I've been using this lens on my 7D for a few weeks and it is really a fantastic piece of equipment. Although it is not exceptionally fast, it performs well outdoors, which is where I would use it most. Indoors with a flash it also performs well. The build quality should get special mention. It's better in build quality than my 17-55 f2.8 IS which, although optically fantastic has a price tag that does not reflect the feel of the lens. The 15-85 does not disappoint in this area- it is solid and stout. The lens does not exhibit any "lens creep" as I have experienced with other Canon zooms. As far as image quality, it is sharp as a tack. There is noticeable vignetting at both extremes of the zoom range, but mostly at 85mm. Stopping down a bit seems to improve the situation. Buy this lens in confidence, it's an awesome lens for a crop camera!

I purchased this lens along with a T2i body from B&H; expecting an upgrade in image quality from the EF-S 18-55mm. However, I needed to return one lens due to a very soft corner on the images. The replacement lens has uniform soft corners, so I can't say it was an improvement. Also, I'm encountering strong (almost neon looking) chromatic aberration at wide angles. Vignetting is slight due to the T2i correction setting. Overall, the images are soft (both lenses) and this is quite disappointing due to the price of the lens. The matching Canon ET-78E hood can cast a large shadow when using the built-in flash. Other owners seem to have success with the lens, but this has not been my experience. Lastly, Canon support stated that the EF-S 15-85mm is a "kit" lens and one should not expect sharp image quality. I could not believe that such a comment was made to a customer.

Comments about Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

Just an all around outstanding lens! I won't get into the issues others have with this lens (no included hood, variable aperature, ect..). These things have been discussed and in all reality you should know these facts before you buy so they shouldn't be a shock to you. Focus on my 7D is fast & spot on. I have never had a lens made by anyone that was a silent as this. You do not hear it focus and you do not hear the IS kick in. Sharpness is great even wide open. Before switching to Canon I spent years with Nikon gear (film and digital). I owned Nikon's 16-85mm and their 17-55mm f2.8 lenses for digital. This Canon is sharper, faster and a lot more silent compared to either Nikon. As for build quality, the Canon is much better built than the Nikon 16-85mm. Unless you need a constant f2.8 standard zoom for your Canon crop camera, you need not look beyond this lens!

Comments about Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

This lens is extremely sharp and handles nicely on my Canon 60D. The zoom range makes it an excellent walk-around lens but I also use it for serious portraits and for landscape work. I give it four stars only because its a bit slower than I might like at times, because its still a bit over-priced and because of Canon's mean-spirited policy of not providing a lens hood with all lenses. But all in all, I don't regret my decision to buy this lens.

This was my only lens for almost a year once I switched to Canon. It's versatile and sharp. I get great bokeh with it.
In the first image you can see the sharpness this lens is capable of and the second image shows the bokeh. Both images were raw and processed in ACR with minimal adjustments and no clarity or sharpening.

I wanted a lens I could use every day, from landscapes to flowers, without having to swap lenses all the time. This lens gives me exactly that flexibility, with high-quality images. I can use with wide aperture to give me nice blurred backgrounds, but also narrow it down when I want high-quality landscapes.

Comments about Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I got my T2I in November of 2010. It was my first DSLR and came with the 18-55 kit lens and a 70-300. Both lenses where good to start with and learn. But any anyone with a serious photography interest will outgrow them very fast. My lack of experiences convinced me that I should upgrade to the Canon 18-200 but a more experienced friend convinced me to get prime lens. I bough the Sigma 30mm 1.4. It lacked the convenience of a zoom but I was quickly hooked on the image quality. I immediately started doing research on my next upgrade. I literally read every review I could find on lenses that fit the walk around category. I refused to sacrifice the image quality I have grown used to with my 30mm but also needed a decent zoom and a well built body. All experts pointed to this 15-85 but it was a lot more then I wanted to spend, especially with a baby on the way. I was finally able to get it recently and I can honestly say the wait was worth it. It is fast, quite, well built and delivers amazing clarity. In agreement with almost everyone who handed over the $700-$800 for this lens, I also believe Canon should include a lens hood. That would probably be my only complaint.

