I am a semi-professional photographer with more than thirty years of experience and produce fine art prints for clients, books and exhibition. Having worked with traditional darkroom printing methods and, for the past six years, inkjet printing on the Epson Stylus Photo 2200, I have found the Epson Stylus Pro 3880 to be a major advance in fine art printing beyond anything I have experienced to date. It is for me a fine art photographer's printing "dream machine." The colors are crisp, clean and brilliant. Black and white output is nothing less than stunning. It interfaces easily with my Mac and prints come out much faster than I expected. Set up was very easy out of the box but, heeding the warnings about all of the packing tape, I took care to remove all of it. There is a great deal of tape in places least expected in order to secure the machine for shipment and it takes time to remove it. Be very careful to remove all of it before activating the printer or damage could result.
The only difficulty I ran into when setting up the printer was the instructions indicated that once the print cartridges were installed and the printer was powered up, it would begin to automatically prime the print lines. The instructions indicated this would take from 7 to 10 minutes. Although I followed the instructions exactly, my printer did not prime the ink lines. It wasn't until I actually started printing test pages that the ink started to flow and it primed the lines. This was a minor inconvenience that was easily overcome but could be more problematic for someone new to inkjet printers.
To date I have produced over 100 prints since I got the printer a month ago and they are without a doubt the most beautiful prints I have ever created. The output from this printer is far beyond anything I have ever gotten from a commercial photo lab and they surely beat the quality of prints I made in a darkroom.
I am also pleased with the relatively small footprint this printer occupies in my digital lab. I am somewhat limited in available space and to set up a machine capable of printing as large as this one does into such a small space is a feat of technological engineering.
If you are serious about obtaining the finest print quality possible in an inkjet printer whether for exhibition, sales or for personal pleasure, then this is the printer to get. You will not be dissappointed.

I just had my 3880 Delivered Friday, Sunday and I printed my first photo taken with an old 8 mp Canon S5 IS and all I can say is WOW! I can't wait to see what my new Canon 60D will produce.
Unpacking and installation was a breeze, although heavy and large with a lot of tape in and on it. I downloaded the new drivers for my Mac (Lion) and I was off and running.
Reccomendation: Order a dust cover, nothing ruins a printer faster than dust. I just revived another printer I ran off of my Mac that had huge dust buildup and I definitely wouldn't want that to happen to my 3880.

I have been waiting for the Epson 4900 for years. When it finally came out, my needs had changed. I no longer can justify the cost of ink when I'm only printing 200 prints over 17 inches per year. SO I went for the 3880. It is giving me gorgeous prints and although it takes longer to print, it's worth the wait. Easy to set up, paper profiles good and got going right out of the box. As usual, the maintenance tank filled halfway just charging the printer, so order a maintenance tank with this printer, you'll need it pretty soon.

I have been printing 13 x 19 pictures for several years. I recently moved up to the 3880 in order to print 16 x 20's and have found the quality of this printer to be more than imagined. Speed and color quality are amazing. Best pictures I have printed in the past 20 years.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Large-Format Inkjet Printer:
I have never used a printer of this quality and price range so I was a little hesitant about the purchase. I have always wanted a larger format printer. After I set it up on my apple computer and started doing some printing I was blown away at the ease of use and the quality of the results. I took some macro pictures(D3s&105mm mirco) of a 100 year old B/W photos(3"x4") and printed them at 17"x22"(matt paper) - the result was stunning! This picture was a X-mas gift for my father in law, he started tearing up when saw his father standing next to his 1917 Chevy Model 490 in life like size. I also did some larger prints taken from jet cockpits years ago with much lower quality digital files. Again the results were impressive! I have never been inclinded to wite reviews but I am so happy with this purchase. As an amateur photographer this has opened up another area to share and use my love of photography.

Amateur photographer. The output of this printer is terrific if you use a proper workflow with color calibrated monitor and icc profiles for the right paper and ink combination. Vivid, true-to-life colors; details you never knew existed (flaws too) in your photographs show up. Do use ABW profiles for BW work. They work great on Baryta papers. So far I have used Ilford Gold Fiber Silk, Epson Exhibition Fiber, Hahnemuhle Fine Art Baryta and Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl (for 5x7 prints). All recommended.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Large-Format Inkjet Printer:
I'm a semi-professional photographer specializing in wildlife. For the last 6 years I've been using (or attempting to use) an Epson Pro 4000. The print quality from the 4000 was excellent, but I spent hours, and lots of expensive ink, attempting to unclog its printhead. That's why I bought the 3800. It's two generations ahead of the 4000, and the advances in technology show. The image quality is improved, and I've used the 3880 for two weeks on a daily basis with perfect nozzle checks, and NO print head clogs. I have not had to clean the print head once. My 27" NEC display is calibrated, and the prints from the 3880 are spot-on using the Epson profiles. And the best part is that I'm using considerably less ink than I did with the 4000.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Large-Format Inkjet Printer:
Printer was ready to go right out of the box. No setup issues at all. I use a mac pro with snow leopard and found no conflicts. Ink was very easy to access and simple to load. Picked a file, sent to printer and had a photo that looked EXACTLY like my screen first try. Moving from an R2400 which has always done an excellent job, but the savings in ink alone make this a very smart investment. Add to that the ability to print 17" wide and have to pull the trigger on this. I know that the new models have extra ink and color, but at this price you really can't go wrong. It is also considerably lighter weight than it's replacement.
I am an advanced amateur and do some events/weddings etc and will use this printer weekly. The paper size will allow for more creative print sizes and this will please me and my clients.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Large-Format Inkjet Printer:
This is my first 17" printer and it is working very well with my Power Mac (OS 10.72). The prints look very good and I'm letting the printer manage color instead of Photoshop. This seems to work well. Colors are very similar to my calibrated display. My only problem has been getting 17x22" to print perfect aligned when set to borderless. There is a 50/50 chance the paper will get slightly skewed.
The printer itself is nicely made and fairly lightweight. Many other 17" printers weigh 50 to 100 pounds. I could easily lift this printer out of the box, place it on a chest and get things set-up. The Canon IPF-5x00 is HUGE. Delivery and set-up was a big concern since I needed to get the printer carried to the 2nd story.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Large-Format Inkjet Printer:
After owning an Epson R1800 for three years I finally upgraded to the 3880 mostly for the ability to make larger prints. Unlike the R1800, the 3880 will not print roll paper or directly on CD's and does not use a gloss optimizer. While roll paper and CD printing are not an issue for me, I do miss the gloss optimizer. Still for the increase in printing quality and ability to make larger prints I'm more than willing to give up the gloss optimizer. The difference in printing quality of the two printers is most obvious in less saturated images where the smoothness of the color transitions is more apparent. Using the Epson printer profile for their luster paper I made my first print and was very happy with the results. I then made a custom printer profile using an X-rite Pulse and produced an even better print of the same image. If you want to get the best out of a printer, custom profiling is the way to go.

I am a photography student who is about to graduate and will no longer have access to my amazing on-campus facilities. The 3880 is a relatively inexpensive and compact way to keep me printing at the quality level I have come to expect post-graduation.
