Lost 1 star because cross-beam is still too long...
I haven't used any other kits to make any comparisons but this kit is great quality.
The stands are very nice. They are air cushioned which really helps especially if you use heavier devices on them.
The cross-member is adjustable but maybe Manfrotto could've made it collapse to the same length as the stands so the kit could be more compact/ portable.
If you are looking for additional stands, although they only go 8 feet compared to other standard 9 ft models, get this background kit.
Don't forget your orange handled clamps and gaffer tape. They are cheap and helpful when working with paper rolls.
FYI, I went with the Savage paper rolls.

Expensive for a folding innovation
The supports fold nicely in a square shape and lock toghether, carry bag is excellent, if you raise the support max height it will be a little shaky.

I have never used a back drop stand before. I bought this set up because it is a Manfrotto setup. I umbrella kits which use these stands.
I was able to take from out-of-box to full assembly in approx 4 minutes. Nice carrying case as well.

Comments about Manfrotto Background Support System:
Overall, good portable light stand built with attention to detail. Glad I purchsed rather than cheaper alternativies. Good compromise of features and price.
Qualities to appreicate:
Compact, the light stands when folded up attach to each other to occupy minimum space.
Durable for sensible users, The telescoping back drop pole has built in features to be rigid when extended and twisted. Held up well to 9' wide paper roll.
Ease of setup, Setup my self w/ 9' wide paper in less than 30 minutes (first time)
Travels Well, travel bag fits everything, with room to spare for another light stand or two.
Flexible...Extra Light stands, for times you don't need a back drop, you can use it as two independant light stands.
This stand is not a permanent installation or a chinup bar. You have to work with it sensibly.
It is leaps and bounds better than the PVC backdrop system i built two years ago.

I use this portable background stand to go on location and take portrait photos of government officials and business executives and this setup makes it possible. With this background stand I can turn any office or boardroom into a professional studio in just a few minutes. You can use paper rolls, muslin and collapsible (pop-up) backgrounds, you name it just clamp it on and you're in business.
Here's a Production tip: I attach a small lighthead on an adjustible boom-arm to each background stand down low just above where the legs spread out. This adds an adjustible fill light to your background and keeps your lightheads off the floor. Works like a charm.

Comments about Manfrotto Background Support System:
The quality is great. Expensive for what it does. Comes with very nice bag and even clamps. Cheaper sets might do the job, especially since it's not likely (for me at least) to be moving a big background around.

Comments about Manfrotto Background Support System:
I love my Manfrotto tripod so while researching various background support systems I checked on Manfrotto's systems. I read the previous reviews and they are pretty accurate. The stands are difficult to use right out of the box, and it can't hold too much weight. I have one black muslin that I put on it and use 4 A clamps to hold a white back drape behind and it holds up pretty good. I am going to purchase a couple sand bags as I have had a couple issues with people not being careful and the background has started to fall over. I wish it was built more like my heavy duty tripod but for transporting purposes it is fairly easy. The bar should close down to the same size as the legs to get into a smaller bag but it is nice that it even comes with a bag. I also wish it was a little taller and a little wider. I have used this background to shoot a couple motorcycles and various people. I am over 6 feet tall and it is still a little to short for me, I have to do a lot of down low shooting to avoid the top bar. It also isn't wide enough for motorcycles without having to do a bunch of editing afterwards. However if you are just shooting people or objects it works perfect!

This product is better than most of the background support systems I have used but I wouldn't expect anything less from Manfrotto. It comes with a nice durable bag for transportation and storage. I would recommend it to anyone.

I like this support systems a lot. It is typical Manfrotto quality and is a very innovative design. Stands lock together and allow for future expansion. I was originally going to split the cost of this with my friend but I like them so much I decided to keep them all for myself.

Comments about Manfrotto Background Support System:
I needy a sturdy support - the first time around I spent about $75 for something not so sturdy....The reviews for this system really helped me out. I actually needed this first for a bridal show booth - used it to support a 9x12 dropit Modern heavy backdrop and then was able to also hang one 30x40 gallery wrap along with two 20x30 gallery wraps flanking that. It was REALLY sturdy. I definitely recommend this and can say that the extra money you pay will surely get you great quality!

Comments about Manfrotto Background Support System:
After using someone else's background support system to see if this is a type of photography I would like to get into, I decided to go with this Manfrotto kit. Setting it up was easy and the system is fairly stable (indoors on tight weave carpet) - wobbles slightly because it isn't a rigid frame, but I think all similar systems will. The equipment seems like it will be durable - time will tell. For those wondering how it could be better:
(1) these light stands are not air-cushioned or heavy-duty but you could purchase stands with this feature separately in the future to move up,
(2) the cross bar tightens to the top of the light stands so to switch backgrounds, you would probably lower everything, switch backgrounds then raise it back up. Manfrotto has U-hook background holders that make switching easier.

Comments about Manfrotto Background Support System:
Works well with my Westcott mulin background as well as 10' wide paper backgrounds. Only thing I would want changed is the stands...they are samller than my Manfrotto light stands which I would think would be the other way around. It is sturdy enough, but I dont have 100% confidence that it will withstand a toddler running into it with my paper rolls assembled on it.
Easy to set up and tear down.

Comments about Manfrotto Background Support System:
I have a small area that I use to photograph pets and this system is great because the horizontal bar is short enough for my use and can be adjusted to longer length. I use the 54" inch paper rolls and this works perfect. The support system is well made and very easy to set up in any location. It also comes with a very nice bag to keep it all together. I am very happy with this support system. I would definitely recommend this.

Comments about Manfrotto Background Support System:
The background support system does just what it says it does: provides a sturdy support for my background, which is a hand-painted canvas drop-clothe. I needed something that would support a rather heavy background and this system does it without sagging. When I'm not using it as a support for my background, I use the stands as extra light supports for my speedlights and umbrellas. The stands work perfectly and securely.
