quality, smooth frame rates and adaptive exposure compensation necessary in a professional movie-making tool. I've upgraded to the 7D from Canons older, smaller model, the Canon XTi/400D. My other two considerations were the 5D mark II and the 50D. Considering the price, I think the 7D is actually the sweet spot, the Best Buy amongst all of those... More-so, it has features even the current 1D series doesn't.
1. Compared with the XTi/400D
The 7D trumps the older, cheaper 400D in almost all aspects. The 400D was a great little camera to learn photography with, but I can honestly say I outgrew it and needed some extra features (which the 7D delivered, it would turn out), especially as soon as I sold my first photo. It's no surprise really since the 7D is 2 and a half generations younger and 2 classes higher than it. Faster auto-focus and burst rate, bigger viewfinder, more "cropability", better ergonomics, live view, battery life, higher ISO possibilities, better general image quality... need I go on?
2. 7D vs the 50D
When I got to a point where I really needed to upgrade (and before the 7D came out), due to the fact my XTi started falling apart, this was the first camera I ran to. I waited for a friend to buy it and when he let me play with it a bit, what I got were mixed feelings. I'm glad I went with the 7D instead because of the better auto-focus and better image quality. The difference at higher ISO is noticeable. Not dramatic, but it's there. The question really stands - do you need the extra options the 7D provides for the extra money which could go towards another lens. For instance, I don't really need the movie mode of the 7D, but if that is something that's important to you, then the 50D, obviously, isn't worth it. If you shoot at lower ISO's, if you're more of a general hobby shooter, not shooting that much sport or wildlife, the 50D is still an awesome camera and I'd recommend it.
3. 5D mark 2 vs 7D
Well...this is a hard one. The 5D2 is also a camera I -almost- bought. There are many fronts on which these two cameras battle, but the full frame sensor is a factor you can't put into numbers. The extra width, more logical lens collection combos, even bigger viewfinder... and a slower and less accurate autofocus, slower burst rate... The 5D2 would be an awesome camera to pair up with the 7D, since they're both intended for a different market, if they were only matched in price. For me, it's not worth the difference, even though I shoot a lot of landscapes and portraits.
In conclusion, I'm delighted with my purchase and you may consider it highly recommended - by me :)

My wife raved for weeks about pictures she was viewing on Facebook that were posted by a number of photographers in Florida. She kept saying, and they shot these with a 7D and a 500 mm lens or a 7D and my (her) lens (the 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.6). I never get pictures like that. So, I bought her the camera and we've been using it for about 2 weeks...and she's still not getting photos "like that" and neither am I. But, that is mostly due to the lousy lighting conditions here in southwest Ohio as compared to those in central and southern Florida.
- Most useful or most welcome features for us so far are
-- 1.6x crop factor delivered by the sensor, which is smaller than what we have been shooting for the last 1-2 years (5D Mark II and 1D Mark IV). Coupled with my 300 mm f/2.8 and 2x extender II or 2x extender III, the subjects we shoot (hawks, owls, eagles, and many common birds) are significantly larger in the viewfinder and in the final photo.
-- New design of the autofocus sensors as well as the additional sensors available over the 5D Mark II and the accuracy of that focus (at least in good light) versus the 5D Mark II (not as good as the 1D Mark IV)
- Trade-offs versus 5D Mark II and 1D Mark IV are
-- Smaller sensor results in significantly more noise in dark subjects and in low-light or when using "higher" ISOs (even 500 and 640 are not nearly as good as the other two cameras)
-- Image quality at any ISO I've shot so far is not as good as the 5D Mark II or the 1D Mark IV in my humble opinion.
-- Extra magnification (crop factor) results in comparitively more shake when used with telephoto lenses; not only is the subject magnified, so are all movements of the user. (Hint: If you have any difficulty with image stability when hand-holding a telephoto lens, that "instability" will be significantly magnified when moving to a 1.6 crop factor sensor like that in the 7D.) If you already use a 1.6 crop-factor camera, you'll be right at home with the 7D.
Overall, my wife loves the camera for the autofocus sensors and even more so for the additional crop factor she gets with the 100-400 mm. I like it for the additional crop factor with my 300 f/2.8 and 1.4 or 1.6 extender, but I don't find the focusing or image quality to be on par with the 1D Mark IV. The 5D Mark II images are far superior as far as noise and overall color, but the 5D Mark II did/does have focusing issues.