Based on various reviews I saw online, this lens has an excellent image quality (despite some issues that you'll see people mention, such as light fall-off at wide apertures)
So this is a great option when stepping up from the 18-135 kit lens (and I like the 15mm wider focal length), but the problem is that it's too expensive! And even at this price you have to pay $30 for the hood separately!

Wow, 4 stop IS is incredible. Lightroom and RAW straighten out the 15 mm. 4 stop IS is incredible on hi mpxl 60 d

Comments about Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I use this as the prime lens on my EOS 60D, and I'm very pleased with its quality and the way it feels in my hand. Occasionally I want a longer focal length, but for 90+% of what I do, this is the lens.

Comments about Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I started out looking for a wide angle for my XSi but just before mistakenly pulling the trigger on the 10-22mm Canon, I realized I needed to upgrade my kit lens first and also that I was approaching landscape photography from the wrong mindset and didn't really need the extreme wide angle yet. I looked at a few lenses including the popular 24-105 L series. Then it was suggested that I look at this lens.

This 15-85mm is supposed to be Canon's EF-S mount equivalent of the 24-105 and while I don't have one to compare to it's supposed to be a similar picture quality as well. Basically L glass in an EF-S body.

In comparison shots the lens is sharper (especially at the wide 15mm end) than my old 18-55mm kit lens (the first generation of the 18-55mm with IS). I've heard the more recent 2nd generation of the 18-55mm with IS is improved so you may not see as much of a difference. Color is better as well. Identical aperture and shutter settings in a controlled environment the old kit lens had slightly washed out colors and slightly bluish tint to whites.

I've read a few reviews about inconsistent sharpness or lens creep. I haven't seen either, but be pro-active and check for both when you first get the lens so you don't find out weeks or months later.

The lens may be a plastic housing but it's definitely durable and solid feeling. The metal mounting plate compared to the plastic I'm used to on EF-S lenses and even the "nifty fifty" 50mm f/1.8 EF mount is a nice touch.

The only two reasons for not giving it 5 stars are first it would be nice if it was faster glass, the variable F stop starting at 3.5 and quickly moving to 4 makes this lens a poor choice if you need it for indoor low light situations especially with no flash. Second is the EF-S style plastic construction. If Canon had put this in an L level chassis it would be enough of a bonus that you might be able to overlook the first reason.

Comments about Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

If Canon made an EF-S L-series lens, this could be one of them. It truly is a wonderful lens. This is a perfect all around lens for portrait, landscape, wedding, and just about anything else you want to do. It's not a fast lens (f3.5-5.6), but when used outdoors or inside with a flash, it's generates nice contrast. The full time manual focus is a plus and the speed that is focuses at is excellent. Might be a little pricey for some, but if you can afford it, you will not regret it. NOTE: This is for Cropped Sensors Only!

I use this lens for general purposes. Its great for when you're walking around taking random shots. The wide angle is especially useful when used in narrow paths where you can't back up to fit everything in the picture.
Not so useful when you need a telephoto lens.

Comments about Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

It came down to this and the 24-105L. Everything I read said this was a great lens, but that I could expect chromatic aberations, etc.. but these could be rectified in Lightroom 3 or as I now know LR 4 as well with a single click. The reviews were correct on both counts. The lens is awesome and I couldn't be happier with my purchase and resulting photos and a savings of $400. Some of the reviews mantioned lens creep, I don't see that at all. I give the lens 5 stars but Canon only gets 4 due to their incredible lack of wisdom in not including the hood or case. Canon folks, generic works just like yours at $6.95 with free shipping. What are you folks thinking?

Love the range. A little on the slow side, but again the range is the money.

It's a much bigger and heavier lens than I thought too... this thing is NOT plastic.

I absolutly LOVE this lens. It is on my camera and goes everywhere with me. I can take closeups, then turn around and take landscapes. I am very glad I also got the EW-78E hood. Being outside for most of my pictures, it keeps the glare off the lens and protects from the dust, which we have alot of around here.
I would recommend both of these to anyone who is on the go and takes alot of pictures, it saves taking several lens with you.
