ATTENTION!!!! Before you decide to return this:For those of you who experienced a nasty HISS is simply because the idiots from Samson ship the Receiver set to the GAIN all the way to the highest. This switch is located on RIGHT side of the Receiver (the one with two antennas that attaches to your camcorder). Just like they did to my old and now illegal and can't use Samson Micro 32, the UM-1 Comes also factory set to -10 and MUST be set to -30. That will be the end of your hiss. Then (if necessary)on the TRANSMITTER turn the volume down using the supplied screwdriver. Next set you camcorder's volume to the middle. Next, as you speak on the LAV, gradually turn up the transmitter's volume until your Audio Meter on your camera's LCD reads near Zero, just below 12DB. Your system is set.I used to have the old Samson Micro 32 and it sounded beautiful. When i received my new UM-1 I was like: What is this horrible hiss??! I spent 3 hours messing with the controls (the ones you control with the mini screwdriver) and the hiss got better but not satisfactory. Then, when I was about to give up and return this, I remembered to check that GAIN switch and BAM! PROBLEM SOLVED and I can now use this with my Sony at same time giving me decent audio from my UM-1 reasonably quiet. To improve sound, you might want to try a more expensive LAV such as the Audio-Technica AT831B - Cardioid Lavalier Condenser Microphone also sold here at B&H and this one came shipped with my Micro 32 in 2006. Excellent Mic.My main Lavaliere system is a $1,500.00 Sony UWP Series. I bought this UM-1 for 2 reasons:1- I want to use my expensive Audio Technica LAV that came with my Micro 32. Now I have 2 Lavs that I can use with the Samson UM-1 PLUS the one that came with it and boy, is that tiny? If it were a white cable, you can probably even put this on a bride (if she doesn't slap you in the face)2- I would NEVER put my $1,500.00 Sony system on anyone that I can't stop and interrupt in case it falls especially a Priest who will drag my radio on the floor and step on my LAV and nothing I can do until the ceremony is over... That's why they make a Samson UM-1 LOL!

I came to realize that this is not a good unit for me. 1 single channel, had to use the lav that came with my Micro 32 as the lav that comes with this unit is junk and I heard occasional dropouts. I used to have a Samson micro 32 for 5 years and I never had to buy another system until the FCC came up with the 700Mhz notice back in 2009.Anyway...I bought a $1500 Sony UWP series that I'm very happy with it. Well for that price it better be good!If you are on a BUDGET or need 2 or more good systems without spending $4,500.00, I juuuuust exchanged my UM-1 for an Azden AZ310LT and I tell you what...I SHOT 2 WEDDINGS (FRIDAY AND SAT.) WITH THIS UNIT (AZDEN AZ310LT) AND IT BLEW BE AWAY MAN! The groom was all the way back somewhere very far, THROUGH WALLS 2 floors below the santuary in the basement while I was in position at the isle and THERE WERE NO HISSES, INTERFERENCE WHATSOEVER!!! I HONESTLY CANNOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE FROM MY SONY UWP-V6!For only $130 difference? For infinite happiness... Buy the AZ310LT without hesitation. The battery also lasted the ENTIRE day! The mic that came with it sounds a s good as the Sony. For those uneducated users...Before you complain about sound...One thing you all have to learn is that there are many different types of lavaliere microphones. The ones [...] from Sony and Azden are OMINI DIRECTIONAL mics DESIGNED to pick up everything in the room which is excellent for a wedding ceremony picking up bride + groom + priest capturing all 3 equally. If you want a lav mic that does NOT capture sound all over more directional you want a UNIDIRECTIONAL lav.

Comments about Samson UM1 Portable Wireless Lavalier Microphone System:
I bought the M1 Portable Wireless Lavalier Microphone System to use with my Canon 7D camera. I thought the receiver looked kind of cheap when I received it [the belt pack looks fine], but looks can be deceiving and I absolutely love my Samson Concert 77 system, so I started following the directions eagerly. Unfortunately, the end result no matter how I configure the system is a background hiss when recording. I did purchase a cable adapter – recommended by B&H – to connect the receiver to the camera, but that does not help either. Maybe it's just me and my limited knowledge of sound equipment, but for the purpose I purchased the system for, video recording, it has been a disappointment. I should add that the belt pack works perfectly with my concert 77 receiver, and the system works fine when connected to my laptop via an Andrea USB Adapter Sound card. As of right now I have not called in for technical support, so maybe these problems will be resolved? I hope so.

Comments about Samson UM1 Portable Wireless Lavalier Microphone System:
Horrible noise floor. Had drop outs on day one, but that's really not the problem. It's the horrible hiss. I set the gain low and the transmitter on negative 30db and it still was horrible. Not sure if it was the mic or the system, but it's unusable for my purposes. Selling it on asap.

The UM1(4)works well. You will have to adjust it for
optimum performance on you're system. For the price I can't complain, add a little EQ and noise reduction in post and you're good to go.
Have extra batteries on hand!

Comments about Samson UM1 Portable Wireless Lavalier Microphone System:
I experienced a little background hiss, but was able to find a sweet spot in the adjustments to minimize it. After processing in editing it sounds pretty good. Having portable true diversity is a big plus when shooting outdoors. I never experienced a dropout, and the range is acceptable.