This is a replacement for a canon 40d. My first impression is that the menues and controls have been better thought out. This is likely the result of the many iterations between the 40d and 7d. So thanks to all of the consumer complaints, and thoughtful advise.
The speed is wonderful for sports photography, which is my primary use. Focusing appears to be greatly improved. I'm getting a much better percentage of usable shots.
White balance and exposure control appears to be as well. With much less automatic post processing.
The movie capabiltiy is also interesting but this will take a great deal of work to transition to. The LCD is not that easy to use for me as my sight is getting worse with age and fine manual focusing is tough. Even though the LCD screen is much improved.
Overall the feeling, functions, and controls are excellent and it would be difficult to imagine a significantly improved product with this sensor size and price point.

Nothing that is not great with this camera. What helped me most was a DVD canon 7D crash course by Micheal Andrew.Everything about this camera is easy to use and navigate through all the settings once you learn about this camera. I recommend getting the video from Michael's web site. You won't be sorry.Still can't belive the fast focus great imagesand over all high preformance.

I'm late to the game jumping to the 7D. Was trying to hold out to see if they would release a MkII version, but then we scheduled a big trip to Italy this summer, and I wanted something with more resolution to make some big prints from photos of our trip. So far, I'm loving it! The extra focus points are great, as is the viewfinder and nice LCD screen. Live view is nice to have, as is the video capability.
Better low light performance with higher ISO was especially important for me for a lot of the work I do indoors without extra lighting. Perhaps it's not as nice as I had hoped for, but it's definitely a big improvement over the low light performance of my 30D.
I certainly don't regret getting this body this late in its life cycle, even if a new one gets announced later this year or next. I can't see that I will need an upgrade again for at least a few more generations.
Perhaps I'm just not used to all the extra resolution that I get from 18mp as opposed to the 8mp of my 30D, but I do find the RAW images do tend to be a bit software and flatter in general and need quite a bit more work in Lightroom or Photoshop... but, certainly not a problem for web stuff, only for big enlargements or cropping down to a small area of the original image. Still need some more practice with the 7D, though.

Handles way better than a 5D2. Exposure metering is also better. It is also a bit better at white balance.
Image quality is not up to the full frame cameras but not apparent in every image. Overall a great backup wedding camera and a great primary camera for sport shooters.

I'm a field biologist and an enthusiastic amateur nature photographer. I wanted a robust upgrade from my Rebel XT. I've had this camera for a month and have been thrilled by the clarity, speed and functionality. Learning to navigate the buttons and menus was a bit of work but is now becoming very intuitive. This camera is significantly heavier from the lower series but it feels extremely well-equipped to head into the field. I'm thrilled that I went for the 7D instead of the 60D I was choosing between.

I bought this camera as a replacement for my Canon 20D that i used for many years I use it with a battery grip so the battery life is amazing I have never had a problem with low battery I also own a 5D II and use this one with its 1.6 crop to give me a little extra reach for my wildlife photography the high MP allows me to crop my pics and still keep them clean the built in level indicator is a great feature that allows you to check the level of your camera at the press of a button

I've upgraded from Canon 40D to 7D and boy is this upgrade worth it! The shots I can get indoors now are amazing! The colors in the 7D seem to have so much more pop to them too. I haven't even touched the video yet either so that is something I'm really looking forward to exploring. I'm doing my first wedding this weekend with the 7D and looking forward to it.

As a filmmaker and photographer, my work demands equipment that can perform and last. The 7D fits this need perfectly.
The build quality is superb and the overall ergonomics of the camera are great. Plus it doesn't include that annoying little button at the top of the mode dial, like the 60D and 5D mk3.
Pair the body with some L lenses and you really can get some amazing images. Highly recommended for sports and action photography. As the super fast 8fps shooting speed will allow you to capture quick actions, and since it has a crop sensor it will add more range if you have EF Zoom lenses.

I bought this camera as a step up from my Canon Rebel T1i because I need two cameras for a wedding I will be shooting. The camera has many more options for customization. It feels much better in my hands even though it is a bit heavier.The auto focus is a huge step up from the Rebel. That and the better performance at high ISO numbers (I can use it at ISO 2,500 and not be horrified at the results whereas I will only use ISO numbers up to ISO 800 with the Rebel.) were the deciding factors to go with this camera. So far, I am very happy with my choice.
